Auto Tools

Posted by on Wednesday, 25 August, 2010

Every owner of a car should own his own set of automotive gear. These are the tools that can be used to repair the car when it has something wrong with it.. Quality tools might be expensive, but they can save a lot of money in the long run. (Though if a problem persists, the auto owner should still have his automobile or motorcycle checked by a professional.)

A variety of automotive equipment is available, which includes specialized tools made for specific repairs. Some examples would be bearing pullers and extractors or camshaft locking devices.

Car owners should keep at least one car jack in their vehicle. Flat tires are common mishaps that happen during trips, and a jack will be needed to replace a tire. In this situation, a lug wrench is also essential. Without these tools, you could find yourself stranded along the roadside, waiting for help to arrive. You can also decide to carry a flashlight, gloves, a protective tarp, a rain poncho, a tire gauge, and some tire blocks.

Besides the lug wrench that you need for changing tires, you’ll also need specialized wrenches for spark plugs and oil filters Adjustable wrenches are also a must, for working with nuts and bolts in the car. Pliers are bound to come in handy. Various-sized screwdrivers are also needed.

For the home garage, a battery charger is the probably the most important item of automotive equipment that you will need, especially if you don’t use your vehicle often. Jumper cables and non-wire brushes for cleaning battery contacts are also useful in the home garage. A set of tools and a heavy-duty tool box are also must-have items. With these, you can do minor repair work without the need to bring the car to a professional service garage.

A car owner should also check the fluid levels in his car. Such automotive supplies as funnels, rags, hand degreaser, and rubber gloves are needed for the job. Stuck parts can be knocked out with a rubber mallet. To keep your tire pressure in check, you’ll need a tire pressure gauge.

There are so many companies that manufacture automotive equipment. With so many tools on the market these days, the buyer should remain aware of quality. A badly-made tool may cause the work to be more tedious and time consuming. Finally, keep in mind making the proper use of your tools.

As if having a dead battery in your vehicle wasn’t bad enough, there’s also the risk of doing some serious damage if you incorrectly hook up a set of jumper cables while trying to bring it back to life. Not so with Michelin’s Smart Jumper Cables. An electronic box in-between the sets of clamps lets you know when everything’s hooked up, properly completing the circuit, and once both batteries are connected any issues with polarity are automatically taken care of to keep sparking and ’splosions to a minimum. $40 available at most auto supply retailers.

I can’t honestly count the number of times I’ve dealt with a dead car battery. Most occasions were when I was younger, since my first car didn’t make a noise if you left the light on. However, it’s something that happens to everyone at some time or another. It’s not a hard problem to fix, you can just get a jump from another car, or from one of those cool portable batteries. Either way, you’re going to have to lift the hood and hook up a pair of jumper cables.

There are some people out there who are deathly afraid of doing anything under the hood of a car. For those people, there is the Easy Quick Jumper. This works off of the same idea as a set of jumper cables, only you plug each end into the cigarette adapter of the two cars. Turn on the car with a good battery, wait 5-10 minutes and you should be set. Honestly, this would be a lot easier to store than bulky jumper cables, and quicker to get into place. If you’ve ever had a car battery die in the dead of winter, you’ll appreciate it. Just $26 gets you this handy gadget. (An extra $20 gets you a better version that eliminates the need for another car.)
