Here in the states, T-Mobile has been no stranger to screw-ups, but we’d always just figured that their UK counterparts were stand-up guys. After all, they’re British – as we all know, every one from that side of the pond is charming, affable, and rocks a bloody good accent. Unfortunately, it looks like not everyone employed there is as scrupulous as their customers would hope – a story by the BBC has confirmed that T-Mobile UK employees sold private subscriber data to a third-party broker.

Rumor has it that T-Mobile UK and Orange UK will merge, creating a 28.4 million customer uber-carrier. The next largest carrier will be Telefonica’s O2, the former heavyweight.

The deal will be signed by November and the merged company will share networks and CRM services in the UK. This does not directly effect T-Mobile’s German parent company except in that it will lose its subsidiary in the UK.

T-Mobile launches Pulse, first pay-as-you-go Android phone

Posted by on Thursday, 3 September, 2009

T-Mobile UK this morning announced the Pulse, the first pay-as-you-go Android 1.5 smartphone and the third coming from the network operator.

Available for £180 starting October exclusively on T-Mobile, it boasts a 3.5″ HVGA touchscreen display, the biggest yet on an Android handset, a 3.2-megapixel camera and a TeleNav-powered GPS (more specs below).

The new device comes courtesy of Huawei, which had been rumored to be working with T-Mobile since displaying a device at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year.

More details about the device:

The phone runs on a Qualcomm’s MSM7200A chipset and weighs 130g. It features a trackball and a 3.5″ HVGA touchscreen display with auto-rotation.

The T-Mobile Pulse also features a 3.2 mega pixel, auto-focus camera (no flash) that allows photos to be uploaded straight to the Internet, a 2GB internal memory and a micro SD card slot for storing media. The handset also offers access to corporate e-mail through the Road sync client, and boasts enhanced social networking and community features.

Amazon working hard to get Kindle to the UK before Christmas

Posted by on Wednesday, 15 July, 2009

amazon-kindle-2-uk2Amazon is trying really really hard to get the Kindle out by Christmas in the UK, and you can’t hardly blame them. Given how successful the ebook reader has been in the US, you can’t help but expect the same results on the other side of the pond.

Getting the Kindle in the UK hasn’t been an easy task for Amazon. They’ve been met with resistance from the major cell providers like Vodaphone and Orange, largely due to the fact that they have competing products in the same market segment.

Amazon is rumored to have finalized a deal with Qualcomm, and is currently negotiating publishing deals with the news and magazine companies.

RUMOUR: T-Mobile UK to sell iPhone 3G

Could it be true? Do we want it to be true? Is T-Mobile really in negotiations with Apple to break O2′s exclusivity on the Jesus Phone? In truth, I don’t know, but a report on the Register says that’s what’s agoin’ on. Now, bear in mind that this would only be a deal to stock the iPhone 3G and not the 3GS which only arrived a few weeks back. That’s still staying with O2 only but I have heard some time ago that the deal between them and Apple is to run out in the next couple of years; 2011, I believe it was. The story goes that T-Mobile is keen to climb the UK mobile provider ranks from its current fourth spot and prove to the Deutsche Telekom bosses that it’s worth keeping. Stocking the iPhone would certainly be an interesting way of doing that, providing that the UK market isn’t already saturated with them. The deal would be attractive to Apple who currently rely on network subsidies to keep the cost of the iPhone as low as possible. Naturally, all parties have refused to comment on the matter apart from T-Mobile who called the report “merely speculation”. It may well be but I thought you’d better hear it just in case there’s a kernel of truth within. Wouldn’t want to surprise you all with an announcement like that out of the blue. So, let’s say it does happen. Good thing? Would you go for a 3G over a 3GS? Would it make any difference if it was the same price as on O2? And do you think it could spark a mini price war if not?
