2008 has almost drawn to a close and its time for the world as a collective whole to draw breath gather its thoughts and throw out those lists of changes in the year that made people sit up and take notice.

While the first half of the year could have been called a Mac(intosh) attack (first there was the Macbook Air, then the 3G iPhone) and the second half of the year was the approaching ecopocalypse there was still other news and gadgets out there that caught people’s attention.

Here’s what we thought were the memorable gadgets to come out of Asia for 2008…

Asus Eee Netbooks

It could be their size, their price or the fact that, for a while, the makers of Eee laptop line put the Linux operating system on their laptops above windows and OSX but you didn’t have far to come accross a release about this Taiwanese company this year.

The latest entry onto the market were two models which made everything thinner and added a 3G modem in the November release of the Eee PC S101, Eee PC 1002H captured almost as much attention as the start of the year.

HTC G1

Much of the buzz around the HTC G1 surrounded the Google Android operating software (which was actually being worked on by a US company called Android before Google bought the company in 2005 and worked them into the team) announced in November 2007.

However, Taiwanese company HTC, (better known beforehand for touch phones like the HTC touch and computers like the HTC Shift) was the first off the line when it came to making the hardware to go along with the software.

Many of the reviews of the HTC G1 have been mixed so far but signs are improving.

Chinavasion Projector Phone

2008 was very much the year for phones and the Chinavasion projector phone was another that grabbed the attention from a lot of people. This could have come from two places…

Pico projectors were just as much hot property as cell phones with companies vying to be the first to release a commercial pico projector and gadget blogs trying to guess when that would happen.

3M looked like it was going to be first in line to get the mass produced projector onto the market when Chinavasion did more than beat them to the post. It did a little web 2.0 mash up to create a cell phone/projector.

Mind you, given the current Chinavasion track record, perhaps it is not such a surprise.

Softbank 823SH Tiffany

Japan, famous for their love of cell phones, gadgets and anything strange.

So it should come as no surprise when a Japanese phone provider, Softbank Mobile went “ecopocalypse what ecopocalypse?” and put out a smart phone with a case made completely of silver and diamonds from New York jewelers ‘Tiffanies”

The Softbank 823SH Tiffany has 537 diamonds, weighing 18.34 carats, encrusted in the case and cost around the 13 million yen mark (that’s 130,265 dollars to US dwellers). If you want one better get your skates on because according tothe company only 10 will be made initially.

Pyocotan’s Noriko San Goggles

While we’re on the topic of ‘aint Japan strange’ this piece of technology hit the interwebs around October. The length of time people spend commuting in Japan isn’t exactly anything new, neither is the fact that people go to sleep on commutes and miss their stop.

Japanese hacker, Pyocotan, came up with a new spin on the old-fashioned sign around the neck and the smell of cheap booze, Noriko-san googles which showed off the destination you were heading to… would people wake you up though?

Cassette MP3 Player

While launched by the company Chinavasion in late 2007 the Cassette MP3 player didn’t really capture the blogger’s attention until the start of the next year. Once people grabbed the idea they held onto it and for at least 12 months it was on somebody’s lips somewhere.

Perhaps the success of this MP3 player was that it was cheap, cute and let people use equipment that might have been destined to be sold out of the boots of cars at flea markets and underneath motorway overamps.

Styson i Knock

Another cheap and cheerful gadget from the greater China area (OK Taiwan) is the i-Knock. This gadget would be handy for the ‘social networking set’ hooked to their Facebook pages and instant messaging services it knocks itself out (and plays a tune if you program it nicely) every time you get an instant message. The perfect place for any unused photos of the ex-girlfriend/ex-boyfriend

Hopefully the end of 2008 will herald the end of the i- movement. This vowel movement makes me want to punch babies.

Samsung Touch Sight

While still in concept stage this would definitely have to be one of the coolest things to come out this year. The Touch Sight is a camera for the blind that takes a picture using braile and sound which owners can store and share with friends.

Chinavasion Super Cool Mobile Phone Wrist Watch

The cell phone watch idea has been for a long time, ever since a 1946 Dick Tracy strip at the very least, but it really didn’t hit the market until half-way through this year.

This cool cell phone watch was the start of a torrent of wrist phones and the wonderful realisation of the childhood dreams of many middle-aged men.

Tokyo Flash Watch

There hasn’t been too many months go by that one of these watches didn’t turn up in the gadget blogs.

They require special knowledge to work out, they use digital time if they don’t and they’re silver… it’s a wonder they weren’t first thought up in the 80′s

See the blog in all its glory at http://gadgetfreaks.wordpress.com or see what wholesale electronic gadgets are available online from China at companies like Chinavasion.

