There’s one big, table-shaped obstacle to developing apps for Microsoft’s Surface: you kind of have to own one. A new Surface 2 SDK, landing this summer, will sidestep that problem with an input simulator so devs can test their code on any Windows 7 PC. You can tap fingers, place tags, or paint “blobs” for your virtual SUR 40 to interact with, and even fake multitouch gestures by “stamping” a finger in one spot then moving a second one. If the Surface you’re programming for happens to be movable (though we’re not sure who would put a ,600 computer on hinges) you can also alter the tilt of the display to trigger UI changes. You’ll still need access to one of these behemoths to make sure your wares work in the really real world, but at least the preliminary work can be done on any old laptop or desktop. Frankly, this is something we’d have thought would be included from day one — as they say, better late than never.

If you are contemplating of purchasing a laptop but are being deterred by budget constraints, there is a solution. How about buying a used laptop or a refurbished laptop? There are no two ways about the fact that a new laptop if the best option for those who have the means. The main aim of buying pre-owned products is saving money. However, this objective cannot be achieved if the buyer is unable make an informed purchase. Regardless of the amount of money you are parting with, it is essential that the product you are getting is worth the price you are paying for it. If the price is not justified, you are in for a poor bargain and your decision to buy an old laptop may be wrong.

In order to make a wise and judicious purchase, there are a number of things you will need to know. First, ensure that you do a proper research. It involves researching which laptops are on the market and the availability. Compare and contrast one product against another in order to pick the best ones. The Internet can be of great help, as there are several portals that have provision for comparison. Pick the stores that you think will offer you the best laptops at competitive prices. It is a good idea to buy refurbished pre-owned laptops from their original manufacturers.

Refurbished models come with a big competitive edge, especially so if you are making a direct purchase from the manufacturer. When a unit is sent for refurbishing, each component is tested separately and verified for proper performance. Non-conformity to set standards of performance entails the part to be replaced. This procedure leads to a laptop unit that performs as good as new. However, this does not mean that the manufacturer can sell the unit for the cost of a new laptop. Instead, he will need to offer a big discount on the laptop. The fact that the emptor is gaining from the deal goes without saying.

What are the features that you must check before purchasing the used product? There are several aspects of the laptop that you need to scrutinize before finalizing the deal. Check the memory size, the size of the hard disk, the speed and type of the processor, the drives that are available with the unit, wireless options, etc. You must also find out the manufacturing date. If the laptop is extremely old, it may be too outdated for you to use, thereby making your purchase a waste.

There are two more essential features that you must assess prior to the purchase of the old laptop. The main advantage of a laptop is its mobility. There are two features which we are referring to affect the mobility of the laptop. The first is its weight and the second is its battery condition. Ensure that the weight of the laptop is suitable for you to move around with and manage. A weighty laptop may prove to be a burden. When you are on the move, it is important that the battery offers a backup that will sustain the laptop throughout the trip. Hence, ensure that the battery is in sound condition.

After you have selected the pre-owned laptop you want to buy, ensure that all the accessories, peripherals and warranty are in place. Also, ensure that you are being given the laptop you actually picked. With a little care, you will be able to purchase an old laptop that can provide service for many years.

Instead of countless nerds spouting off in early reviews, only a few major tech press folks got early samples. Instead, the iPad showed up in a show the missus and I watch, Modern Family.*

That’s right: instead of an overfed talking-head tech reporter pawing over the iPad on morning TV, the iPad got prime-time coverage in a sitcom. Think about the last computer company to get that kind of screen time. Only Microsoft, in their abysmal product placement in Family Guy comes to mind. But in Modern Family the iPad was a major plot point. While I’m sure Apple paid a pretty penny for the exposure, I don’t doubt the folks at ABC would have put the product in for free had Apple asked.

But this shows a very important turning point in Apple marketing. The company, in short, sees the iPad as a mass market phenomenon without peer and is treating it as such. And the iPad, in turn, will become the tool that pushes Apple even deeper into the home.

The iPhone convinced millions of people that Apple makes nice phones. The iPad, in turn, will convince millions of people that Apple makes nice computers. Whereas the “halo effect” that the iPhone was supposed to have on the rest of Apple’s wares – laptops and iMacs and the line – isn’t quite apparent except in Apple’s impressive revenues, I suspect the iPad is going to push people over the hump. While you can get away with booting up craggy old Windows on your craggy old Dell while mucking about in iPhone’s sylvan glades, you’re less likely to appreciate your old laptop when its sitting alongside a device that looks like a cross between a robotic communion wafer and something out of Star Trek.

To describe this metaphorically, (and this is a horrible metaphor) think of the iPhone as a bicycle made by BMW. No one is going to upgrade to a Ford car if you’re only used to their bikes but if Ford starts to sell, say, something like an inexpensive Smart car or nice motorcycle with a little more power and all that BMW “magic,” there’s a good chance they’ll buy a Z-Series next time they’re looking at cars.

So the reason you’re not seeing geeks like us with iPads this week is simple – the iPad isn’t for geeks like us. While time will tell if this is a correct assessment, I’m almost betting on it.

UPDATE – I found some things to add. First, Apple has 91% market share in “premium PCs,” which is huge. But in lower-end PCs Windows still rules. Now what happens when a sub-$700 Apple ends up in millions of homes. Much more market share and a real halo effect across the market.

*It’s seriously a really good program. Christopher LLoyd (Frasier and Wings) produces it. I thought it would be dumb at first too. Try it.

