The last we heard of a reasonably sized Sony OLED display was way back in June, even though it was just the panel itself rather than a full package like the XEL-1 OLED TV. But yesterday, Sony unveiled a couple of new OLED monitors for its Trimaster EL professional range: on the left we have the BVM-E250 25-incher, accompanied by the BVM-E170 17-inch sibling on the right. The “Super Top Emission OLED” panels on both models boast an RGB 10-bit driver, 100 cd/m2 standard luminance, 1920 x 1080 resolution, plus an impressive 178-degree viewing angle both vertically and laterally. We’ll save the rest of the technical details for you video nuts in the press release (along with a video) after the break, but let us warn you that these don’t come cheap: the E250 will be available in mid-April for around ¥2.4 million (,910), and the E170 in June for around ¥1.3 million (,710).

Are you looking for a small mountable touchscreen display? Mimomonitors has just released its latest 7-inch USB touchscreen display, the Mimo 720-F "Flex Screen" touchscreen monitor. The 720-F is designed to be easily mountable in a wide variety of places, thanks to its VESA 75 standard. To make things easy for you, it uses your standard USB 2.0 port for both power and data transfer, so you only have to worry about one cable. The display offers an 800 x 480 resolution picture, along with a 400:1 contrast ratio and 350cd/m2 brightness. It supports Windows XP, Vista and Intel-based Macs, though surprisingly there wasn't any mention of windows 7. If you're interested in this, you should know that it'll set you back $200.

OLEDs, which are said to lead the next wave of innovation in the TV space (after back-lit LCDs and 3D displays), come with plenty of advantages: they produce gorgeous images, they are self-luminous, light, and they're flexible - very flexible.

We're about to get yet another 3D display. This time, it's Toshiba Mobile Display Corp. that's prepping such a screen, an autostereoscopic (glasses-free), 21-inch 3D HD display "for use in next-generation 3D monitors", to be more exact. Toshiba says the main selling points is that its new "integral imaging system" with 9-parallax design makes it possible for users to view 3D images from a wider range of viewing angles.

We’re about to get yet another 3D display. This time, it’s Toshiba Mobile Display Corp. that’s prepping such a screen, an autostereoscopic (glasses-free), 21-inch 3D HD display “for use in next-generation 3D monitors”, to be more exact. Toshiba says the main selling points is that its new “integral imaging system” with 9-parallax design makes it possible for users to view 3D images from a wider range of viewing angles.

According to the company, that system required the development of a new “ultra-high-definition LCD module”, but ultimately leads to less eye fatigue and produces better images than 2-parallax 3D displays. The company teamed up with Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in the development of the HD display.

The device features WXGA (1,280×800) resolution, 480 cd/m2 brightness, and ±15 degrees (horizontal) 3D viewing angle. Toshiba expects it to be mainly used for advertisement and entertainment purposes. The display will be showcased next month at the SID 2010 International Symposium in Seattle.

3D images produced by the parallax barrier-based IPS panel can be viewed without glasses. The display features a 480×854 resolution (which Hitachi calls “FWVGA”), 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and 400cd/m2 brightness. These specs (almost) put the Hitachi panel on par with the 3D display Sharp announced a few days ago. The Sharp model has the same contrast ratio and resolution, but it’s bigger (3.4 inches) and brighter (500cd/m2 brightness).

The interesting question now is whether Hitachi (and not Sharp) might be providing this new display for Nintendo’s portable 3D gaming system 3DS when it comes out later this year (it’s not a touchscreen though). Both companies have been delivering displays for the first-generation DS (and all generations after that): Sharp began in 2004, Hitachi followed one year later. We’ll probably find out in June when Nintendo shows the 3DS at the E3 game conference in LA.

The HP3-87 will be marketed by HORI as a PS3 Slim docking station. The device is also compatibe with torne, Sony’s Japan-only DVR/TV tuner for PS3.

It’s licensed by Sony and sized at 295×255×55mm. Buyers also get a built-in stereo speaker, two headphone jacks, and component/ multi-AV out interfaces.

Hori is planning to start selling the HP3-87 in Japan on May 27 for $280. No word yet from the company regarding an international release, but Hori says the model announced today is for use in Japan only (it can switch between NTSC and Pal though).

Glasses-free 3D displays for mobile devices are nothing new. Hitachi, for example, started selling a 3D-enabled handset [JP] in Japan as early as last year. The Hitachi product didn’t make much of a splash, but Sharp’s new parallax barrier-based 3D display for mobile devices (which the company announced today) appears to be pretty cool.

The panel Sharp showcased at a press conference in Tokyo for the first time is extremely thin, can switch between regular 2-D and 3-D modes, doesn’t require glasses for viewing images in 3D, and will be available with or without touchscreen capabilities. It features a screen size of 3.4 inches, 480 x 854 resolution, a contrast ratio of 1,000:1, and 500 cd/m2 brightness (Sharp claims the image quality is the best in the industry).

Here’s how the 3D effect works (from the press release):

This parallax barrier, which has a series of vertical slits, is incorporated into an ordinary LCD to control the path of light reaching the right and left eyes, thus creating a sense of depth.

Sharp says their screens will be used for cameras and cell phones, but there is a chance the upcoming Nintendo 3DS will have them, too. This is pure speculation, of course, but Sharp has been providing LCD displays for the Nintendo DS since 2004 (Hitachi joined one year later) – so there is a close relationship between both companies.

Sharp plans to sell both types of the 3D display (touchscreen and conventional) from the first half of fiscal 2010.

The Asus Designo monitor line was already hot with its striking good looks but the series just got a whole lot more enticing thanks to LED backlighting.

There are four new models in all, each with the aforementioned feature. The Asus MS248 (23.6″), MS238 (23″), MS228 (21.5″) and MS208 (20″) all sport LED backlight that can deliver 10,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 250 cd/m2 brightness in up to 1080p resolutions. But calm down. Pricing or availability wasn’t mentioned.