This cell phone measures 99 x 53 x 21 mm in dimensions and 128 g in weight. It has a 2.8 inch TFT display which supports 16 M colors and it has a resolution 240 x 320 pixels. It has unlimited entries for the contacts in your phonebook. It comes with integrated Bluetooth, MP3/WMA/AAC+/eAAC+/AAC players, support for Nokia maps, TV out, an organizer, a document viewer for Word, PDF, PowerPoint and Excel and a lot of other cool features. The camera has a 5 MP resolution and it can take photos at a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels. It has a Carl Zeiss lens and a LED flash and it is also able to record videos at a speed of 30 FPS. It runs a Symbian operating system and it supports SMS, MMS, e-mails and instant messaging. It also has a stereo FM radio and the games are downloadable. The standard battery can resist to 6 hours of talk time and up to 280 hours in standby mode.
Another super cool cell phone models which is available for the price of $380 is the HTC Touch Diamond. This cell phone comes at the 102 mm x 51 mm x 11.35 mm dimensions and 110 g in weight. The HTC Diamond features a 2.8 inch display which is touch sensitive. It has a resolution of 480 x 640 pixels. Just like the Nokia model above, this cell phone also supports unlimited entries and fields when it comes to the contact in your phonebook. The internal memory of this mobile phone is 4 GB and it also comes with 512 MB of RAM. Some people may be disappointed by the fact that there is no card slot so memory upgrading is not possible. However, we believe that 4 GB of memory is more than enough for all the files, music, pictures and videos that you may want to store on this phone.

The camera has 3 MP and you also have the possibility to record videos with it. it has integrated wireless, so whenever you are near a hot spot, you can use it to connect to the internet via a wireless connection. Other features of this cell phone are the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system, the capacity to send SMS and MMS but also e-mails and instant messages and even FM radio. The games that you want to play are available for download. Too bad that the cell phone only comes in black and white. You get an integrated Bluetooth and an MP3 player. The cell phone’s battery will manage to keep it on for about 5 hours of talk time and up to 285 hours in standby mode.

Barcelona's Mobile World Congress came and went, and didn't amount to much in the way of US cellphones. The rest of the world got some seriously nice gear, though. Here's the best of the best of the out of reach.

HTC Legend

Why You Want It: It's like an HTC Hero, except with Android 2.1, an OLED screen, and a brushed-to-perfection aluminum body, which may be the most stylistically interesting design choice HTC has ever made.
Why You Can't Have It: European availability starts in April, and this phone could see a later US release date like the Hero did, though HTC hasn't given any indication that this is true. Here's the thing: Remember how Sprint uglified the original Hero? I wouldn't put it past them, and more generally HTC, to tone this thing down (read: ruin it) in the unlikely event of a US release.

Alcatel OT980

Why You Want It: It'll be a cheap Android handset in a totally under-recognized form factor. Some may see it as a knockoff of the Pre, but I just see it as a nice little messaging phone, without the restrictions of a dumbphone OS.
Why You Can't Have It: Have you ever seen an Alcatel handset in real life? Didn't think so. This one's coming in May. To Yur-ope.

Motorola XT800

Why You Want It: It's got the brains of a Droid, without the keyboard. Plus, it's got support for dual SIM cards—a rarity in Android phones—and HDMI output.
Why You Can't Have It: It was introduced alongside an explicitly Chinese-only phone, and Motorola has made no indications that a North American release is coming. And even if it did, a dual-SIM international phone without a keyboard might be a tough sell to carriers, which usually market travel phones to businesspeople.

General Mobile Touch Stone

Why You Want It: Remember the HTC Touch HD2? The one with the orgasmically beautiful hardware, and categorically disappointing software? This is pretty much that, with Android.
Why You Can't Have It: General Mobile made their name selling knockoff phones. While the Touch Stone isn't a knockoff phone at all, it comes from a company that doesn't—and will probably never—have a foothold in the US.

Acer beTouch E110

Why You Want It: When Android phones are available for free on contract, this is what they're going to look like. The specs on this thing are underwhelming, so it might not be accurate to say that you'd want it for you, but you might want it for your tweenage kid.
Why You Can't Have It: Acer currently has no plans to bring the beTouch stateside, and Acer's other phones don't exactly have a history of showing up in the US unannounced.

The Puma Phone

Why You Want It: The first phone designed entirely around a sporting lifestyle. Oh, and it's got a solar panel!
Why You Can't Have It: Initial launch plans have it released in Europe in about two months, with further availability TBD. US prospects aren't great though, since Puma doesn't have nearly the brand power here it does in the UK and elsewhere. (Fun fact: British people pronounce Puma like "Pyoo-mah.")

