Wow… I know we had shifted into a multi-touch world, but even I had underestimated the growing popularity of tablets. At CES earlier this year, more than a few tablets were on display. Yesterday, Google announced the Android Honeycomb OS for tablets. And now, one of the key suppliers to the tablet market is calling for a tablet boom.

At its annual meeting in New York, Corning, the Corning, NY-based company that makes glass-based products, said that the demand for its Gorilla Glass, a key component of tablets and touch screen phones are on an upswing. They are forecasting a total of 180 million tablet units by 2014 versus 20 million in 2010. James P. Clappin, president, Corning Glass Technologies Group pointed out in a press statement that the personal computer market that includes tablets will grow at a compound annual rate of about 16% through 2014.

I have been following the emergence of Gorilla Glass for some time now. Corning, is an old school company that rose to meteoric highs during the optical boom of the late 1990s. The telecom crash pulverized the company, but since then the company clawed its way back, thanks to demand for LCD televisions. In 2008, the company started selling Gorilla Glass, and since then it has become a much-in-demand product.

What is Gorilla glass? It’s basically a super-strong LCD glass, which is produced much like LCD, then is given a boost by soaking in a potassium nitrate solution. This process is essentially how soda lime glass is made. The Gorilla glass marries the hardness and scratch-resistant nature of old glass milk bottles with thin and light LCD glass. Those two qualities — tough and light — make it perfect for the smartphone market.

Gorilla Glass is used by devices such as iPhone, iPad, Droid, Samsung Galaxy Range and Dell Streak among others.

At its analyst day, it seems Corning indicated that Gorilla Glass was going into growth mode and the company is notching more design wins from smartphones, tablets and other devices. According to company officials, Gorilla Glass is Corning’s fastest growing product. “We expect the number of these devices using cover glass to quadruple over the next four years, presenting us with a significant opportunity for growth,” said Clappin.

“This is a world of specialty glass with vivid displays, multi-functional ‘smart’ surfaces, and interactive devices,” said CEO Wendell Weeks. He argued that with fiber networks growing across the planet and mobile device demand booming, the company is on its way to billion in sales. The company is also expecting the fiber to the home market to grow 18 percent for the next few years. And optical wireless is another area for growth for the company.

It is not all-smooth sailing for the company – Japan’s Asahi Glass has recently introduced their version of Gorilla Glass called Dragontrail and will be competing for similar customers as Corning. They are hoping to take about 30 percent of the market by 2012 and have sales of 0 million. Analysts expect Coring to sell a billion dollars worth of Gorilla Glass in 2011 - a major chunk of that coming from tablets and touch-based phones.

Lcd Televisions have forever changed how we experience video in your own home. In the space you’ll save using their sleek designs to the excellent picture quality they deliver, Lcd TVs offer great benefits when compared to traditional tube televisions.

Flat Panels is usually mounted to the wall because of the thin and light-weight design. They’re able to also provide a more consistent picture across the screen thoroughly greatly assist perfectly flat screens. You can get a a great deal more accurate picture using a lcd compare to a tube television because they’re digital displays, in order that they work by illuminating a grid of pixels. These pixels comprise of three sub pixels, which have been with the color red, blue, and green. For that reason, you may have millions, or perhaps vast amounts of possible colors which might be displayed. The greatest drawback of buying a lcd TV is the price regarding it, though as with the majority of electronics the value is rapidly falling.

Currently Lcd TVs have either an LCD or possibly a Plasma screen. Deciding on the best style of lcd can create a significant affect on your enjoyment in the TV. It is important to think about how we is going to be using the lcd before you make a purchasing decision.

Below you’ll discover a few questions our product specialists recommend our customers to contemplate before pc flat panel television.

How big on the display size will i want? If you are considering finding a screen under 40 inches, then LCD is the only flat panel option. This is due to Plasma TVs generally are not created in screen sizes under 40 inches.

The screen size you obtain should rely upon how big the space you want to use it in is and just how far you propose to sit down far from it. It is recommended that you sit around 1½ and 2½ times how big the the screen. For example have a very 48-inch (4 feet) TV; the suitable viewing distance could be between 6-10 feet away.

How bright is a room I plan on placing the lcd in? If you are putting the flat panel in a bright room that doesn’t have blinds, than you should look at getting an LCD lcd his or her screens are less reflective to light supplying you with less glare.

