How to clog your arteries the fun and flavorful way!

Posted by on Thursday, 15 April, 2010

Instructables has, um, instructions for preparing a “Blooming Onion” of the sort you find at fine restaurant chains throughout the United States. I don’t know if this wonderful delicacy has crossed the pond yet, so maybe this will be a treat for our European readers.

Instructables: Blooming Onion.

Hey, it’s Thursday, and I’m hungry. You think I should be writing about something else? Tell us!

Party people, wave your wristbands in the air

Posted by on Thursday, 18 March, 2010

This cool Instructable teaches you how to build your own persistance of vision wristband, one of those things that spell a word when you swing it in front of someone fast enough. The device uses a Lilypad Arduino board and about eight 8 LEDs.

You actually have to program the board to get things to show up, which requires a bit of patience. However, it’s quite a cute illusion and, with enough patience, you can make your wristband say anything, if you catch my meaning.

Mod: Audio line out from SNES Super Gameboy

Posted by on Wednesday, 17 March, 2010

Chiptune is fun to mess around with, but programming on a tiny Gameboy screen can get a little annoying. Nintendo created the Super Gameboy to allow players to plug Gameboy cartridges into their SNES, so it would stand to reason that you could run LSDJ or Nanoloop through your TV. But how to get the audio out and recordable? Kyle Robinson has a nifty little Instructable on how to add an 1/8″ audio jack to the cartridge. Only basic soldering ability required.

DIY: Convert a 1984 Mac into a Snow Leopard machine

Posted by on Monday, 8 March, 2010

Apparently with a bit of geek know-how, a 1984 Macintosh can run OS X Snow Leopard. Who knew? Best of all this is something that nearly anyone with some determination and Google skills can do. The hardest part is probably locating a 1984 Macintosh.

Now I must point out that this instructable doesn’t tell you how to get Snow Leopard to run the original hardware. That would just be wacky. Oh no, it guides you through how to carefully deconstruction an original Mac and install brand new hardware including a USB screen and USB port. But it doesn’t seem that hard. Give it a go and let us know how it turns out.

Construct your own Head Mounted Display for fun and profit

Posted by on Saturday, 13 February, 2010

While you jerks are wasting away watching the Olympics this weekend, I’m going to attempt to make this sweet-ass Head Mounted Display. The Instructable doesn’t seem that hard. Basically I’ll just be transplanting the screens from my busted Myvu personal media glasses into some utility or ski glasses. Maybe I’ll make one for me and one for the wife, solving my Valentine’s Day shopping conundrum.

Now don’t hate on the kid that came up with this idea. Yes, it’s simply reusing parts from a production HMD to make a somewhat inferior product. But that doesn’t matter. This project could lay the foundation for some spectacular mods. Rear-mounted cams, night vision, and even augmented reality applications could all be fitted into the design. Major props, dude. Well done.

DIY: A wood induction charger based off of a Powermat

Posted by on Wednesday, 18 November, 2009

The Powermats are pretty cool. They charge without eff’n wires. But they are all plastic and might not look right in some deco. So why not stuff the guts into something a little more pleasing like a block of wood. It seem to work fine and this Instructable will guide you through how to make one. I’m thinking that you’ll probably void your warranty though.