LG GW990

Why You Want It: It's the first phone with Intel's Moorestown chip, and the first with the hybrid Maemo/Moblin OS, called Meego. And seriously, come on with these specs: A 4.8-inch screen at 480 x 1024 pixels? A 1850mAh battery? Intel's Atom-based system-on-a-chip? This phone is pornographic.
Why You Can't Have It: Let's face it: It's a tech demo. The Korean market tends to be more receptive to over-the-top phone like this, which is why they're the only ones getting it for now, and even there, not for another half a year. Can you imagine a Verizon or an AT&T picking up something this absurd? And can you imagine how much it would cost unsubsidized?

Samsung Wave

Why You Want It: Its Bada OS may be underwhelming, but it's a nicely spec'd phone with a couple game-changing features: the first "Super OLED" screen, which doesn't look like ass in direct sunlight. It's also the first handset with USB 3.0, which is, you know, fast.
Why You Can't Have It: UK availability starts in April, and Samsung hasn't even bothered to include a "further markets will be announced by x" blanket statement. It could happen, but don't bet on it.

Toshiba K01

Why You Want It: It's essentially the TG01 with a slide-out keyboard, which makes it the thinnest slide-out-QWERTY smartphone of its kind. (Its kind being massive, massive phones.) It's a proud, final signoff for the entire category of ultraspec'd Windows Mobile 6.x phones.
Why You Can't Have It: The TG01 never made it stateside, and there's no reason to believe that its keyboarded followup will either. And besides, this phone is a lustable piece of hardware, but with WinPho 7 on the horizon, it's hard to recommend buying a 6.5.3-based phone.

Sony X10 Mini

Why You Want It: The Xperia X10 done had itself a baby! An adorable little baby! You get the full Sony Ericsson Timeline interface overlaid atop Android, in a much more compact package. And it'll probably be cheap.
Why You Can't Have It: The X10 is taking forever to make it to market here, and other miniaturized phones, like the N97 Mini, don't seem to fly with American carriers. Accordingly, Sony Ericsson hasn't said a thing about a US release.

Why You Want It: Ignore everything else: This phone has a built-in projector. Ha!
Why You Can't Have It: Samsung's science fair project is going to be very, very expensive, and besides, it won't even be available in Asia and parts of Europe until Q3 of this year, with a wider release possibly in the cards. Possibly.

Texas Instruments Blaze

Why You Want It: Look! Look at this thing! Two 3.7-inch screens, the OMAP 4 chipset based on the ARM Cortex A9, three cameras, a keyboard—this thing is outright insane.
Why You Can't Have It: It's developer hardware, so it's not even meant for wide sale. I suppose you could buy one if you wanted, but unless you engineer cellphones or write mobile OSes for a living, you really shouldn't.

Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress came and went, and didn’t amount to much in the way of US cellphones. The rest of the world got some seriously nice gear, though. Here’s the best of the best of the out of reach.

HTC Legend

Why You Want It: It’s like an HTC Hero, except with Android 2.1, an OLED screen, and a brushed-to-perfection aluminum body, which may be the most stylistically interesting design choice HTC has ever made.
Why You Can’t Have It: European availability starts in April, and this phone could see a later US release date like the Hero did, though HTC hasn’t given any indication that this is true. Here’s the thing: Remember how Sprint uglified the original Hero? I wouldn’t put it past them, and more generally HTC, to tone this thing down (read: ruin it) in the unlikely event of a US release.

Alcatel OT980

Why You Want It: It’ll be a cheap Android handset in a totally under-recognized form factor. Some may see it as a knockoff of the Pre, but I just see it as a nice little messaging phone, without the restrictions of a dumbphone OS.
Why You Can’t Have It: Have you ever seen an Alcatel handset in real life? Didn’t think so. This one’s coming in May. To Yur-ope.

Motorola XT800

Why You Want It: It’s got the brains of a Droid, without the keyboard. Plus, it’s got support for dual SIM cards—a rarity in Android phones—and HDMI output.
Why You Can’t Have It: It was introduced alongside an explicitly Chinese-only phone, and Motorola has made no indications that a North American release is coming.

Why You Can’t Have It: General Mobile made their name selling knockoff phones. While the Touch Stone isn’t a knockoff phone at all, it comes from a company that doesn’t—and will probably never—have a foothold in the US.

Acer beTouch E110

Why You Want It: When Android phones are available for free on contract, this is what they’re going to look like. The specs on this thing are underwhelming, so it might not be accurate to say that you’d want it for you, but you might want it for your tweenage kid.
Why You Can’t Have It: Acer currently has no plans to bring the beTouch stateside, and Acer’s other phones don’t exactly have a history of showing up in the US unannounced.

