DIY: Teflon mouse pad for optical mice

Posted by on Friday, 5 February, 2010

Here’s a pretty easy DIY project, for someone so inclined. I’ll be honest, after checking around a bit on the price of commercial teflon mouse pads, I’m not sure why you’d want to take the time to make one. Essentially the project is this: take a teflon surface like a cookie sheet, baking pan, or skillet, and then modify it to the right size, and then finish the edges so you don’t injure yourself.

The part that I have trouble with is the price. Searching around on the web, I found teflon coated mouse pads for under $25. The price of the two burned griddle that the creator of this project purchased was $25. He then took the time to cut the metal, file it down, and then sand it to a fine polish. To me, well.. my time is worth more then satisfaction of knowing that I made my own mouse pad. If you want instructions on how to do this project, click here.

Real-world versions of Web sites can be pretty nifty, and the Twitter and Facebook mouse pads from the Meninos studio are no exception. Both feature a large, fill-in status box, just like you’d find on each of the sites, although in each case the wording has …

sleeve

File this one under “Ideas, Good” and wonder why is hasn’t been done before. Actually it may very-well have been done before but just in case it hasn’t, here’s a padded laptop sleeve that, when opened, provides a nice big mouse pad.

It’s presumably got some sort of hard-ish surface to provide a nice platform for your favorite human interface device. This one’s only available in Korea but perhaps some enterprising laptop sleeve think tank here in the US may take notice. Or maybe an enterprising importer.

The sleeve comes from Artmu and is available in black, pink, and red, and in 10-, 13-, and 15-inch sizes for the equivalent of around $15, $17.50, and $20, respectively.

Retractable mouse pads aren’t selling well

mousepadThe Boynq Pad2Go Retractable Mouse Pad has just been deeply discounted at Radio Shack. It’s now $3.99, down from $19.99.

The Pad2Go is billed as “the ideal travel mousepad that can be stored in any type of luggage.” Know what other type of mousepad can be easily stored in luggage? Any regular mousepad.

It probably doesn’t help that the product shot shows a somewhat crinkled mousing surface. Because there’s nothing better than sliding your mouse over across a tiny, lumpy windowshade.
