While Toshiba’s stateside reps had us convinced its 14-inch Ultrabook wouldn’t see the light of day until sometime in June, that message of withholding apparently didn’t make it Down Under. Outed by its Australian arm today, that would-be Portege is actually the company’s Satellite U840. We already knew the electronics giant had intended on shuffling this Windows 7 machine out under that brand umbrella back at CES, but now we have a ,500 AUD (about ,608 USD) price tag to go with a list of confirmed specs. Officially on deck for this aluminum-bodied laptop are an Intel Core i5-2467M processor and HD Graphics 3000 GPU, 720p-capable 1366 x 768 LED display, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, 320GB of storage, in addition to ports for HDMI, mic, headphone and USB (1x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0). We still don’t know much about the capacity of the six cell battery powering this svelte notebook entry or a concrete landing date for that matter. But from the looks of this Aussie product page, that release is creeping mighty close.

Could the low-power-chip design that’s used in your iPhone someday show up inside the chips built by Intel-rival Advanced Micro Devices? Definitely maybe. Or as AMD’s brand new Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster put it to us: “The answer is not no.” Papermaster’s apparent openness to ARM makes sense. AMD has been competing with Intel since back in the 1970s, and it’s a natural ally to ARM — the British company whose chips designs typically wind up in coffee makers and mobile phones — as it finds itself increasingly fighting with Intel.

Ahead of any possible Ultrabook announcements, Sony’s looking to give its existing VAIO catalogue a (relatively underwhelming) shot in the arm with a bundle of hardware retweaks. The Z series looks to gain the most out of the Spring refresh, with a new <strike>off-white </strike>Carbon Fiber Silver color option set to be offered up alongside an optional LTE modem. The series also gets a processor step-up, with new Intel Core i5 and i7 options up to 3.5GHz, rounded off with the choice of SSD storage. Including the connectable drive, prices for the series refresh will start from ,950. Meanwhile, both the S (13-inch, 0, 15-inch, 0)and E series will get a similar bump to Core i7 processors, with both the S and aforementioned Z series able to lock into an extended sheet battery accessory. If minor processor improvements, more battery options and LTE connectivity enough to fork over your cash, you can expect the revitalized units to arrive early next month.

Kids have been honing their computer smarts on Intel-based Classmate PCs for a few years now, and Lenovo’s just sewn its name inside the collar of its second generation of student-friendly lappies. Based on the chip maker’s “Learning Series,” Lenovo’s new boy comes in clamshell and convertible flavors, and brings an Atom N2600 processor, a max of 2GB DDR3 memory and up to a 320GB — or 32GB solid state — storage along to class. It’ll launch in uniform grey (like the first generation pictured), but orders that meet the minimum requirement can choose to splash a little color on top. As before, these things are designed to handle the daily rigors dished out by a nine-year-old, hence a new rotating hinge on the convertible, strengthened and designed to last “tens of thousands of cycles.” Should be enough to see you into adulthood then. It’s available to institutions as of this month, but if you want to know more, hit the PR after the break.

Are you and all of your friends flocking to buy that thing shown above at full retail price? Exactly. Evigroup’s SmartPaddle Pro tablet is now available from €699 (under 0) for the base 10-inch configuration with no GPS, no 3G and a 32GB solid-state hard drive. Additional configurations are available with 1 or 2GB of RAM, and the high-end configuration, which includes 3G and GPS goes for under ,500. The SmartPaddle Pro, with all the trimmings (including head-tracking), retails for around ,530. Other specs include a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, five hour run time, mini-HDMI port and capacitive touchscreen, none of which seem to justify the (still bloated) new price tag. Click past the break for the full video, which is apparently set to an Enya album.

Choosing is hard. And in the case of ASUS’ forthcoming netbook line, totally not necessary. Just days after Intel snuck out details surrounding the next generation of its Atom line, out flows shots and information about what’ll undoubtedly be one of the first next-gen netbooks to use ‘em. The Eee PC Flare line is expected to supplant the long-standing Seashell range at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, with a smattering of models to be lining ASUS’ booth. Outside of lively, sleeker exteriors, we’re told to expect models with the new N2600 and N2800 Atom CPU line, a 12-incher powered by AMD’s Fusion APU line and the token chiclet-style keyboard that we’ve all grown used to. It’s also possible that we’ll see revised 10-inchers alongside the big boys, with the 1225B, 1225C, 1025C and 1025CE named in particular. Naturally, we’ll be bringing you more as we get it. Oh, and “netbooks are back, baby!”

We’ve seen odd and law-swerving vending machines before, but none as meanspirited as Kraft’s collaboration with Intel that only gives pudding samples to adults. The unimaginatively titled iSample denies the youthful its sweet nectar by taking a facial scan and determining dessert deservedness based on biometric data, like how far apart your facial features are. Part experiment, part publicity stunt, Intel is trying out technologies that could recommend products based on age. The company also claims it may retrofit the technology into existing machines to let companies study who’s buying its products; Kraft is clearly in it just to deny children some pudding. To see if you have spent enough time at the fountain of youth, head down to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium or New York’s South Street Seaport, and take your place in the line of parents ordering one for their progeny. Check the promo video after the break to see the machine wiping disappointment all over the kids’ little faces.

As the internet expands — and businesses bring more and more data online — it’s more important the ever that data centers keep their power consumption down. This not only saves money, it eases the burden on the environment. Raising temperatures is one rather easy way to save power, but many data operators are afraid to dial up the savings. They’re afraid of damaging equipment. They’re afraid of voiding warranties. They’re afraid of change. Theses fears appear to be unwarranted, but there’s been little in the way of hard data to dispel them. That’s beginning to change, however, as the large data center operators such as Amazon and Facebook study the problem internally and equipment makers such Intel conduct experiments and educate customers

Is there room on the Ultrabook wagon for two new models from Samsung? There’s a 13-incher and a 14-incher, which both come under its Series 5 branding, but at first glance only the smaller model might deserve its seat: it has the requisite Sandy Bridge processor and an acceptable thickness (14.9mm), but it adds 500GB of HDD storage on top of a 16GB SSD, which brings its weight right up to the 1.4kg limit. Meanwhile, the 14-inch variant only just scrapes through the 21mm thickness criterion, but its 1.8kg weight seems well overboard. We can’t wait to see what happens when Intel inspects its ticket.

Just yesterday, we caught a glimpse of what Intel has in store for Ivy Bridge, and it seems those details were but a prelude to a bevy of details that leaked out today. It seems the folks over at VR Zone got their hands on some of Chipzilla’s internal documents showing a host of changes for its post-Sandy Bridge mobile CPUs. Apparently, we can expect quite a few new full-power models, including a 2.9GHz Core i7-3920XM — clocked at 200MHz faster than the Core i7-2960XM that’s Intel’s presiding mobile chipset champion — along with two other quad-core Core i7s and a couple of Core i5 chips as well. For those who cherish battery life above all else, there’s a dual-core Core i7-3667U clocked at 2.0 GHz and a 1.8GHz Core i5-3427U coming down the pipe. All the speedy new silicon comes with upgraded Intel HD 4000 graphics, and is slated for release in April and May of next year. If you can’t wait until then for your next-gen CPU fix, head on over to the source for a heaping helping of Ivy Bridge charts and specs.
