Nokia announces Booklet 3G, a mini 10inch laptop

Posted by on Monday, 24 August, 2009

In a departure from its usual mobile phone product launch, Nokia has announced a Windows based mini-laptop PC, the Nokia Booklet 3G. Powered by an Intel Atom processor, the Nokia Booklet 3G promises up to 12 hours of battery life. Weighting just 1.25 kilograms and measuring slightly more than two centimeters thin, it offers – as you might expect – a broad range of connectivity options, including 3G/ HSPA and Wi-Fi, giving users high speed access to the Internet, including Nokia’s range of Ovi services

For the Rich and Clueless: $32,000 for a Core 2 Quad Mini PC!

Posted by on Monday, 10 August, 2009

Gaiser might be on the wrong market, trying to appeal to geeks with the big bucks with its $32,000 gold and diamond plated mini PC. Surely the first-class aesthetics are appealing, but how would you explain paying that much money for a quad-core PC and integrated graphics to tech-heads?

In other words, rich people may admire the craftsmanship (a shell of three kinds of Gold sprinkled with some Swarovski crystals) of the so-named “design09 | TRICOLOR Gold”. But most geeks aren’t exactly eye candy people. Pretty things only appeal to them, but only if significant substance backs up the style. Expecting them to pay good money for what’s basically eye candy (only) is a pointless exercise.

Am I mistaken? Gaiser High End PC is of course in business, and they offer several models. That makes me think they’re enjoying a certain degree of success, selling enough to pay the bills at least, and much more if they sell at a huge profit. Does that mean a significant number of the rich and clueless fall victim to these PCs’ gold luster? In any case, I’d only pay $32,000 if a PC was finished with luxury materials, and literally had the best consumer-level hardware inside. An Intel Core i7 975XE, two GTX 295s anyone, and a 6TB hard disk RAID array anyone?

EGG Mouse mini: Japanese company sells extra-compact PC mouse

There are quite a few mini PC mice coming out of Japan, but today Tokyo-based Elecom announced a model, which doesn’t seem very ergonomic to me. The so-called EGG mouse mini [JP] is the smaller version of a mouse Elecom rolled out last year (the – you guessed it – EGG mouse, which you can also see on the picture above).

But at least it looks cute. The optical EGG mouse mini will be available in Japan from the end of this month. Buyers can choose between eight different colors (price: $30).

Ask the Japan Trend Shop or Geek Stuff 4 U in case you want to get one shipped outside Japan.

Archos 9 Windows 7-based mini PC out in September

Queston: When does a media tablet become a mini PC? Answer: When it’s an Archos 9. Another year, another two inches and a Windows 7 platform for everyone’s favourite PMP. The Archos 9 sounds more like a netbook with its Intel Atom Z515 800/1200Mz CPU, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 120GB HDD and other assorted capped up letters. In fact, it basically is, minus the keyboard. Word has it the 8.9″ display is multi-touch with a nice new Li-polymer battery for maximum power efficiency. Connectivity-wise it’s got all you could need with 3G, ‘tooth 2.1, Ethernet and Wi-Fi, and the whole thing weighs under 800g; stereo speakers, a VGA out and 1.3-megapixel webcam and that’s about your lot. It should be available early autumn for 500€. Not cheap but then these things never are. UPDATE: Just received the official on this and it also has a DVB-T tuner and will be followed by a 12″ version in 2010. Archos (via UMPC portal) Archos 7 preview:
