GitHub Hosts Sold-Out CodeConf, First of Many

Posted by on Sunday, 10 April, 2011

For programmers in San Francisco, the hottest ticket in town this weekend is to CodeConf. This is the first conference hosted by the folks from GitHub, one of most popular web-based code repositories for the developer community today.

The bad news for programmers who don’t have tickets yet is that CodeConf is sold out. (There’s a waiting list.) The good news, GitHub CEO Chris Wanstrath told me today, is that there are probably many more CodeConfs to come.

“We’ve been talking about having a conference like CodeConf since before we even launched GitHub,” Wanstrath said in an interview today. “We’re trying to bring the Internet community into ‘meatspace.’” In that vein, the company has long hosted biweekly DrinkUp events, an informal, boozy spin on the classic Meetup get-together. CodeConf has been organized to have the same casual vibe.

“For us, it’s more about getting people to meet each other, rather than one person giving a talk to a group about something technical,” he said. “We focus on collaboration, not just code.”

That focus on bringing techies together has been a huge part of GitHub’s success as a company. Since its April 2008 launch, GitHub has attracted a loyal following of users who run the gamut from independent hackers to enterprise software development teams from Fortune 500 firms.

To me, one of the coolest things about GitHub is that all this code and community is hosted by a company that hasn’t taken on a dime of venture capital. According to Wanstrath, GitHub has been banking self-sustaining revenues practically since day one with its payment plans, and it currently has no plans to take on outside cash.

“We’ve taken on zero outside investment, not even from friends and family,” Wanstrath said. “Everyone says you can’t make money in developer tools. But I’ve learned to take everything everyone says with a  grain of salt.”

O2 stings iPhone customers with tethering bolt-on

What an absolute con! One of the few real benefits of the iPhone announcements last night was that Apple handset customers can now use their little touchscreen darlings to tether with their computers for mobile internet access. In network pricing news this morning, however, O2 has completely stiffed users by charging a premium bolt-on for this new feature that’s already built into the phone anyway. 3GB of tethered data will cost you a stunning £14.68 per month while they charge £29.36 for the 10GB package. You get free tethered access over Wi-Fi in Cloud hotspots but it’s absolutely criminal to charge you twice for the same 3G data that you’re already receiving as part of your deal. I’m absolutely fuming about this. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such blatant profiteering in all my life. This is the best advert for jailbreaking your iPhone I’ve ever seen. Jailbreaking allows you to tether your phone via Bluetooth or USB such that you can use the 3G internet connection on your phone passed on to your laptop effectively giving you mobile broadband. Already this morning the internet community is up in arms with petitions appearing on Facebook and Twitter for the O2 to charge reasonable prices for tethering and upgrades. iPhone on O2

Web Hosting Information - Web Hosting

Posted by on Friday, 5 June, 2009

Anyone who has even minimal access to a computer has an inkling of the broad reach and vast scope of the internet in today’s world. On a daily basis, new people are attracted to the internet with the hopes of having a website and making their fortune online. One basic essential to any internet business is a web hosting plan, and many people who are just launching their business are trying to find the best, low cost web hosting that they can find.

In this era, which is known as the “internet age,” most people in the Western world are very much aware of the power and reach of the internet. It is safe to say that every single day there are new entrepreneurs who decide they are ready to launch a website and grab their piece of the internet pie. In order to get a website on the net, one must have web server hosting and in most instances, people who are new to an online business are interested in finding good, low cost web hosting services.

In order for a website to be displayed it must be “hosted” on a special type of computer called a server, which is connected and accessible to the world wide web on a constant basis. Having a web server hosting account allows the person to post their web pages on their host server, which makes them available to the internet community. There are many different types of hosting accounts available, from free webhosting to managed dedicated servers, but the most popular type that people who are starting a web business look for is low priced, web hosting.

While it may seem that free webhosting is a better option for a brand new internet business than even low cost web hosting, there are a number of drawbacks to those free services. One problem is that often the free hosting company will put their own advertising on your website pages, which can distract your website visitors.

Some newbie entrepreneurs might believe that they should use a free webhosting service until their new enterprise starts to make some money. So they opt for low cost web hosting. But, there are some problems with almost all of the freebie hosting services and one of the main problems is that they will place their own advertising on all the pages hosted with their service.

When it comes to your hosting plan, you can expect to get what you pay for. If your website needs are minimal, then you will probably be satisfied with a cheaper, web hosting plan, as long as you check out the reliability of the company first. As the needs of your website grows and the server load and traffic demand becomes higher, you may need to seek out better web hosting plans, to ensure that your website is always up, is fully functional and is loading quickly for your visitors.

If you are in a situation where you need to find low cost web hosting because your business is new and you need to keep costs down, then make sure you check the track record of the hosting company before you start to build your website. Also, working with a web server hosting company that offers low-cost plans, mid-range plans, and plans that provide dedicated hosting services is a good indication that they are a provider that will be able to grow with your business.

If you need to keep your overhead and expenses minimal while getting your new enterprise off the ground, then low cost web hosting will probably be sufficient for your needs, as long as you are sure to choose a web host that is reliable and has a good track record. If you want a hosting provider that will be able to handle your site as it grows, then choose a provider that offers a variety of hosting plans, from low-cost to managed dedicated hosting.

MPAA argues in RealDVD courtroom that copying DVDs is illegal under the DMCA

dvddd

What’s another phrase for, “meh, who cares?” That’s what I’m thinking when I read that the MPAA tried to argue in court that making a personal copy of a DVD is illegal under the DMCA. Is it shocking to people that the MPAA would argue in favor of its own interests, possibly at the expense of the your ability to make rip a DVD? No. No it’s not.

This all “went down” at the Real DVD court hearing. Remember Real DVD? It is (was?) a piece of software that made copies of DVDs that would then only play within Real’s software; you couldn’t, say, burn a disc then play it on your stand-alone Sony or Samsung (or whatever) DVD or Blu-ray player. That wasn’t good enough for the MPAA, you’ll recall.

But back to the issue at hand—the MPAA hates each and every one of you.

Isn’t it strange that Real, a company so teased and mocked by the Internet community for years now (see: buffering jokes, etc.), is now in a position to argue for our rights as consumers to copy our legally purchased DVDs.
