Infographic: Holidays are hot for in-app mobile ads

Posted by on Friday, 23 December, 2011

We already knew that mobile advertisements perform better on larger screened devices and now there’s evidence of when the best time of the year is for these ad spots. If you guessed the year-end holiday season, you’d be right according to data from Mobclix, a Velti company.

The mobile advertising company notes huge jumps during the months of November and December, with more engagement in full screen ads. Among the other datapoints, ad impressions found in mobile software with the Samsung Galaxy Tab — not Apple’s iPad — accounted for the most mobile ads in tablet apps. That could be due to more iOS devs using iAds, but still: It’s a rare time the Tab is ahead of Apple’s successful tablet by any measure! This makes sense to a degree: Android app developers tend to rely on in-app ads for revenue vs. iOS developers who successfully generate revenues through app sales.

Eee Pad Transformer Prime gets handled, fawned over

Posted by on Monday, 28 November, 2011

We’ve seen the Eee Pad Transformer Prime work out its camera, take a bite out of Ice Cream Sandwich and slide through a Portuguese hands-on, but we’re more than happy to take a peek at Ritchie’s Room’s “first look” as well. Their impressions? Pretty positive — Ritchie had nary a negative thing to say about the ASUS slate, optimistically noting that folks screaming for ice cream will eventually be able to sooth their throats with an update. The outfit confirmed a handful of details we’d already deduced — the prime’s svelte 8.33mm (0.33 inches) and 586 gram (1.29 pound) measurements leave it just a hair thinner than the iPad 2, and as we suspected, make it incompatible with the original Transformer’s keyboard dock. Hit the source link below for a mess of photos and a glowing write-up.

Green Overdrive [video]: We spend a day driving the i MiEV

Posted by on Wednesday, 2 November, 2011

Yeah, we’ve test driven a lot of electric cars on the Green Overdrive show, but we don’t usually get to spend all that long driving the cars. Most of the time it’s just around the block or a few minutes on the driving track. But for our latest episode, we took Mitsubishi’s all-electric i MiEV out for a full day of driving, running it through its paces on the highway, in the city, parallel parking, looking for a charge, and packing it with people (and stuff). Here are our impressions:

Canon EOS-1D X first hands-on (video)

Posted by on Tuesday, 25 October, 2011

Professional photographers know the drill: every few years, Canon or Nikon announces a game-changing DSLR, often prompting top photogs to unload their complete kits and switch to another system in a never-ending attempt to shoot with the best. This time, Canon is first out of the gate, with its flagship EOS-1D X — the latest in a series that dates back to 2001 with the EOS-1D. As you’ve probably noticed, the company’s new top model looks virtually identical to its decade-old ancestor, but is otherwise a far cry from that four megapixel CCD sensor-sporting dinosaur. We’ve been anxiously awaiting an opportunity to check out Canon’s new ,800 18.1 megapixel full-frame model since first getting word of the beastly camera last week, and just had a chance to go hands-on during the company’s Pro Solutions event in London. Jump past the break for our impressions and a video walkthrough.

Hands-on with Toyota’s Prius plug-in hybrid (video)

Posted by on Saturday, 17 September, 2011

Yesterday we attended Toyota’s Green Drive Expo where we were given the opportunity to take the production version of the Prius plug-in hybrid (PEV) — and its smorgasbord of technology — for a spin. We spent a couple hours driving interfacing with the computers aboard the Advanced model, which besides being outlet-friendly, includes some unique features within the Prius lineup. Explore our gallery below, and hit the break for our impressions and hands-on videos with the latest incarnation of Toyota’s iconic vehicle.
