This fearsome contraption is the handiwork of a couple of amateur DEFCON-types who reckoned that any self-respecting spy plane ought to be able to impersonate cellphone towers. And that’s exactly what the Wireless Aerial Surveillance Platform does — it tricks AT&T and T-Mobile handsets into connecting to it, then re-routes the incoming calls via VOIP so they don’t drop, while simultaneously recording all conversations to 32GB of onboard storage. It can also handle a bit of WiFi snooping on the side, thanks to a Linux-based hacking toolkit and a 340 million word dictionary for guessing passwords. What’s more, the WASP apparently achieves all of this without breaking a single FCC regulation. So, er, that’s fine then. Oh yeah, and we don’t want any of that stuffed crust nonsense, you hear?

Is it over? Is it finally all over? Sony would certainly like to think so, finally bringing its PSN service back online for gamers in its home country of Japan as expected. PlayStation players throughout most of the world have been getting their Resistance on for at least a month now, US services leading the way back in May, but the Japanese government had previously asked Sony to keep things on the DL until it was doubly, triply sure all was good. Given that it only took three days after that initial re-launch for people to find another PSN exploit, that’s looking like it was the right call.

Through the last several weeks in Britain, we’ve gone through probably the roughest winter weather for many years. Possibly the worst feature of these winters is that they ar not severe enough. If my theory appears to be a bit of a nonsense, just think about it for a while. A really severe winter for us in Britain is when the temperature stays below zero centigrade.

Accordingly our problems are dual. To begin with, we simply don’t invest in infrastructure to handle real winter weather. We have very few snow ploughs and gritters, and almost no-one, including the emergency services fits winter tires. Secondly, when we do have for us frozen weather, the temperature very infrequently falls beyond a few degrees below That consequently means that the humidity levels stay rather high, and that consequently brings frozen wiper blades, windscreens, door locks and door seals on our vehicles.

I first became aware of the oddness of our winter weather when I was visiting Sweden one year at the beginning of winter. Everyone complained of being very cold, and we had all those humid winter issues with the vehicles in the mornings. But, the locals surprised and horrified me with their insistence that it would all get better as soon as the temperature fell an additional ten degrees or so. At that time, they assured me, the sea would freeze over and the moisture level would drop.

As this comes about, there’s so little humidity in the atmosphere that there’s little or no condensation to settle and then freeze on your car overnight. This means that the windshield is clear and clean, the Wiper Blades are not to the screen, the locks all work, the door seals aren’t frozen, and above all, the ignition system is nice and dry. You don’t even really need winter screen wash additive, because there’s no nasty wet spray being thrown up onto your windshield by other cars. In truth the only issue you might have is that your wiper blades, if you are using rubber ones, may be frozen solid.

So, it appears that we English are victims of our own soft climate. Once I had understood this fact, I looked into what I could do to mitigate the problem. Preparing a car for the Uk winter is nothing like the same as preparing it for a real Nordic|Arctic|Alpine|Scandinavianrarely see temperatures as low as minus eight degrees Celsius, but we will often have humid weather during the day followed by overnight frost.

For all those reasons, I always carry out the usual pre-winter checks on my car: anti-freeze, drive belts, lights, windshield and wiper blades, battery, alternator and ignition system etc. On top of that, I make sure to lubricate my car’s locks with a good water repellent lock oil, then I clean and polish the rubber door seals with silicone wax. Most “Cockpit Shine” type products are an excellent source of silicone. Use enough to leave the rubber shiny black. Remember that lots of vehicles have 2 door seals: one on the door frame and the other on the door itself.

Lastl but not least, so as to avoid the risk of wrecking my windshield wiper linkage or motor, I have permanently switched over to Silicone Wiper Blades. These stay flexible down to -60°C so they give a clean sweep in even the harshest conditions, and they don’t crack or split with the cold. Additionally, silicone is more water repellent that rubber, so it ensures a much lower risk of your wiper blades being frozen to your vehicle’s windshield. Silicone wiper blades also have superb resistance to the chemicals used in winter screen wash antifreeze, UV and Ozone, making them an excellent choice for summer use also.

I found a brand called XOPC. These are designed for Russian winters. They are very competitively priced and come with a 12 month guarantee.

