Surface SDK gets input simulator, opens doors to indie devs

Microsoft Surface Input Simulator

There’s one big, table-shaped obstacle to developing apps for Microsoft’s Surface: you kind of have to own one. A new Surface 2 SDK, landing this summer, will sidestep that problem with an input simulator so devs can test their code on any Windows 7 PC. You can tap fingers, place tags, or paint “blobs” for your virtual SUR 40 to interact with, and even fake multitouch gestures by “stamping” a finger in one spot then moving a second one. If the Surface you’re programming for happens to be movable (though we’re not sure who would put a ,600 computer on hinges) you can also alter the tilt of the display to trigger UI changes. You’ll still need access to one of these behemoths to make sure your wares work in the really real world, but at least the preliminary work can be done on any old laptop or desktop. Frankly, this is something we’d have thought would be included from day one — as they say, better late than never.

Should You Purchase Laptops That Have Been Renovated?

Posted by on Saturday, 1 May, 2010

If you are contemplating of purchasing a laptop but are being deterred by budget constraints, there is a solution. How about buying a used laptop or a refurbished laptop? There are no two ways about the fact that a new laptop if the best option for those who have the means. The main aim of buying pre-owned products is saving money. However, this objective cannot be achieved if the buyer is unable make an informed purchase. Regardless of the amount of money you are parting with, it is essential that the product you are getting is worth the price you are paying for it. If the price is not justified, you are in for a poor bargain and your decision to buy an old laptop may be wrong.

In order to make a wise and judicious purchase, there are a number of things you will need to know. First, ensure that you do a proper research. It involves researching which laptops are on the market and the availability. Compare and contrast one product against another in order to pick the best ones. The Internet can be of great help, as there are several portals that have provision for comparison. Pick the stores that you think will offer you the best laptops at competitive prices. It is a good idea to buy refurbished pre-owned laptops from their original manufacturers.

Refurbished models come with a big competitive edge, especially so if you are making a direct purchase from the manufacturer. When a unit is sent for refurbishing, each component is tested separately and verified for proper performance. Non-conformity to set standards of performance entails the part to be replaced. This procedure leads to a laptop unit that performs as good as new. However, this does not mean that the manufacturer can sell the unit for the cost of a new laptop. Instead, he will need to offer a big discount on the laptop. The fact that the emptor is gaining from the deal goes without saying.

What are the features that you must check before purchasing the used product? There are several aspects of the laptop that you need to scrutinize before finalizing the deal. Check the memory size, the size of the hard disk, the speed and type of the processor, the drives that are available with the unit, wireless options, etc. You must also find out the manufacturing date. If the laptop is extremely old, it may be too outdated for you to use, thereby making your purchase a waste.

There are two more essential features that you must assess prior to the purchase of the old laptop. The main advantage of a laptop is its mobility. There are two features which we are referring to affect the mobility of the laptop. The first is its weight and the second is its battery condition. Ensure that the weight of the laptop is suitable for you to move around with and manage. A weighty laptop may prove to be a burden. When you are on the move, it is important that the battery offers a backup that will sustain the laptop throughout the trip. Hence, ensure that the battery is in sound condition.

After you have selected the pre-owned laptop you want to buy, ensure that all the accessories, peripherals and warranty are in place. Also, ensure that you are being given the laptop you actually picked. With a little care, you will be able to purchase an old laptop that can provide service for many years.

The iPad: Apple’s Trojan Horse

Posted by on Thursday, 1 April, 2010

Something struck me about Apple’s handling of the iPad launch this week. Instead of countless nerds spouting off in early reviews, only a few major tech press folks got early samples. Instead, the iPad showed up in a show the missus and I watch, Modern Family.*

That’s right: instead of an overfed talking-head tech reporter pawing over the iPad on morning TV, the iPad got prime-time coverage in a sitcom. Think about the last computer company to get that kind of screen time. Only Microsoft, in their abysmal product placement in Family Guy comes to mind. But in Modern Family the iPad was a major plot point. While I’m sure Apple paid a pretty penny for the exposure, I don’t doubt the folks at ABC would have put the product in for free had Apple asked.

But this shows a very important turning point in Apple marketing. The company, in short, sees the iPad as a mass market phenomenon without peer and is treating it as such. And the iPad, in turn, will become the tool that pushes Apple even deeper into the home.

The iPhone convinced millions of people that Apple makes nice phones. The iPad, in turn, will convince millions of people that Apple makes nice computers. Whereas the “halo effect” that the iPhone was supposed to have on the rest of Apple’s wares – laptops and iMacs and the line – isn’t quite apparent except in Apple’s impressive revenues, I suspect the iPad is going to push people over the hump. While you can get away with booting up craggy old Windows on your craggy old Dell while mucking about in iPhone’s sylvan glades, you’re less likely to appreciate your old laptop when its sitting alongside a device that looks like a cross between a robotic communion wafer and something out of Star Trek.

To describe this metaphorically, (and this is a horrible metaphor) think of the iPhone as a bicycle made by BMW. No one is going to upgrade to a Ford car if you’re only used to their bikes but if Ford starts to sell, say, something like an inexpensive Smart car or nice motorcycle with a little more power and all that BMW “magic,” there’s a good chance they’ll buy a Z-Series next time they’re looking at cars.

So the reason you’re not seeing geeks like us with iPads this week is simple – the iPad isn’t for geeks like us. While time will tell if this is a correct assessment, I’m almost betting on it.

UPDATE – I found some things to add. First, Apple has 91% market share in “premium PCs,” which is huge. But in lower-end PCs Windows still rules. Now what happens when a sub-$700 Apple ends up in millions of homes. Much more market share and a real halo effect across the market.

*It’s seriously a really good program. Christopher LLoyd (Frasier and Wings) produces it. I thought it would be dumb at first too. Try it.
