Ninja Assassin Effects Tech: John Gaeta Interview (Boing Boing Video)

Posted by on Thursday, 27 May, 2010

This episode of Boing Boing Video is brought to you by www.wepc.com Academy Award-winning special effects designer John Gaeta (Matrix, Speed Racer) talks with Boing Boing about the technology and the human talent behind the forthcoming movie Ninja Assassin, directed by James McTeigue. Along the way, we explore a broader realm of questions about the future of games, movies, and interactive entertainment. Will movies become more like games, offering new ways for us to insert ourselves inside the stories? Who will create them, using what tools, and how will the experience be different? Will computer-generated actors replace human actors, or stunt persons — or will the two realms overlap in ways we can’t yet predict? All of this we ask of the guy who invented “bullet time.” Due in theaters this fall, director James McTeigue’s Ninja Assassin follows the story of Raizo (played by Asian mega-popstar Rain), one of the world’s most deadly assassins. As Gaeta explains in this video, the movie merges blindingly badass Bruce-Lee-esque martial arts stunt work with tastefully integrated “virtual” work. BB blog post, with extended interview transcript of a longer conversation we had about the future of interactivity and “hybrid entertainment” — and why Hollywood is, in Gaeta’s words, “like a mule.” www.boingboing.net

Sony officially announces Motion Controller in Fall 2010

Sony wants you to know that the “Motion Controller” will be available worldwide this Fall. It’s also adamant that the name “Motion Controller” is a tentative name for now. We’ve heard murmurs that it’d be called “Gem,” but for now it’s “Motion Controller.” I’d suggest that Sony call it “Purple Bulb Knob,” but the company’s official strategy is “Don’t Listen to Doug.”

Oh, a couple other things. You’ll need to have the PlayStation Eye camera to use the Motion Controller. And Sony “will vigorously promote the Motion Controller as the de facto controller of the PS3 platform along with the DUALSHOCK series controller and will deploy various measures to enhance the software title line-up for the Motion Controller, delivering groundbreaking interactive entertainment only possible on the PS3 platform.”

That’s about it. No pricing or firm launch date beyond Fall. Full press release here.

Mad Catz Cyborg R.A.T. is the ugliest mouse known to man

Posted by on Wednesday, 6 January, 2010

500x_mc1Mad Catz isn’t actually known for being subtle, but this is a bit much even for them. It’s the new Cyborg R.A.T. – and it’s a hot mess of wasteland design gone wrong.

Imagine that the world ended, people live in underground bunkers, but there were some survivors. They’d build stuff out of whatever they could find, combing buttons, switches, and dials into an ungodly mess of function and form. Now imagine someone from this post-apocalyptic future came back and designed a mouse. That’s what the Cyborg R.A.T. makes me think of.

Ultimately though, what matters is if the thing is comfortable. We’ll get one when it comes available and review it for you, and let you know how well it works. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it’s the best. mouse. evar.

Are Nintendo Wii Cheats Really Worth It?

Posted by on Friday, 20 November, 2009

The ever increasing love of the Nintendo Wii has also created aburgeoning demand for Nintendo Wii cheats. Because game consoles such as the Wii have become a major aspect of our lives, the necessity to finish the titles successfully has grown. But as you will no doubt know, ‘beating the game’ can sometimes be very hard, and so there’s no harm in progressing with a cheat here or there.

However, there are a selection of players who use Nintendo Wii cheats to get afast fix to getting stuck on a specific level of the game. But what if these stages were designed so that you do get stuck? The explanation might be that if you use your mind and imagination in making an attempt to crack the issue you may discover a completely new enjoyment to the game.

Fortunately, there are other types of Nintendo Wii cheats that you might want to test out. These cheats let you have a good time without always changing the gameplay. These let you unlock secret features that might be there in certain stages of the game. This is what is known as an ‘Easter Egg’ in gamer’s lingo and can add extra surprise and enjoyment to the game.

Players are absolutely justified if you say you need to play the game with complete liberty, without the demand of having to finish one specific level in order to progress on to the next. But in your rush to reach the end, it might be sensible to be careful not to spoil the interactions with the videogame by using Nintendo Wii cheats.

Nintendo Wii was made to offer interactive entertainment to game players of all ages. Complex titles for which you have got to rack your brains aren’t a part of the ethos as Wii is focused on relaxingand not taxing your mind. So in the act of making an easy game even simpler by using Nintendo Wii Cheats you could be missing out on the subtleties of the game.

In other words, only employ the Nintendo Wii Cheats where absolutely neccessary and play the game to the maximum!
