Promises, promises. Motorola wasn’t exactly fibbing when it said all future phones would ship with unlockable bootloaders, as it appears they will. There’s just one teensy obstacle impeding the joy of ROM flashers worldwide: it’s up to the carriers’ discretion to keep it that way. In a chat with AusDroid, Moto’s VP of Enterprise Mobile Devices, Christy Wyatt, revealed that the RAZR would indeed be the OEM’s first device to ship with a software unlock. Unfortunately, as in the case of the DROID variant, operators like Verizon have chosen to put the smack down on any custom hackery, citing the typical concerns over security. But it’s not all grey wireless skies, the handset’s global version will ship with the code on board, so your best bet for CM7 and MIUI looks to be an off-contract option. Or, you know, there’s always that Big Red Galaxy Nexus.

Inside the ultra-thin design are advanced features like MPEG4 video playback, Bluetooth® wireless technology, a digital camera and more. And with the precision-cut keypad, minimalist styling and metal finish, the V3 looks just as beautiful as it performs. The real difference is in the details. See who’s calling, in color, without opening your phone — the large internal display is complemented by an impressive external display. The precision-cut metal keypad reacts to the lightest of touches. And the features you can’t always see are equally impressive, like quad-band GSM — for global calls where GSM network coverage and roaming agreements are present.Thin is definitely in.
The Yanko Zero camera looks like what happens when a Motorola Razr mates with a camera. Essentially the idea is that the LCD screen is hinged to fold over the lens, protecting both the camera lens and the LCD screen when the camera is put away. Interesting idea. It’ll be even more interesting if someone decides to actually build one, and put it into production.

Motorola RAZR V8 Luxury Edition is a motorola razor cell phone. It is made in the form of clamshell and is a combination between gold’s luxury and snake skin. The unique aspect of the RAZR V 8 Luxury Edition is the result of the laser engraving on the front of the phone and on the keypad, gilded elements of the body with 24 carats gold. The navigation key is also engraved with 18 carats gold and the rear of the phone is covered with a material that reminds us that this phone has in its construction some snake skin.
<-300×250 Medium Rectangle – center->
Front of the phone is embellished by laser engraving encompassing the external display of 2 inch TFT type that is capable of reflecting 262 thousand colors. The engraving has a slightly down-looking horizontal waves that recall about the sea waves and the sea breeze. Above the screen is a 2 Mega Pixels camera with 8x digital zoom and capable of recording video (MPEG-4, 15 frames per second). Between the camera and the display, the company logo is also etched with circular lines. In the left part, just above the logo is also a battery charging indicator, that has a green color and the form of an electric shock. An interesting fact is that the pointer is impossible to see under the engraving. It becomes visible only when connecting the charger, when the indicator begin to alternate.

The closed form RAZR V8 Luxury Edition phone looks very interesting. It is a combination between glossy black color with bright warm aura of lower key that is gilded with gold and the connecting mechanism of the two halves equally gilt with gold, so you could enjoy your own reflection. The mid-back is visible even if you look at the phone perpendicular from the top, because the bottom is tilted and comes after the half top of the contour.

Above the 2.2 inches TFT type screen capable of reflecting 262 thousand colors, is the second logo of Motorola. At the first sight this is the only element that distinguishes of the completely black background of this part of the phone. But once you start the phone, its screen is ennobled in gold color – the color theme that is standard V8 Luxury Edition RAZR phone that has a simple name:”Golden”. The device is embellished with gold even here.

On the side walls of the Motorola RAZR V8 Luxury Edition is engraved a very fine logo of which details can not be seen with the naked eye. Viewing through a magnifier, etching can be noted that some elements of the logo are small diamonds, the number of which can only be guessed.

On the top left side are located volume control buttons, which can be used to change the ring profile, or to open and close the phone. Alongside are the key for confirming the chosen style, the hey for turning on the digital camera, and on a long press this locks or unlocks the external keys. The buttons have the parallelogram shape and also are adorned with a circular gradient engraving. At the bottom is the USB slot, charger and headphone slot.

In the upper right corner is integrated a buttonhole for the braid, which is also included in the set. Below is situated a elongated key that is engraved with the traditional to V8, a circular ornament. Its function is to start the voice dialing system of the contacts. This button as it is logically, doesn’t work when the phone is closed.

The gloss and the glimmer of the front of the phone is contrasting to the matte rear of the device, coated with a material like the skin of a snake. If you deepen your look on this phone, it may be noted that the symbol is very similar with the real one – it does not contain repeated elements. Upper region were we find the third in number company logo, is the battery cover. At the bottom, somewhere in the middle is the speaker opening.

Just as at other models of the RAZR series, keypad Motorola RAZR2 V8 Luxury Edition phone is made of a full plate. On a black background, gold color symbols simply looks perfect and is also in harmony with the gilded elements of the phone. Illumination is also very good – a warm and calm light but firm, fills uniform all the functional elements of the keyboard.

Motorola RAZR2 V8 Luxury Edition is equipped with a Li-ion battery with a capacity of 770 mAh. In the talking time the phone can work between 250 and 450 minutes. In standby, the phone RAZR2 V8 Luxury Edition can work between 200 and 300 hours. In motorola razor cell phone set is included an USB cable, wired stereo headphones and two chargers for the phone and for the Bluetooth device.

