Is StreamTV a black knight in the 3D TV market?

Posted by on Wednesday, 7 April, 2010

3D TVs are a hot topic these days, with Panasonic, Sony, and Samsung all fighting for a piece of the action. But the battle may have just gotten more interesting with the entrance of a new competitor: StreamTV. We were just informed that this company, which we have never heard of, currently has an Amazon listing for a 42-inch and a 37-inch 3D TV.

The TV has some interesting features, including a built in Blu-ray player, browsing capabilities, and a 500GB hard drive. Most intriguing though, is that it claims to be able to show 3D content without the need for glasses of any sort. The fact that a Google search for StreamTV turns up nothing makes us very suspicious, but for $5999.99 and $3999.99 (42 and 37-inch, respectively), we would expect nothing less. This mysterious company also has a regular 55-inch LCD TV listed on Amazon for $2,299.99.

Better LCD TVs? New CCFL backlights to compete with LEDs

Posted by on Friday, 19 February, 2010

Japan’s Sanken Electric has developed a new type of cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlight for LCD TVs that’s as power-efficient as LED backlights but is supposedly up to 60% cheaper to mass-produce.

Approximately 90% of all LCD TVs currently on the market have CCFL backlights. A 32-inch LCD TV usually requires six CCFL tubes, but Sanken says their new lamps are so efficient that only two of them are enough (one at the top and another one at the bottom of the device).

The company also works on LED solutions for TVs but still expects sufficient demand for CCFL tubes for lower-end TVs in the future. Sanken plans to start volume production in one of their plants in Japan as early as this summer.

It’s not the first Hello Kitty TV out there, but this new Toshiba TV is perhaps the one with the most discreet design. Announced [JP] today, the Hello Kitty 19A800KT is a 19-inch LCD TV that sports the cartoon cat on both the device itself and the remote controller. But that’s not all.

In addition, a Hello Kitty will pop up on the screen every time you mute the TV or change channels (see picture below). Technically, we have an HD TV (1,366×768 resolution) from Toshiba’s REGZA line with 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 2×3W speakers and 2 HDMI ports.

The Hello Kitty TV will go on sale in Japan on February 5 for $700. Needless to say, the device is Japan-only at this point.

Hello Kitty, the dream cartoon cat of millions of teenage girls around the world, regularly gets a lot of love from the gadget world, too. But Hello Kitty TVs were relatively scarce so far. Last time we blogged about one was in June 2008. While that one was pretty cute by itself, this new model announced today [JP], a 13.3-inch LCD TV, is much, much cuter (at least in my view).

The device is made by a Japanese company called Dynaconnective and, if anyone from the target group cares, has the following specs:

  • 1,280×800 resolution
  • 275cd/m2 luminance
  • 500:1 contrast ratio
  • 16ms response time
  • 3Wx2 stereo speakers

The TV can show Kitty’s face as a background picture for enhanced cuteness. This is the remote. It’s shaped like Kitty’s ribbon. Isn’t that adorable?

Sized at 414mm×372mm×149mm, the Hello Kitty TV weighs 2.3kg. Dynaconnective plans to start selling it in Japan on December 24 for $560. The TV isn’t suitable for anyone living outside Japan unfortunately, as it’s optimized for the Japanese TV system, has Japanese only menus etc.
