Video: Hands-on with Inkling 2.0, the iPad textbook

Posted by on Saturday, 27 August, 2011

A screenshot from GigaOM's video demo of Inkling 2.0

This week, digital publishing startup Inkling debuted the 2.0 version of its software, which provides interactive, digital versions of college textbooks for the iPad.

The San Francisco-based startup is just down the street from GigaOM’s office, so I headed on over to Inkling headquarters on Thursday to get an in-person demo from the company’s Founder and CEO Matt MacInnis. In short: It’s so awesome it actually makes me want to buy college textbooks again, just to play with the app some more.

Inkling 2.0 has a bunch of new features, including an interactive social layer that allows users to form online study groups with other readers worldwide, as well as in-app links to outside sources such as Wikipedia and Google. According to recent research, student demand for digital versions of required reading materials is at an all-time high, so Inkling 2.0 could prove to be quite popular at college campuses this coming fall.

Since Inkling’s product is so inherently visual, seeing it in action is the best way to understand what it is — so please check out the video of my interview with MacInnis and his demo here:

Stuff You Should Absorb About Changing Your wipers This Year.

Posted by on Sunday, 30 May, 2010

Are you the beneficiary of some shiny fresh replacement wiper blades but have no clue how to fasten them to your car, well your in luck, and this tutorial is here to guide. First of all lets analyze the most necessary elements too look for when purchasing replacement wiper blades. One of the key issues concerned is the life expectancy of the replacement wiper blades. Most standard rubber wipers have a very reduced number of cycles when compared to silicone wipers; this help is usually prominent on the side of the packet.

You can contrast the two by determining how much they cost per one hundred thousand cycles. As soon as you so this you will realise what great value silicone wipers are in the long run. Your basic rubber wipers are only suitable for around done hundred thousand strokes, your common silicone wiper blade is good for millions of strokes, and only charge a bit more. So now you apprehend your choices and have hopefully invested in a new pair of replacement wiper blades lets take a look at the actual process of replacing your wipers. The first thing you will need to savvy is when you exactly you need to replace them. The best time of year for this is just before the rainy season, but after the polar temperatures of the summer when wipe blades are prone to damage. Autumn is usually an great time for these determinants, so replace your wipers at least once a year but take the time to investigate them at least once every six month in order to determine precisely how much abuse they are taking. If the wipers are clearly worn they will make a very annoying and critical squeaking sound when in use, this is due to the fact the rubber is worn and no longer is aligning with the wind screen. Another manifestation of damage is the wiper blade vibrating fast at high speed, this is an inkling the rubber wiper blade is coming away from the metal sweeping arm, either way its time they were replaced.

In some cases cleaning the windscreen with some and water to remove any dust and grease may help ameliorate the bother, but remember not to use any wax products as this will reduce the ability foyer wipers tremendously. This should leave us in a actual position to actually tackle replacing the wiper blade now, in order to do this you may need a screw driver, but on most modern transports it’s simply necessary to advance the wiper blade and slides it out manually without the need to undo any screws. If the wiper blade is in an annoying position try turning on the ignition and activating the wiper blade until they are in a more convenient place to work on. Next pull the wipers away from the wind screen so they are standing vertically in space. Then using your hand slide the rubber wiper blade away from the frame, in some cases you may need to advance up some small tabs but this is not always the case.

HOLY CATS! IT’S A SHELF FOR STUFF BEHIND YOUR APPLE COMPUTER!

Sweet jumping Jehosaphat on a carbon rod! LOOK AT THIS! It’s a shelf! That holds stuff! Behind your Apple monitor! It costs $29.95 and it is so amazing I had to look at this image twice just to remind myself of the feeling of fear and awe I felt when I saw this the first time. This thing “uses two adjustable clips and gravity to literally perch on the desk stand of iMacs and Cinema Displays.” LITERALLY PERCH! Unless my brain deceives me – and it has – this concept is so new it’s not even patented yet.

