Revamped Xbox 360 dashboard to launch on December 6th, Microsoft confirms

Posted by on Tuesday, 22 November, 2011
Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that its Xbox 360 dashboard would be getting an upgrade “in the coming days.” Today, the company has clarified that statement, declaring that the revamped interface will launch on December 6th. As we’ve previously noted, the update promises to bring deeper Kinect integration (including sharper voice recognition capabilities), Facebook sharing mechanisms, and a cleaner interface. Redmond also says that the fall cleanup will introduce “a wealth of new content,” including live TV, music and movies, available for streaming. For now, the dashboard is still in beta, though it certainly won’t be long before the masses get their hands on it.

Screen Grabs: Palm Pre-iPhone hybrid appears on Grimm, doesn’t look half bad

Posted by on Monday, 31 October, 2011

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Anyone who caught the series premiere of Grimm, NBC’s new fairy-tale-and-crime-procedural would have seen another sort of unearthly fusion: a Palm Pre device ringing like an iPhone. The phone then switches to the typical webOS interface we’ve long admired, picking up reception on AT&T along the way. We’re torn over whether they’re using a Pre 2 or another Palm family member, though the screen looks too dinky for it to be the mythical Pre 3. But in a world of monster hunters and big bad wolves, we guess anything’s possible.

[Thanks, Ben]

What You Should Know About Portable Auto GPS Features

Posted by on Thursday, 27 October, 2011

Its never that easy to look for the best auto GPS.With your hunt for the best, you should check out first for portability. Portable auto GPS navigators are flexible, easy to transfer and packed with features. As a driver, you should know what you need, and not purchase what the market says is cool. Make sure that with the money you are spending, you get all the necessary features that you need.

The top manufacturers in the market are Mio, Garmin and Tom-tom. Features should always precede the brand that you are purchasing..

Screen size and brightness matters because during that split second when you have to take your eyes off the road and look onto your portable auto GPS screen, you need to get as much info as possible. Too small a screen may require you to squint your eyes or may take longer for you to decipher what you’re looking at. Clarity and brightness are important aside from screen size.

Comprehensive detailed digital maps are what you need if you’re going cross country. Driving across country or outside of the borders is an adventure and most of the time will leave you clueless on where to go about. It’s a tad easier to learn where you need to go. Of course you need great reception so that wherever you are, you will always have signal for your GPS app.

Graphic users interface is very important again because of that need for split second access. Instant access to information is important when driving and have an easily manageable interface will allow you to navigate your screen in split seconds while driving.

Battery life is very important especially for long drives. That’s the only drawback with portable auto GPS. They run on batteries. When looking for the best auto GPS, ask yourself first what you need.  Aside from what’s mentioned above, there are a lot more other features that you need to consider.

Touch Vision Interface employs AR to control screens from afar

Posted by on Sunday, 11 September, 2011

We’re not exactly lacking in ways to interact with a screen from afar, but the folks at Teehan+Lax have now put an augmented reality-enhanced spin on things with their so-called Touch Vision Interface. While the “how” behind it is no doubt complicated (and being kept largely under wraps at the moment), the end result is fairly simple: you just point your smartphone at a screen (or two) and start manipulating it from the point of view provided by the phone’s camera. Of course, it’s all still in the early stages right now, but group sees a wide range of applications for the system — even including large outdoor billboards. Check it out in action in the video after the break.