Must i be viewing things with static (still) images on the watch’s screen? Watching programs or playing video games which has a static image on the screen (like a news ticker) for long periods of time can give you liable to burn-in with Plasma tvs. This is simply not a worry for LCD TVs. Though, if you intend on mainly watching movies devoid of static images, you should think of a Plasma television to obtain more life-like colors than most LCD TVs usually provide.

Do you value the force efficiency of your flat panel? LCD Televisions are usually considerably more cost effective rival similar Plasma TVs.

Will i want rich, warm colors displayed on screen? Plasma TVs present you with richer and warmer colors than most LCD TVs do. This makes the colours displayed on the screen more life-like. Plasmas also provide you with much deeper black levels.

Both sorts of flat panels supply you with excellent display quality, and provide you with a much better viewing experience than would a conventional tube television. However, as we’ve discussed above, one type will most likely fit an individuals needs much better than another relying on that persons TV watching/using habits.

Saving our planet is important, but that doesn’t mean you have to live in a tree and forgo your gadget pleasures. There are plenty of gadgets out there that will help you live a greener life and while most LCD televisions don’t come with a way to turn them off you can get devices to help combat that. Here are some of my favourite ones.

Cranking MP3 player

With a 1GB capacity and a design that won’t win any red dot awards, the main USP for this new MP3 player is its green credentials. One minute’s worth of cranking will give you playback of 10 minutes – although there is USB charging too for when your arm gets tired. Including shipping, it’ll cost 55 euros, which is around 43 pounds, but consider what you’ll save on batteries.

Husqvarna solar powered automatic lawnmower

It might set you back a cool 2000 pounds but working autonomously, the lawnmower will cut up to 2300 square metres of grass and can be programmed to come on at certain times or days of the week. Users can define the cutting area by laying a metal wire around the edge of their garden. The auto mower also has sensors in the device so it can avoid garden furniture. Solving the problem of collecting the grass, the motor’s three sharp blades cut the grass short enough as to scatter it back on the lawn.

The mower will cut for around 40 minutes, and then charge for 40 minutes in its charging station, however the solar panels on its back mean that on a sunny day the device will be able to stay out cutting for up to 50% longer.

Efergy meter

The Efergy meter is a compact monitor that allows the user to see electricity consumption in real time in your home. Made up of three components: a portable display monitor, a sensor which is clipped around the power cable feeding electricity into the premises, and a transmitter which is connected to the sensor and which sends the information to the monitor the data on the screen of the Efergy meter is refreshed every 5 seconds, so the impact on power usage of turning an electrical appliance on or off can be seen immediately. The Efergy meter costs 44.95 pounds.

The Standby Buster

You want to turn your television off at the main, but the sockets at the back and out of the reach of your arm. The Stanby buster basically gives you a remote for your plug. The easy to use, remote-controlled electrical socket lets you switch off multiple appliances completely rather than leaving them in standby mode – all from a single button press. Sockets are simply plugged into existing power outlets allowing any connected appliances to be switched on and off using the remote control. Standby Buster uses Radio Frequency (RF) rather than Infra-Red (IR) to switch appliances on and off, so it is not impaired by objects in its way.

Moixa USBCELL batteries

The USBCELL as an environmentally-friendly alternative to normal AA batteries. The top of one side flips up to reveal a USB connector, and the battery simply plugs into an open port. It takes five hours to charge one of the cells if it was fully discharged; each battery has a capacity of 1300mAH. The USBCELL cost around 12.99 pounds for two AA batteries.

The mower will cut for around 40 minutes, and then charge for 40 minutes in its charging station, however the solar panels on its back mean that on a sunny day the device will be able to stay out cutting for up to 50 percent longer.

Efergy meter.

The Efergy meter costs 44.95.

The Standby Buster.

Moixa USBCELL batteries.

The USBCELL as an environmentally-friendly alternative to normal AA batteries. The top of one side flips up to reveal a USB connector, and the battery simply plugs into an open port. It takes five hours to charge one of the cells if it was fully discharged; each battery has a capacity of 1300 mAH. The USBCELL cost around 12.99 for two AA batteries.

These eco friendly gadgets are becoming increasingly popular as people have a growing environmental conscience.

There are plenty of gadgets out there that will help you live a greener life and while most LCD televisions don’t come with a way to turn them off you can get devices to help combat that. Here are some of my favourite ones.

Cranking MP3 player.
