Many different studies have been done about the former and present Presidents of the United States. Some have tried to link certain characteristics to be similar from various Presidents like that many of them reached the Eagle Scout ranking in the Boy Scouts or that the taller candidate usually wins in the final election of a President. This one will discuss the various musical abilities among the past Presidents and which ones played the concert flute and what one performed a number on his alto saxophone many times during his presidency. Could having musical abilities be another one of those common traits that Presidents have to link them to one another?

One of our earliest presidents known as Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President and is best known for creating the Declaration of Independence as well as his important role in the Louisiana Purchase. He was said to be quite musically inclined and played several different instruments of cello, clavichord and the violin. The 6th president of the United States, John Quincy Adams, who was commander in chief and lived from 1767-1848 was best known for putting together the Monroe Doctrine but a little known fact about him was that he loved playing the flute and was very accomplished at it.

Another violin player was the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson. He lived from 1856- 1924 and was the creator of the League of Nations. Our 33rd president, Harry Truman was the President near the end of World War II, played the piano. He was a very good pianist and many times performed to entertain important political figures that were visiting. Another piano playing President was Richard Nixon who was the 37th President and is best known for the Watergate Scandal. In addition to the piano, Nixon also played the accordian and did so often for his children.

The most recent President to have shown his love for music and his ability at playing an instrument was the 42nd President, Bill Clinton. Besides John F. Kennedy he was the youngest President to be elected who was only in his 30′s. He is an enormous jazz and blues fan and played the saxophone. He played actively through high school and never quit saying that it was one of his true passions. While campaigning for President in 1992 he went on the Arsenio Hall Show and performed Heartbreak Hotel on his saxophone wearing his sunglasses. Until then he was behind in the polls and a lot of Americans think that this helped him gain popularity and move on to win the Presidential seat. In order to raise money to support Aids research, Bill Clinton had auctioned off his saxophone and collected $180,000.

Music is just another hobby that many Americans enjoy and apparently several American presidents enjoyed doing as well. It proved that they had other talents besides being smart public servants and something that many people in the US probably didn’t realize about them.

Here’s a little known fact: Henry Ford used natural material like hemp and stray to reinforce plastic components in his cars. Now, Ford is at it again with a small quarter trim bin found in the third row of the Ford Flex made out of wheat straw bio-filled polypropylene. Wheat straw!

Sure, it’s just one small part in one vehicle, but according to the numbers, the impact on the environment sounds at least significant.

Treehugger,

This modest step, says Ford, will cut the need for some 20,000 pounds of petroleum and prevent 30,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

This so-called wheat straw is the byproduct of wheat harvesting and isn’t exactly useful. Chances are that if this trial works out on this one part, Ford, and the rest of the industry, will look into ways to further incorporate green materials into their vehicles. I, for one, look forward to the day that my steering wheel is made from corn and I can spreed a little butter and salt on it to enjoy a nice snack while driving down I-75.

The HomeFinder screw-in light controller from Westek might seem like a simple idea, but if you live with family members who may one day need the assitance of paramedics, it might end up being an invaluable tool.

It screws into a light socket and accepts a standard bulb, and when the light switch is flipped twice the unit will flash for 20 minutes making it easier for emergency assistance to find your home, or even someone less vital like the pizza delivery guy. The flashing can be cancelled at any time by simply turning the switch off, and there’s a sensor to ensure it only turns on after dusk. $10.91 from Amazon.

And here’s a little known fact, I actually spent three weeks as the prime suspect in a ‘porchlight flasher’ case, but I was eventually exonerated when the police realized I never actually leave this computer. So not only does blogging pay the bills, but it also turns out to be a pretty solid alibi!

*True story!

Samsung has just announced a pair of LCD monitors with built-in TV features that promise to “eliminate the line between work productivity and HD entertainment,” according to the press release. And speaking of that press release, it appears that Samsung has also eliminated the most basic and important spec from the products’ list of features.

Price? Nope, that’s there — $250 for the 933HD+ and $330 for the 2333HD. Resolution? 1360×768 for the 933HD+ and 1920×1080 for the 2333HD. Response time, contrast ratio, that stuff is all there too.

It’s a little known fact that for every one person that writes about technology products, there are 50 public relations people. Maybe 100. It might even be 1000. I don’t know the exact number except to say that they’re everywhere and they all somehow have my phone number and they all somehow know where I live, so I certainly don’t want to brass anyone off but see if you can tell me what’s missing from this press release:

Samsung HDTV Monitors Eliminate Line between Work Productivity and HD Entertainment

Samsung’s 933HD+ and 2333HD LCD Monitors Offer Extensive Range of Entertainment Options

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Samsung Electronics America Inc., a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Corporation, the number one worldwide brand of LCD display products, today announced the debut of its entertainment-centric monitors, the 933HD+ and 2333HD. At an estimated street price of $249.99 and $329.99, respectively, both monitors produce picture perfect HD quality in a sleek design and are now available from Samsung resellers and retailers.