Starting even with the first member of the RAZR series, the V3 model, Motorola wanted to create a stylish and select phone. First, this effect was reached at that time, but then the V3 phone turned in to a ordinary phone. Motorola RAZR2 V8 had the mission to revive the reputation of this series and was equipped with two large screens, with a metal casing that is very qualitative, which measures only 11.9 mm, which is indeed an achievement is we think about the clamshell format, with a functionality quite diverse and not least with the Crystal Talk technology that substantial improved the quality of the voice, during a phone call.

However, the RAZR2 was not a revolutionary model like the V3 was, so Motorola launched the Motorola RAZR2 V8 Luxury Edition for those who really appreciate luxury. This luxury model inherited all the “simple” qualities and added the style and class to highlight it in the large crowed of the mobile phones. By the standard rich set and by its very rich design, Motorola RAZR2 V8 Luxury Edition has managed to attract so many looks without taking into account some minor shortcoming as poor quality digital camera, the menu that is less clear of the fact that it has no radio.

If you live near Omaha, Neb., you can march up to the EcoATM at the Nebraska Furniture Mart, toss it in, and automatically get an in-store trade-up coupon or gift card.

The self-serve e-cycling station electronically inspects phones, assigns them real-time secondary market value, and provides in-store payment--if the handset still has any monetary worth. If not, consumers can choose to assign the device to the recycle bin, and then it's on its way to getting recycled or refurbished.

The kiosk at the Omaha store is the first such station to be installed by San Diego-based start-up EcoATM, and it's serving as a test case in advance of a scheduled larger rollout.

The company, formerly called ReMobile, declared the Nebraska machine an immediate success when it went into operation September 21--both in the number of recycled devices collected and the trade-up purchases.

On its first day, 23 phones went into the recycle bin. In addition, "the EcoATM at NFM bought back over $100 in phones on day two, including a perfect BlackBerry Curve," Twittered EcoATM's Eric Rosser, who said in an interview he thinks retailers will appreciate the automation of the EcoATM and consumers will value the speed and convenience.

The company plans to install kiosks at wireless stores and big-box retailers in San Diego, Texas, Washington state, and Vermont this quarter, Rosser said, with a "massive rollout" set for the second quarter of next year. Eventually the EcoATMs should be able to recognize other gadgets, such as MP3 players, digital cameras, notebooks, printers, and storage devices.

The machines rely on a camera-based system to detect signs of wear such as cracked screens, missing keys, and scuff marks, and to determine a device's approximate value. If it's not worth anything, consumers could still get a free gift for their efforts--in Omaha's case, a waterproof phone case. And in a green nod, EcoATM will plant a tree for them.

The Casio Exilim is one of the most expensive Verizon phones available at $279 with a 2-year agreement. Only the HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro cost more. Not only that, the Exilim is loaded with a dated OS and is rather bulky. The only selling point that this phone has is the 5.1MP camera, so that’s what I spent most of my time testing.

I pitted the 5.1MP Casio Exilim against a 3.2MP BlackBerry Storm and 6.1MP Nikon D40. I would have to say that I’m impressed with the quality. It’s better than the Storm and almost on par with the D40 in some of the photos. Check out the pics below to see what I mean. (note: these have been resized using Picasa)

The camera has all the features we have came to expect from digital cameras these days: scene modes, flash, 9 point AF, Image stabilizer, and even a 3x optical zoom. I don’t know if I would use it as my primary camera, but it’s a mighty big upgrade for those that already use their Motorola RAZR as such.

The 9 point AF works well and does help get a better photo. There isn’t much lag from when the shutter button is pressed until it takes the photo. The flash is almost too bright, I would have to say though. But in all, the camera is almost good enough for most cases.

Hardware
The Exilim meets Military Specifications for durability, but you wouldn’t know that by just looking at it. In fact, I don’t know if I would test that certification as it doesn’t feel that solid. The only hint that it’s durable is the battery lock. The rest of the phone is your standard grade plastic.

The screen isn’t anything to rave about but it gets the job done. It’s bright enough to use in direct sunlight, which is a good thing when taking pictures. The screen rotates around for a more natural camera feel.

Operating System
What we have here is one of the most disappointing aspects of the phone. The Exilim is loaded with your standard Verizon-issue OS. I’ll have to say that it’s at least snappy and can even display some fancy animated backgrounds. To me this OS does a huge disservice to great camera phone, but some people might be satisfied with the standard OS.

Quick story: At a recent event with some of my wife’s distant family members, a couple of her cousins were ragging on an Aunt as she fumbled with her presumably new BlackBerry. These early 30 year olds kept asking her why she she uses a BlackBerry and advised that she should just get a “normal phone like everyone else”. These folks aren’t exactly…ummm…educated, so let’s not forget that there are still people out there that want need a simple OS like the one this phone uses.

What’s in the box
Remember the days when phones actually use to come with accessories? The Exilim actually comes with some stuff. Included in the box is a charging dock, cables, photo software, a lanyard, and a dumb 3.5mm adapter that’s required to use any 3.5mm headset. Greg hates those things.

Conclusion
There is a market for a high quality, simple camera phone. However, I don’t know if that market will pay $279 for such a device. Certainly some of the people that rely on their phone’s camera for special occasions like birthdays and Bar Mitzvahs will probably pony up the cash. The Exilim takes good enough pictures that it could very well be the primary camera for that lot. The rest of us will buy an iPhone or BlackBerry Tour, phones which cost less up front and take decent impromptu photos, and then rely on a standard camera for real photo-taking.
