E-PL1 advantages over E-P2:

Dedicated REC button

Magnified live view button

Up to 14x magnification

Lighter low-pass filter

Built-in flash

E-P2 advantages over E-PL1:

Two control dials

More direct-access buttons (including ISO and white balance)

Superior image stabilization system

AE/AF lock button

Orientation sensor

Larger LCD

More substantial construction

1/180 sec flash sync speed (rather than 1/160)

Maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 sec (rather than 1/2000)

Virtual level display

Built-in stereo mics/speakers

Optional wireless remote

So yeah, the E-P2 is of course a better camera, but the E-Pl1 doesn’t really seem half bad considering it’s nearly half the price.

Want to take pictures like these? No amount of macro is going to help you there; you need a true microscope accessory, and fortunately Nikon wants to sell you one. For just under $1400, you can get this Fabre Photo EX Camera Microscope and be taking pictures of raindrops on butterflies’ wings in no time.

It’s far from a professional product, but like so many other photo accessories and peripherals, it’s most of the functionality you need at a fraction of the price of the pro version. This one compromises on build quality and attachment, but as you can see in the review, it takes perfectly excellent pictures. Magnification is limited to 66x (if you have a cropped sensor), though that’s plenty for most stuff.

It is mighty expensive, though — and since it’s a Japanese product you have to get it from an importer, which raises the price by nearly 50%. Still, if you must see your sweat glands up close, this is a great way to do it.

Simple space telescopes can be costly so you need to know where to shop and what to look for. However, getting a glimpse into the heavens doesn’t have to carry an astronomical price! Yet inexperienced, amateur astronomy buffs can get tricked into buying expensive equipment and accessories that they don’t need.

Telescopes can be very expensive, so before you invest in one, ask yourself why you want one and how serious you are about exploring astronomy. If it’s going to be a casual hobby, then there’s really no need to buy a high end telescope with lots of expensive accessories. You also have to evaluate your needs.

space telescopes
A local astronomy club can help you with this. For example, in what kind of environment will you be using the telescope? Will you need to assemble and dismantle it frequently as you go from location to location?

Do you have the option of renting a telescope instead of buying one? Sometimes a used telescope or even night vision binoculars can be better option than a new, costly piece of equipment.

Most people interested in space telescope think that magnifying power should be their prime concern but that’s actually not true. This is why it’s so important that you learn telescope terminology before you get to a store. An eyepiece is really all you need to improve a telescope’s magnification.

To calculate the telescope’s maximum useful magnification, multiply the size of the lens or mirror in inches by 50. For example, a 4-inch telescope can be used with eyepieces that provide up to about 200 times the intensification. An 8-inch telescope’s highest useful magnification is 400 x, and so on.

scope accessories
To get an idea of the kind of magnification you want, take a look through as many different eyepieces as you can. Consulting astronomy clubs or a planetarium are great ways to uncover more information about cost, maintenance and accessories.

As a consumer, you should be well informed before you even go into a store. Dealers make a lot of money by convincing inexperienced amateurs to purchase expensive telescope accessories that they don’t need.

Most experienced stargazers do not recommend buying department store brands either. To save yourself money, buy a smaller model to learn on. If you find that you use the telescope regularly and need a more powerful piece of equipment, then you will be more informed about making a larger and more expensive purchase.

Used telescopes are also a good option. For example, if you’ve joined an astronomy club, then you may be able to purchase a used telescope from someone looking to upgrade. Some clubs also rent telescopes for a small fee. However, remember that buying a used telescope usually means you won’t get a warranty.

amateur astronomy
For the telescope casual user, bigger is not necessarily better. While a bigger telescope will give you more power, it may not be practical for someone who wants to go from location to location. A smaller piece of equipment that is easy to transport and use is actually better for beginners because they can concentrate more on the stars and less on the equipment.

For astronomy amateurs, there really is no need to splash out on an expensive piece of equipment. It’s a great way to find out which piece of equipment will give you the best view of the heavens.

The telescopes available to people interested in astronomy are fantastic tools. They are quite powerful and can allow you to view incredible sights that you can’t see with the naked eye. The telescopes available on the market today are wonderful for anyone who wishes to take a closer look at what’s happening in the sky.

Before you buy a telescope there are a few things that you should consider. These factors include cost, whether you will be using it in an urban or rural setting, how frequently the telescope will be used, and how much magnification you want.

sky telescope
Telescopes for city dwellers require a moderate aperture scope while a rural stargazer will need a scope with as much aperture as possible. Aperture refers to the diameter of the lens or mirror collecting the light. The bigger the mirror (or lens), the more light is collected and fainter objects can be seen.

Amateurs usually spend between $250 and $600. Of course, the more scope accessories you buy the more you’ll spend, so it’s best to buy them later once you know exactly what you want. However, for the serious stargazer, a large, high powered telescope would be an option.

Most people interested in astronomy think that magnifying power should be their key concern. That’s absolutely untrue. To improve the magnification of a sky telescope, all you have to do is change the eyepiece.

telescope accessories
To calculate the telescope’s maximum useful magnification, multiply the size of the lens or mirror in inches by 50. For example, a 4-inch telescope can be used with eyepieces that provide up to about 200 x. An 8-inch telescope’s highest useful magnification is 400 x, and so on.

To get an idea of the kind of magnification you want, observe through as many telescopes as you can. An astronomy club is a good group to join or a visit to a planetarium is a good idea too, to experiment with a variety of scopes and find out more information about cost, maintenance and scope accessories.

When it comes to telescopes for the amateur astronomer, bigger may not necessarily be better. Yes, the telescope that is bigger will give you more power, but carrying it around and assembling it can be a chore.

amateur astronomy
Beginners generally will use the telescope more if it’s simple. For the telescope science buff, there really is no need to splash out on an expensive piece of equipment. Start small and get a bigger telescope as your knowledge of the universe grows.

If I did have an extra five grand laying around and felt like buying a Leica, I’d be glad to use this service. The logo on the top always bugged me — I can take it off. I don’t want real leather — I can choose classic leatherette.

The service isn’t offered for the M8 or M8.2 yet; maybe Leica wants to keep it special for the OG Leica fans.
