Digging your 3D TVs, video game consoles and laptops? Thank the past — the New York Public Library is here to remind you that streographic entertainment has been blowing minds for over 100 years, and has the animated gifs to prove it. The Library recently introduced Stereogranimator, a web app that taps into the institution’s large collection of historical stereographs and allows user to convert them into wiggling GIF animations and 3D anaglyphs. The program was inspired by “Reaching for the Out of Reach,” a manual labor of animated stereographs started by San Francisco artist Joshua Heineman. The library currently has over 40,000 pairs of stenographic images just begging to be converted to depth-suggesting wigglepic. Interested? The link is below, friends — go ahead and create your own psudeo-3D view of history. Too lazy to make your own? Fine, read on for a shaky and colorful look at an orange tree.

The Haus of Meg will pay 5,000 in order to settle a claim that it consciously flogged laptops with batteries that could overheat or catch fire. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission slapped the company on the wrist for not issuing a recall quickly enough. It claimed that HP knew about 22 incidents involving battery ‘splosions by September 2007 — including one instance of a user being hospitalized, but didn’t begin issuing a recall until ten months later. By May 2011, the company had recalled over 90,000 affected units that were prone to the odd bout of spontaneous combustion. If you’re concerned you’ve got a duff battery, check out our list here.

Thin and light may be the name of the game for many when it comes to mobile computing, but there’s still plenty of folks who need a full-featured portable machine. Samsung’s Series 7 Chronos is just such a PC, packing an optical drive, numpad and discrete graphics beneath a brushed aluminum façade. While it may look like just another MacBook Pro clone running Windows 7, this Sammy’s got some surprises up its sleeve that set it apart from Apple’s offering (aside from a ,000 price difference) and other laptops running Redmond’s OS, for that matter. To find out what the Series 7 brings to the table and how it stacks up against its competition, you’ll have to read on past the break. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Is there room on the Ultrabook wagon for two new models from Samsung? There’s a 13-incher and a 14-incher, which both come under its Series 5 branding, but at first glance only the smaller model might deserve its seat: it has the requisite Sandy Bridge processor and an acceptable thickness (14.9mm), but it adds 500GB of HDD storage on top of a 16GB SSD, which brings its weight right up to the 1.4kg limit. Meanwhile, the 14-inch variant only just scrapes through the 21mm thickness criterion, but its 1.8kg weight seems well overboard. We can’t wait to see what happens when Intel inspects its ticket.
