Why is Night-Vision Colored Green?

Posted by on Monday, 8 February, 2010

Action and war movies have established that night-vision renders the darkened world as green, and this is an accurate reflection of what real military operators use. So do night-vision goggles present the world as green? Here’s the quick answer: according to Nat Geo’s Helicopter Wars, in an episode featuring the HH-60 Pave Hawk, the human eye can distinguish more shades of green than any other color.

In other words, the color green was chosen because it presents a night-vision operator with the most accurate picture possible, the most perceivable. Obviously, in situations where seeing everyone else before they see you represents the difference between life and death, this is a crucial advantage. According to keylawk.blogspot.com, our visual affinity for green is due more to our brain than our eyes:

Because the sensitivity is indifferent to whether the green is pigmentation or wave length, solid or light, it is probable that our brain, not the naked physics of the peep-hole, the optic orb, is cue-ing the green.

So, unless there are significant changes in how our brain perceives the world through our eyes, expect low-light hardware to present everything in shades of green.

Now that is a special edition

Wow. I thought Modern Warfare 2’s night vision goggles made for a pretty special edition, but this edition of Enemy Zero, a mediocre Sega Saturn game, is the specialest of them all. The crate it comes in? Not a novelty crate! It’s the smallest container they could find that would hold all the wonderful things they wanted to give you.

So what exactly is in this cornucopia of survival horror ephemera? Well, in addition to the “normal” special edition of the game, you get shirts, a promotional costume they used at shows, a replica of the gun from the game, a VHS tape of the game’s music (?!), and about 500 other things.

It was put up on Yahoo! Auctions in Japan, and sold for… are you ready for this? It was sold for 300,000¥, or around $3300. Mother of god! Even a mint copy of Radiant Silvergun will only go for a few hundred!

Cool Kids Gifts

Since the holidays are coming and you kid has been good all year round, we know you want Santa to pay him a visit. We also know that your kid is very picky when it comes to his presents and you probably don’t have that much money to spend. We are here to show you that you don’t have to spend a fortune on cool kids gifts.

For $50 you can buy a really cool gadget. The Night Vision Goggles are actually a set of binoculars that have an infrared feature which allows you to see things clearly in the dark. These goggles work with 5 AA batteries which are not included when purchasing the kit. You also get an instruction booklet so you can see how to properly handle these binoculars and then explain it to the kids. This is a toy we recommend for those aged +6. Now your kids can play with their friends (in the back yard of course, we’d never advise you to let them anywhere else when it’s dark outside) and have some real fun. In-the-dark hide and seek has never been easier and more fun. You can see up to 50 feet even when it’s completely dark. You have 2 night vision display modes and another 2 amplification modes.

If you already have a Nintendo Wii at home but your little girl has absolutely no idea how to use it or she doesn’t think it’s any fun to play those racing games that you play with your son or friends, now here is a cool gift that can put the Nintendo to use even for your little girl. Personally, I’ve watched too many “Chucky” movies to stand to be around any doll but I think it would make your daughter happy if you bought her one that really acts like a person. I know that such dolls that cry and burp and pee in the diaper have been available on the market for quite some time but this one is special because of the technology used. You can put a Wiimote into the back of the doll which was especially created for the game “Baby and me”. In the game, the kid needs to take care of the baby, feed it, swing it, play with it and so forth. The Wiimote has a speaker inside and so the baby makes all the normal noise that a real baby does.  Girls will love their new toy but we are not sure how you are going to handle babies crying all over again.

If your kid has seen too many airplane-fight movies, he has probably already bugged you several times saying “Can I get a plane too, daddy? Can I, can I, can I?!” You probably won’t buy him a real plane but you surely can spare $32 and buy him a remote control fighter jet. This little baby can actually fly at 25 km/hour so your kid will be thrilled to play with it all day (just make sure he does it in the garden before he breaks your wife’s favorite vase).  We think you are going to like this little gadget yourself so you and your son will be competing to see who makes better loops, more impressive acrobatics and who is a better pilot. You need 6 AA batteries so we recommend you invest in a battery charger as well.

$50 and the Oregon Scientific Star Wars Darth Vader Laptop is all yours for the taking. Sure, the name is long and fancy but this gadget is simpler to use than it sounds. This Star Wars laptop has 50 fun and logic games packed up for your kid. Not only is it entertaining, it is also quite educative as some games will improve his memory skills, others will train his reflexes and some will even improve the hand-eye coordination. You have a light sabre which has motion sensors and your kill will get a blast with the sound effects.  Just like the Jedi knights did it, now your son can extend his sabre with the push of a button. May the force be with you, young Skywalker!

If you are on a really low budget but still want to buy something nice for your youngster, for $15 you can purchase a digital watch with laser beam and a really cool small radio that comes even with headphones. The nice thing is you get 2 products in one package at a real small price. The sport watch has a laser built-in and it can project either a simple red light or you can choose between other 4 patterns just by turning the dial at the end of the laser. The radio has a belt clip so your kids can listen to music while walking to school or sitting on the back seat of the car and he can change the stations by pressing one simple button. The radio also has a light built into it so it will add a nice glow to his daily outfit.

As usual, we have saved our favorite for last. We are not sure if this is a gift you’re your daughter, your son, wife, and husband or whatever. Our guess is that it’s for girls since it’s pink but there is a good chance the boys will get their hands on it as well. This looks like a normal alarm clock (pink alarm clock that is). Except that it doesn’t have a cuckoo inside, it has chocolate. Every hour a little door opens up and instead of some annoying bird coming out, you get a sweet chocolate treat. Be careful, you have to grab it in 30 seconds or the door closes and the clock swallows your chocolate in again. Make sure you refill it when it’s out of chocolate but don’t put more than 30 small pieces in it. It also has a sensor that prevents it from opening at night.

We hope we have provided you with some cool kids gifts (or ideas, that is) and remember that you don’t have to spend a fortune to buy a cool gift.