In fact, it’s future technology so complex and amazing that even the Maya had no inkling of this coming mindfreak and those bastards had a calendar that runs out in 2012. This is technology from the next decade, people, and you have it today. Go ahead and laugh because once this $30 table for crap behind your monitor goes viral there’s no stopping it.

Web Hosting Information - Web Hosting

Posted by on Friday, 5 June, 2009

Anyone who has even minimal access to a computer has an inkling of the broad reach and vast scope of the internet in today’s world. On a daily basis, new people are attracted to the internet with the hopes of having a website and making their fortune online. One basic essential to any internet business is a web hosting plan, and many people who are just launching their business are trying to find the best, low cost web hosting that they can find.

In this era, which is known as the “internet age,” most people in the Western world are very much aware of the power and reach of the internet. It is safe to say that every single day there are new entrepreneurs who decide they are ready to launch a website and grab their piece of the internet pie. In order to get a website on the net, one must have web server hosting and in most instances, people who are new to an online business are interested in finding good, low cost web hosting services.

In order for a website to be displayed it must be “hosted” on a special type of computer called a server, which is connected and accessible to the world wide web on a constant basis. Having a web server hosting account allows the person to post their web pages on their host server, which makes them available to the internet community. There are many different types of hosting accounts available, from free webhosting to managed dedicated servers, but the most popular type that people who are starting a web business look for is low priced, web hosting.

While it may seem that free webhosting is a better option for a brand new internet business than even low cost web hosting, there are a number of drawbacks to those free services. One problem is that often the free hosting company will put their own advertising on your website pages, which can distract your website visitors.

Some newbie entrepreneurs might believe that they should use a free webhosting service until their new enterprise starts to make some money. So they opt for low cost web hosting. But, there are some problems with almost all of the freebie hosting services and one of the main problems is that they will place their own advertising on all the pages hosted with their service.

When it comes to your hosting plan, you can expect to get what you pay for. If your website needs are minimal, then you will probably be satisfied with a cheaper, web hosting plan, as long as you check out the reliability of the company first. As the needs of your website grows and the server load and traffic demand becomes higher, you may need to seek out better web hosting plans, to ensure that your website is always up, is fully functional and is loading quickly for your visitors.

If you are in a situation where you need to find low cost web hosting because your business is new and you need to keep costs down, then make sure you check the track record of the hosting company before you start to build your website. Also, working with a web server hosting company that offers low-cost plans, mid-range plans, and plans that provide dedicated hosting services is a good indication that they are a provider that will be able to grow with your business.

If you need to keep your overhead and expenses minimal while getting your new enterprise off the ground, then low cost web hosting will probably be sufficient for your needs, as long as you are sure to choose a web host that is reliable and has a good track record. If you want a hosting provider that will be able to handle your site as it grows, then choose a provider that offers a variety of hosting plans, from low-cost to managed dedicated hosting.

Google turns to eBook sales but no device in sight

Google is set to free eBooks from proprietary handhelds by selling digital works readable on any device that can access the web. The move is in direct competition Amazon and their Kindle who’ve upset publishers by selling digital first editions at less than half the price of hardback hard copy versions. Instead, Google will charge the same as in print while reserving the right to alter prices where deemed “exorbitant”. Google already sells eBooks through the Sony Store for the Reader but this will take their literature retail in-house and bring novels to mobile phones and laptops everywhere. Personally, I rather like the idea of having a dedicated eBook reading device and I’m not sure I’m going to get a good experience on my mobile. I also don’t feel too good about paying the same for a digital book as I do for a hardback, especially when Amazon is knocking them out so cheap. On the plus side, it does indicate there’s a lot tablets out their about to hit the market. I’m sure Google would have an inkling of such things and that the likes of Qulacomm and whoever else will be most pleased by the news. Fingers crossed there’ll be no international issues, or am I just dreaming here? (via NYT)
