But I bought one a couple months ago for a Christmas present for my parents and the device finally showed up a couple days before the big day.

Since I was planning to give it as a present, I didn’t want to configure the device, but I did want to do a lil unboxing for y’all so you can see what it looks like and what you get inside. The packaging does remind me of Apple products (the creators designed the iPod and the iPhone), but the real test will come when we try to install the thermostat. I’m slightly worried about my parents tackling this project, but I’ll let you know how they fare in a couple weeks.

Lots of middle-aged people are cynical about the truth that the younger generation looks to stroll via life plugged into iPod headphones. They complain that everywhere you go, you see a mindless youngster with iPod earphones dangling from their ear, not taking within a word they say.

Older people worry extreme use of iPod headphones and wandering by way of life plugged into mp3 players drastically transformed superior of life. Whilst genuine that rising use of mp3 players, iPod earphones, and portable music has modified some thing, although not necessarily for the worse.

Underneath scrutiny, the issues of over-using mp3 players in everyday life are unfounded. There are lots of quality-of-life enhancements brought about by the advent of individual music players, along with the downsides are very easily subverted.

Many folks practical experience greater enjoyment performing mundane actions in the workplace or round the home by listening to music they like. Lots of workplaces do not make it possible for staff to blast music. A personal, non-disruptive music player lets them to perform their occupation, and retain function from becoming such a drag. Happier workers are much more effective workers. So the ability to energy through get the job done listening to

Employees stuck commuting on busy, less-than-enjoyable public transit can plug in, and block out a stressful atmosphere. They will devote the commute growing their life’s enjoyment, rather than invest it getting hassled and stressed out.

One argument against iPod headphones could be the danger of long-term hearing harm. While correct that constantly blasting the decibel equivalent of a jackhammer into your ear ten hours each day will result in hearing loss, most intelligent individuals are capable of turning the volume down. Dilemma solved.

General, employing iPods can enhance strain ranges, productivity, and excellent of life. If wearing your iPod earphones during the day improves strain ranges, excellent of life, and productivity, they can not be that undesirable. Leave your iPod headphones in location, as well as your mp3 player on.

Apple has done a lot in terms of pushing sometimes marginal technology to the fore, something it may be able to do with NFC soon, too. But narrowing down that list to a few choice selections that stand out above the rest is surprisingly easy. Here are the Apple technological innovations I’m most thankful for.

1. The iPhone. It seems like a no-brainer, but in terms of actual impact on my day-to-day life, nothing beats Apple’s smartphone for transformative power. The iPhone was my first smartphone, and though I’ve temporarily strayed once or twice since then, it remains my go-to mobile device. But why should I be thankful for a device that costs me an arm and a leg each year when I upgrade, and also natters me incessantly with notifications, both meaningful and otherwise?

Because for all its downsides, the iPhone means that I can better stay in touch with friends and loved ones. It also provides tons of entertainment, has reduced the amount of devices I lug around on most trips from four or five to one or two, and includes all the joy of an iPod, too, which would’ve made this list if it wasn’t for the iPhone.

2. Screen sharing built into every Mac. If you manage a multi-Mac household or small business, you know what I’m talking about here. The ability to quickly and easily view and interact with the desktop of any Mac on your local Wi-Fi network is an amazing time-saver that lets me update, manage applications for and coordinate the efforts of all four Macs in operation at my home from my central work computer. Girlfriend runs into a technical problem? Connect, fix, done.

3. iTunes Home Sharing. This feature was one that made a lot of sense for long before it was implemented. Why shouldn’t any Mac or iOS device on your local network play back your iTunes library, so long as they have the proper credentials? That you can both stream and transfer music between libraries on Macs has saved me a lot of headaches, and size restrictions on iPod touches (which usually remain in the house anyways) are no longer an issue.

4. Combo audio in/out ports with remote control. Some will no doubt call me crazy for putting this on a list of tech I’m most thankful for, but considering how much I use it, I don’t think it’s out of place here. Obviously on iPhones and iPod touches it’s great for answering calls and controlling playback, but it also works terrifically well when on your MacBook or iPad watching movies or fielding Skype calls. It’s a thing that I never missed until I had it, and now can’t live without, even on my desktop iMac.

5. The App Store. Another pretty obvious one, but my appreciation has some qualifications. For example, I think the vast majority of the App Store is pretty much a waste of time; even well-designed apps aren’t necessarily useful in the long term. But for the few apps that remain glued to my home screen, like Delivery Status Touch, Next TTC, Instapaper and Reeder, the App Store’s thousands of low-quality, throwaway applications are more than endurable.

Those are my five, but I doubt they’re everyone else’s too. Let us know what Apple tech you’re most thankful for in the comments.

After offering to swap out a few faulty first gen iPod nanos in Korea back in 2009, it appears Apple has finally seen fit to get them out of owner’s pockets here in the US too. An email just sent to registered owners (included after the break) and notice posted on its replacement program site inform users the affected units were sold between September 2005 and December 2006. If you have one (seriously, yours still works?), stop using it right now and fill out the form at the link below to order a free replacement unit. The main inconvenience — other than finding out you’ve been walking around with the possibility of a “rare case” of overheating taking place in your skinny jeans — is an anticipated six-week lag between Apple receiving the old unit and shipping you out a replacement. The reason given for waiting so long to replace them is that when it comes to this issue “the likelihood increases as the battery ages” — and, it’s finally too late for you to run out and get a Zune. No word yet on which models will be sent out as replacements, but if yours is personalized, then sorry — no inscriptions available.

[Thanks, Paul & Jordan]

If its past offerings have been any indicator, Yamaha’s no stranger to pumping out attractive speaker docks for iDevices. Not surprisingly, the company’s managed to pour that design sense into its latest ruggedized portable system, the PDX-11. This octogonal unit features a 4-inch woofer and a 3/8-inch tweeter that can be powered by six AA-batteries, allowing for up to eight hours of on-the-go sound. Up top, you’ll find a 30-pin connection base for your iPhone or iPod, and there’s also a 3.5mm jack around back to play nice with other PMPs. Notably, the speaker’s metal carry handle and grill should keep it ready for a mild amount of city-slicking abuse — and in a choice of blue, white, green or black, we’d imagine it’ll look extra fresh doing so. To sweeten the deal further, a remote is included for extra control options. If your ready to take your tunes to the outdoors, the PDX-11 is available now for a block rockin’ hundred bucks. You’ll find full details at the source link below.

You?re at a party. It?s lame. There?s a laptop in the corner running iTunes, and people are taking turns DJing to try to liven up the crowd. Unfortunately, the guy with the fingerless gloves is hogging the computer, and his circa-1994 drum and bass jams are failing. Somebody sneaks in when?Guy isn?t looking and cues up a track you instantly recognize. Its steady pulse seems scientifically calibrated to produce good vibes, which it very well may have been. You find yourself bending your knees to the beat. The chorus kicks in and all bets are off. Everybody?s on the floor. The party has started. The next morning, you?re wondering, ?What was that song, and why did everybody know it?? Simple: It was in an iPod commercial ? an honor that has propelled many an indie band into the mainstream and cemented the iconic status of artists who were already getting attention.