The Puma Phone

Why You Want It: The first phone designed entirely around a sporting lifestyle. Oh, and it’s got a solar panel!
Why You Can’t Have It: Initial launch plans have it released in Europe in about two months, with further availability TBD. US prospects aren’t great though, since Puma doesn’t have nearly the brand power here it does in the UK and elsewhere. (Fun fact: British people pronounce Puma like “Pyoo-mah.”)

LG GW990

Why You Want It: It’s the first phone with Intel’s Moorestown chip, and the first with the hybrid Maemo/Moblin OS, called Meego. And seriously, come on with these specs: A 4.8-inch screen at 480 x 1024 pixels? A 1850mAh battery? Intel’s Atom-based system-on-a-chip? This phone is pornographic.
Why You Can’t Have It: Let’s face it: It’s a tech demo. The Korean market tends to be more receptive to over-the-top phone like this, which is why they’re the only ones getting it for now, and even there, not for another half a year. Can you imagine a Verizon or an AT&T picking up something this absurd? And can you imagine how much it would cost unsubsidized?

Samsung Wave

Why You Want It: Its Bada OS may be underwhelming, but it’s a nicely spec’d phone with a couple game-changing features: the first “Super OLED” screen, which doesn’t look like ass in direct sunlight. It’s also the first handset with USB 3.0, which is, you know, fast.
Why You Can’t Have It: UK availability starts in April, and Samsung hasn’t even bothered to include a “further markets will be announced by x” blanket statement. It could happen, but don’t bet on it.

Toshiba K01

Why You Want It: It’s essentially the TG01 with a slide-out keyboard, which makes it the thinnest slide-out-QWERTY smartphone of its kind. (Its kind being massive, massive phones.) It’s a proud, final signoff for the entire category of ultraspec’d Windows Mobile 6.x phones.
Why You Can’t Have It: The TG01 never made it stateside, and there’s no reason to believe that its keyboarded followup will either. And besides, this phone is a lustable piece of hardware, but with WinPho 7 on the horizon, it’s hard to recommend buying a 6.5.3-based phone.

Sony X10 Mini

There are about 71 htc cellphones but in this article I’m going to write about the best rated mobile phones released by HTC. The best rated HTC mobile phones are: HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch, HTC Touch HD, HTC Touch Pro, HTC Touch Cruise, HTC Touch Diamond 2, HTC S730, HTC HD2, HTC Touch Pro 2 and HTC Diamond.
<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->
HTC Touch Diamond is redefining the notion of smartphones. HTC Diamond is one of the most stylish smartphones currently existing, endowed with top functions and a stunning 3D interface. It is based on Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 TouchFlo interface. Its functions can be used with your finger, not with a stylus. TouchFlo has 10 tabs (or windows) that provides access to 10 types of content. Switching from one tab to another can be realized in three ways: by a simple touch gesture (crossing finger across the screen from right to left or vice versa), pressing a finger on the icons at the bottom of the screen or using the controller.

HTC Touch is the first device with intuitive touch screen technology. With a touch screen easy to use and with a friendly interface, the HTC Touch with TouchFlo makes quick dialing, navigation and selection look like a play. Chic, elegant and versatile, HTC Touch device will open a new universe were media, communication and social interaction are present. You can surf the Internet with Internet Explorer, send and receive emails from Hotmail and Yahoo accounts. You can also chat on Messenger and send photos to your virtual space through Windows Live.

HTC Touch HD is a PDA Phone that can impress you simply by reading the specifications. It has a generous display of 3.8 inches and a resolution of 800 x 400 pixels. The camera has 5 mega pixels with a simple design, and it doesn’t have flash or a protective cover.

HTC Touch Pro. The keyboard is the most important element that this phone received in addition to Diamond. If you liked the Diamond as it was, with its good and bad things, but you felt the need for a QWERTY to write emails, text messages, or to surf net and do other activities that involve intensive writing, then you are going to love the Touch Pro. This gadget device has TV out option, higher capacity battery then the HTC Touch Diamond, increased Ram and Rom and memory card expansion- micro SD 2.0 capable of 32 Giga Bites.

HTC Touch Cruise combines personal navigation and communication very easy. No matter in which location you are, this phone will help you browse easily. With all the functionality you need in one powerful phone, HTC Touch Cruise has all you want plus GPS navigation and Tom Tom software. If you move your fingers on the surface of the screen the innovative TouchFLO interface will respond to every move. With this smart phone you can make ease passage between calls, emails, messages, music, pictures and any other applications.

HTC Touch Diamond 2 uses the latest 3D TouchFLO interface, which is a customized version of Windows Mobile 6.1. It has a 3.2 inches display high-resolution VGA. It has a new key- zoom bar- for quick panning of web pages, e-mail, text messages, photos or documents. The battery will last with about 50 % more and it has a 5 MP digital camera, a gravity sensor, a light sensor and not least, GPS receiver.
