It seems you can't swing a cat these days without infringing on someone's patent. The latest victim/perp is Microsoft; an Illinois doctor is suing them because of a patent he was granted in 2002 which allegedly covers the Zune's ability to tag a song directly from the radio and then download that song once an internet connection is established. Obviously it's for the lawyers to work out the details, but it seems to me what he must have been granted was more a method of identifying and later purchasing a song, not the plain act of tagging and downloading later.

Patents, patents, everywhere! It seems you can’t swing a cat these days without infringing on someone’s patent. The latest victim/perp is Microsoft; an Illinois doctor is suing them because of a patent he was granted in 2002 which allegedly covers the Zune’s ability to tag a song directly from the radio and then download that song once an internet connection is established. Obviously it’s for the lawyers to work out the details, but it seems to me what he must have been granted was more a method of identifying and later purchasing a song, not the plain act of tagging and downloading later.

But all the Zune device does is copy the artist and song directly from the digital FM stream, and then search for it in the Zune store if an internet connection is available, right? This is an ability several devices have, including the iPod Nano, though certainly all their methods differ slightly.

But who knows? Maybe this guy has a point and his patent does include this stuff. If that’s the case, then may justice be done. I’m more skeptical of his claim that he pitched Microsoft with the idea in 2006; he claims to have emailed them, and includes some of the text — half of it is in ALL CAPS. I have a feeling Microsoft tends to ignore ALL CAPS emails.

What’s the likely outcome? Man, I don’t know! I’m not a lawyer!

The “de-make” is a class of indie game where a popular new game is crushed into a low-fidelity environment; we’ve seen D-Pad Hero, Gang Garrison II (my favorite), and a whole competition based on the idea over at The Independent Gaming Source.

The latest victim of this ridiculous trend is Left 4 Dead, which has apparently been recreated in loving 8-bit fashion by one Eric Ruth. It’s worth mentioning that it had an even more deconstructive de-make in Left 4k Dead, but this one is more extensive. Would it be too much to ask to make a zombie version of River City Ransom?

The game, about 30% done at this point, will be released to PC gamers in early January and will comprise all four missions from start to finish, with special infected and everything. So awesome.

The FCC is probably one of the biggest spoilers of fun in the electronic world. They spill more CE beans than anyone else. The latest victim: the Asus Eee Keyboard. We can finally see what’s under the hood thanks to recently filed documents.

An Intel Atom CPU along with a 945GSE chipset powers Windows XP Home along with a Broadcom AV-VD905 video decoder. It also packs 1GB of RAM, either 16 or 32GB of flash storage, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, HDMI and VGA outputs, and a 4-hour battery. There is also the standard assortment of USB ports, headphone and mic jacks, and power adapter. As for the display, it’s a 5-inch 800 x480 touchscreen.

The keyboard throws 720p video/data to a display via an on-board Ultra-Wideband system. Video has a range of 5-meters while everything else should be fine up to 10-meters. The UWB receiver is equipped with two USB ports, a mini-USB, audio out and HDMI-out.

So far it seems that the device has lived up to the concept Devin spent some time with back at CES ‘09.