The conventional opinion of replacing wiper blades is that it is a task that should be done by a buff viral young man with a liking for all things car related. This of course in nonsense, woman have had the vote for quite a while now and also with this new found financial freedom have the opportunity to take care of their own automobiles no matter how lame and girly they might be. In fact taking charge of your own destiny is quite a easy matter yet very life affirming to anyone who dares giving it a try. So if you are a lonely spinster, divorcee, the wrong side of 30, the ugly friend or just a frigid cold fish, do not despair you too have the power to swap your wiper blades without requiring to shacking up with a mono browed Neanderthal in order to keep your car. Just because you can’t aquire a man into your life isn’t really that big of a deal in fact the thing most people are looking for materially is actually something which can only be found by looking within and replacing your own wiper blades, in fact, this applies to all things spiritual. Girls worship at the fake mantel of commercialism, celebrity and self seek their own identity through relationships, these people are complete losers and should be heartily mocked at the soonest time. So now that we’ve found out you and I are both super cool people lets start with replacing those pesky wiper blades without breaking a sweat or a finger nail. If your wiper blades a shaking this is a good indication that they may need replacing, you see as wiper blades age the rubber becomes more and more broken and this process bends the wiper blade to the point where it no longer hugs close to the wind screen.

This process is occurring all the time in summer the heat melts the rubber windscreen wipers and alters their structure, in the winter the rubber freezes and fissures again causing massive mechanical damage in the process. If your windscreen wipers leaves streaky marks this is another indication that your windscreen wipers needs replacing and is also caused by cracks and a badly fitting shape. Most people dictate replacing your windscreen wipers at least once every six months and I totally agree.

The first time you do anything can be a frustrating experience fortunately this info is here to save the day. Wash your windscreen once before you begin in order to cleanse all the dirt and grease and hence prevent your new replacement wiper blades from becoming contaminated. For this job you may need a flat head screw driver and nerves of steel. Ensure your car is parked and on a level surface off route from other traffic which may slam into you and kill you dead. Take a good tight grip on that wind screen replacement wiper blades arm and give it a good tug upwards and outwards. The replacement wiper blades should now be in a ideal position for you to untighten the old replacement wiper blades with the screw driver and change the new one, just like that.

We've written about the Viper SmartStart system before. It's the $30-per-year iPhone/BlackBerry app that, when paired with a $500 component in your car, ensures that you never have to worry about strenuous nonsense like turning a key to start your car or unlock your doors ever again.

Up until this point, its been a one way deal. You can tell your car to turn on and fire up the AC, or use your alarm to scare the hell out of people in parking lots miles away - but what if your car wanted to talk back to you?

Now it can!

Well now this is mildly embarrassing. Six years ago, Bungie showed off, and I guess I use that term loosely now, Halo 2 for the very first time. Let’s see… 2003, that would make me 17. Trivia! Anyhow, what Bungie showed was a complete hunk of nonsense. This is where you act surprised.

The game’s engineering lead, Chris Butcher, told not-CrunchGear that what Bungie showed that day was “smoke and mirrors.” That doesn’t mean it was done to purposefully mislead E3 attendees, and the larger gaming audience, but because that’s just how they rolled at the time, creating an engine that they didn’t know the Xbox couldn’t handle.

A case of biting off more than they could chew, as it were.

Not that Halo 2 turned out bad. We played it for hours and hours back in college, like a bunch of geeks. I was a sniper most of the time, and everybody hated my MAD ELITE SKILLZ. Then I’d cackle like a fool.

Hopefully I’ve succeeded in my goal of killing a few minutes of your day.

Anyway, gamers in Australia have been unable to play Settlers 7, which uses that silly DRM nonsense that requires you be to constantly connected to the Internet, because Ubisoft’s servers have been unreachable. Who saw this coming? Oh, right: everyone but the Ubisoft executives in Paris. /Le sigh.

Ubisoft did offer this bit of helpful advice:

Apparently this problem is especially common in Australia – we will try to get to the bottom of this

That message went up on Thursday of last week, and Aussie gamers are still having issues.

Plainly, this is what happens with this kind of DRM regime. You cannot expect a system to work if it requires the Internet’s terrible infrastructure to always work all the time.

I don’t know, there has to be some sort of compromise between this Ubisoft DRM regime (INSANITY) versus no rules whatsoever (ANARCHY), something us PC gamers could at least live with.

Something Steam-like, if you will.

So what to make of this latest Call of Duty rumor? The seventh game in the series will be named Call of Duty: Black Ops, and will take place between the end of World War II and the present day. It won’t necessarily “be” a Vietnam War game, but will have missions that take place all over the world. Remember: it’s being developed by Treyarch (i.e. not Infinity Ward), the same dudes who developed Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War.

That’s what the latest rumors suggest, with various Web sites citing “undisclosed sources at Activision.” In truth, you might as well talk to a cup of water, but what are you gonna do?

Setting the game exclusively in Vietnam would have been tricky. You’ll recall all the nonsense surround the release of Battlefield: Vietnam. THIS GAME IS ANTI-AMERICAN, an so on. Great soundtrack, though.

Oh, and good news for PC gamers: dedicated servers may be coming back. Victoire!

I thought the whole point of “black ops” was that they were black? Now we’re making a video game about them? Madness. Yes, this sentence is supposed to be small.
