Let’s just face it — anytime some new start-up comes along and tries to innovate around the idea of music, it is hit by some roadblocks. Latest one to realize that – Turntable.fm. The social music discovery service is now unavailable to International visitors and is now restricted to just the US residents. In a tweet this morning, the company shared the news with its followers.

It is a shame considering Turntable.fm was just beginning to blow up and ushering in a new era of music consumption. In a few weeks, Turntable.fm (formerly Stickybits) had attracted 140,000 members and was being actively pursued by investors. Many were skeptical of the legality of the service and the current actions are only going to increase investor skepticism.

Being supremely addicted to Turntable.fm, I hope this little startup finds a way to first survive and then thrive, because it has a lot of potential. Olga Nunes, a San Francisco-based musician used Turntable.fm to get traction and push sales of her music. I think this is the read potential of Turntable.fm — artists and fans, all in one room, driving sales. Say what Lady Gaga???

What is Turntable.fm? Here is what I wrote in a previous post.

Turntable.fm is a New York City-based social music listening and discovery service that is spreading on the web like wildfire. The idea behind the service is pretty simple: You sign-up by using your Facebook credentials, create a music listening room and invite people to come join you in the room. You can create a playlist by selecting songs from the service or upload your tracks. Others can join, and become co-deejays.

If you don’t want to deejay, you can skip from one room to another based on musical interests. You can chat with others and share your playlists. You even get your own avatar that bobs to music. The whole experience is not just about music. It’s about finding others who enjoy music and forming relationships with them — albeit transient ones.

Many of today’s bands have been influenced one time or another by Pink Floyd, after all, they are arguably the first progressive rock band ever. However, not being too commercial, there are some who get them while others don’t. It took myself 3 listens before I got The Dark Side Of The Moon! That being said, I am now a fan. In my never ending quest to find Pink Floyd merch, I chanced upon an awesome site that caters to true fans of Pink Floyd. For all music fans actually. From Pink Floyd merch to Kiss merch to Sum-41 merch, planet13.com.au delivers the goods.

4 Cool Music Desktop Gadgets For Vista and Windows 7

There is a list of some cool music desktop gadgets for Vista and Windows 7. Music fans who use Vista and Windows 7, enjoy it now!

iTunes Accessory Gadget

This cool gadget allows you to control playback of tracks and other settings in iTunes without having to open up the entire iTunes application.

Media Player Gadget

This ties into your Windows Media Player library and allows you to easily search it. It also will display album artwork, track information, and give you visualizations when playing a song. It is a lot easier to navigate than opening the full WMP application.

iClassical Radio Player

For fans of classical music this gadget lets you stream classical music from a variety of online classical stations. The only controls are stop and play but being able to select from a wide variety of stations on your desktop make this a excellent app for the classical music connoisseur.

ChroniX MetalRadio

If you’re a fan of heavy metal, one of the coolest online metal stations is ChroniX Radio. This handy gadget lets you stream and control playback of their three channels–Aggression, Metal, and Grit–where each has a different flavor of hard rock and metal.

Those music gardgets just can be used in Vista and Windows 7. Of course you can use all of them at the same time and choose one you like best.

The musicians that are the subject of Bullet for My Valentine merch and albums are almost the anti thesis of rock stars. Unlike other musically inclined stars, the members of this band prefer to focus on their music instead of reinventing their appearances for commercial packaging. This in itself suggests that the group makes for an interesting case study.

The founding band members hail from the UK but were originally known under the moniker Jeff Killed John. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Matthew Tuck; lead guitarist Michael Paget; drummer Michael Thomas and bassist Nick Crandle came together in 1998 and, at the outset, began playing nu metal music. In 2002, the group released the EP You Play With Me. Before the release Crandle left and Jason James took over bass and backup vocals.

Because of problems with finances, the band had to adopt its current name. At the time that they did this, a more crucial shift happened for them as they changed labels and music genre. They released two new EPs under Sony BMG. It didn’t take long before the first Bullet for My Valentine album, Poison, emerged. This came out in 2005 and hit the Billboard 200 at 128. One year after its release, it achieved gold status and continues to be a hit among fans to this day. Clearly the group had found a permanent name for its band patches.

There isn’t much to debate over when it comes to defining the group’s genre. For critics and some music fans, they fit nicely under the banner of metalcore or heavy and thrash metal. This however is not how the band perceives their music. They prefer to be categorized under rock but with metal infusions. They regard Metallica and Iron Maiden as among their major influences.

In January 2008, the band went on to release their second album, Scream Aim Fire. The album is still within the same category as its predecessor but band members consider it more belligerent in tone. A brief relapse into the style and tone of the first album cam about with the release of Fever, the group’s third album. But of course, there were no gradual beats to replace the aggressive stance. Fever is most likely a sign of musical maturity because, of the three albums, this one has more in store when it comes to the question of musical legacy.

Despite seemingly veering away from image building, the group has not gone unnoticed. In 2004, they were hailed as the Best Newcomer at the Welsh Music Awards. They were then named Best British Band in 2006 at the Metal Hammer Golden God Award. The Kerrang! Awards has added to their string of recognitions, naming the group Best British Newcomer in 2005 and Best British Band in 2008 and 2009. The single Tears Don’t Fall was awarded by Kerrang! As the Best UK Single in 2006.

Fans and followers can have different ideas on which genre the Bullet for My Valentine albums belong. Clearly though, this isn’t a major life and death concern for the members of the band. They really are more into playing their music than anything else.

Hear and Now: “Dismal failure” may be the kindest way to describe quad. To music fans for whom even cassette tapes are a quaint throwback, here’s a real obscurity: Quadraphonic sound systems were an experiment launched in 1970. Music came out of four speakers spread around the room–guitars over there, vocals over here, drums all around. In a perfect world, the listener would hear what it was …

There’s no question that the 1990s gave us one of the most popular rock and roll bands in history. It was in this decade that we first heard of the music of the would be legend, Pearl Jam. Thanks to the band member’s outstanding talent and artistry, their popularity and music merch sales haven’t dimmed. This is despite the fact that they have made controversial stands in relation to social and political issues.

Fortunately, the band has attained legendary status amongst its fans and music lovers. Today, the current band members, Eddie Vedder on lead vocals and guitar, Jeff Ament on bass guitar, Stone Gossard on rhythm guitar, Mike McCready on lead guitar and Matt Cameron on drums, continue to make music that millions still jam to.

Discography Worth Jamming To

While other artists from the 90s have paled, Pearl Jam continues to shine. This is only natural considering that the band has been able to sell a whooping 60 million albums around the world. One secret to the enduring quality of the band’s music is the wide scope that song themes revolve around. People from all walks of life can relate to the music.

At present, Pearl Jam has 9 studio albums, 2 compilation albums and 6 live albums with 28 singles and several official bootlegs to its name. It must be noted that the number does not include numerous collaborations with other bands like Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, and Temple of the Dog, to name a few.

The nine studio albums span two decades, Ten in 1991, Vs in 1993, Vitalogy in 1994, No Code in 1996, Yield in 1998, Binaural in 2000 Riot Act in 2002, Pearl Jam in 2006 and Backspacer in 2009.

Band Influence and Legacy

Like every other successful band, a distinctive quality marks the music of Pearl Jam. Nonetheless, music fans can still reasonably expect surprisingly new developments from the band. In general, Pearl Jam belongs to the genres of classic and punk rock. The group however has never been known to rigidly stick to the labels that accompany their reputation.

A music analyst can clearly see the mix of approaches from the albums. Ten began mainly as alternative rock music but Vitalogy continued as punk rock. No Code moved on to garage rock and was followed by rock and roll Yield and art rock Binaural. Riot Act continued with elements of the general rock genre. Pearl Jam finally made the return home to alternative rock but Backspacer introduced a wholly different side to Pearl Jam when it infused pop and new wave influences.

Because of the band’s variety of music quality, the band’s influence also encompasses bands from different genres. Bands that reflect Pearl Jam’s work include alternative band Silverchair, rock band The Strokes and post grunge band Puddle of Mud. More bands influenced by the group are perhaps currently in the works.

The great thing about the group is that its members are more than just rock musicians. They are also highly involved members of society. Eddie Vedder in particular has openly used his popularity as leverage when speaking out about such concerns as wildlife protection, Chrohn’s disease and voter registration.

With all that Pearl Jam has been up to, it’s clear that they have proven that rock performers are not all self-centered or concerned only about fame. This is what makes the band special and worthy of putting on a pedestal or at least on hundreds of band posters.

The search for popular acoustic guitar songs begins when you realize that you have bought some experience on your guitar, and you have realized that your fave songs don’t fill as much time as you believed they would. So as an acoustic guitar player you are going to need a repertoire.

When I think of popular acoustic songs, I cannot help thinking of Peter, Paul And Mary. No, not the biblical ones, the folks group from the sixties. At that time in America and Britain there had been an interest on the part of the younger generation in the folkmusic of their own countries. One of the few groups to cash in on the people boom to any great extent was Peter, Paul And Mary.

Peter, Paul And Mary helped Bob Dylan become the legend that heis by making his songs accessible to the wider music-loving public. Those who didn’t find a nasal whine romantic or, indeed enticing in any way. So here’s a course in getting together a repertoire of well-liked acoustic guitar songs : your presentation is supreme.

Bob Dylan wrote the songs. He had the feelings that connected with a generation of irritated and discontented younger people. But Peter, Paul And Mary brought the composer and the audience together. So a popular song needn’t be one that folks have heard of before. It could be a song that you MAKE popular. Maybe not to an international audience, but your own bunch of pals is a start.

The Doors recorded a song called Light My Fire. It absolutely was a loud driving rock song. It was re-worked by Jose Feliciano as a Latin ballad and reached number three on the pop charts. To several music fans Jose Feliciano’s version of Light My Fire is the decisive one. Now that is a well-liked song. Eric Clapton’s acoustic version of Layla is another example of a preferred acoustic guitar song that started life as something different.