There are some times that you should install a new free cell phone tracker, when the old laptop cell phone tracker broken. It’s relatively easy even for inexperienced users. In this article, I’ll replace a damaged HP laptop cell phone tracker with a fresh new one. I mentioned HP Pavilion DV5000 laptop because it has the same body and the cell phone tracker replacement instructions need to be identical for both models. Before you start, remember to turn off the power, remove the laptop battery and remove the laptop AC adapter. Open up the display as far as it goes. Insert a small flat head screwdriver between the cell phone tracker cover and laptop base and lift up the cover carefully. Keep on removing the cover with your fingers.

Remove two screws securing the free cell GPS tracker software . Carefully lift up the HP laptop cell phone tracker from the base and move it up so you are able to access the cell phone tracker cable. The cell phone tracker is connected to the motherboard via a flat ribbon cable. Before you are able to release the cable and remove the laptop cell phone tracker, the connector must be unlocked. Be very careful. The cell phone tracker connector is permanently attached to the motherboard. If you accidentally damage the connector, you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.

On the following you see the connector in the locked state. The connector opens up just like a door. You are able to open the connector with your fingernail. On the picture below you will see the same connector in the unlocked position. Now you can pull the cable from the connector and remove the cell phone tracker . Replace the damaged cell phone tracker with a fresh new one.

Cell phone tracker Description: Color: Black Status: Genuine and new! Remark: Ribbon cable included Porduct Warranty6 months warranty For return of non-defective product within the first 10 days from date of purchase, full refund.

If you are contemplating of purchasing a laptop but are being deterred by budget constraints, there is a solution. How about buying a used laptop or a refurbished laptop? There is no room for doubt about the fact that a new laptop if the best choice for those who have the means. The primary aim of buying pre-owned products is to save money. However, this objective cannot be achieved if the vendee does not make an informed purchase. Regardless of the sum you are parting with, it is important that the product you are getting is worth the price you are paying for it. If this is not the case, you are in for a poor bargain and your decision to buy an old laptop may be amiss.

In order to make a wise and prudent purchase, there are a number of things you will need to know. First, see to it that you do your homework well. It will involve studying which laptops are on the market and the availability. Compare and contrast available makes in order to pick the best ones. The Internet can be very useful, as there are several websites that provide for comparison. Pick the stores that you think will offer you the best laptops at competitive prices. It is a good option to buy refurbished pre-owned laptops from the original manufacturers of the product.

Refurbished models come with a big advantage, especially so if you are purchasing directly from the manufacturer. When a unit is sent for refurbishing, each part is tested separately and verified for proper performance. Inability to meet set standards of performance causes the part to be replaced. This process leads to a laptop assemblage that performs as good as new. All the same, this does not allow the manufacturer to sell the unit for the cost of a new laptop. Rather, he will need to offer a substantive discount on the laptop. The fact that the emptor is at the advantageous end goes without saying.

What are the specifications that you must verify before purchasing the used product? There are several aspects of the laptop that you need to inspect before finalizing the deal. Check the memory size, the size of the hard disk, the speed and type of the processor, the drives that come with the unit, wireless feature, etc. You must also find out the date of manufacturing. If the laptop is very old, it may be too outmoded for your use, thereby making your purchase a worthless one.

There are two more important features that you must assess prior to the purchase of the old laptop. The primary advantage of a laptop is its mobility. There are two features which we are referring to affect the mobility of the laptop. The first is its weight and the second is the status of its battery. Check if the weight of the laptop is suitable for you to carry around and manage. A weighty laptop may be burdensome. When you are travelling, it is important that the battery offers a backup that will support the laptop throughout the trip. Hence, ensure that the battery is in sound condition.

Once you have picked out the pre-owned laptop you want to buy, check if all the accessories, peripherals and warranty are in place. Also, ensure that you are being given the laptop you actually selected. With a little caution, you will be able to buy an old laptop that can provide service for many years.

We love DIY projects here at Lifehacker. Whether we're building computers, backyard projects, or turning office supplies into artillery, we're always tinkering. Today we're taking a peek at the most popular DIY projects of 2009.

Create Your Own Sun Jar: Lifehacker Edition

Inspired by a tutorial we posted last year, we decided to make our own DIY sun jars. The trendy summer time lighting accessory retails for $30+ but we were able to make ours for around $10 each. The sun jars proved to be our most popular non-computer DIY of the entire year and readers shared their own creations with us.

The First-Timer's Guide to Building a Computer from Scratch

Building your own computer is a great way to get exactly what you want, the way you want it, without being constrained by the limits and high-prices of mass produced computers. We showed you how to build a computer from start to finish and have fun doing it.

Turn a Sharpie into a Liquid Fueled Rocket

What's standing between you and some office mayhem? Certainly not a lack of Sharpie markers and keyboard dusting spray. Combine the two with this fun DIY project and you've got one of the most awesome pieces of office-machinery we've ever featured.

Properly Erase Your Physical Media

You need to be properly erasing your physical media: all the time, every time. Our guide will show you how to get the job done and done right whether you use software to scrub your disks or you send them to the great data mine in the sky with a 21-gun salute.

Turn an Old Laptop into a Wall-Mounted Computer

Why settle for a digital picture frame when, in the same wall space, you could mount an entirely functional computer/slideshow player/TV tuner? One Lifehacker reader turned an old laptop into a super-charged digital frame.

$8 DIY Aluminum Laptop Stand

We've always been keen on DIY laptop stands, but reader Aaron Kravitz—inspired by an attractive $50 stand—went above and beyond, creating one of the most attractive DIY laptop stands we've featured to date.

Build an IKEA NAS On the Cheap

If the Hive Five on best home server software got you excited about setting up a home server but you're not keen on another unsightly PC in your home, check out this DIY IKEA NAS.

Build a DIY Portable Air Conditioner

We've shown you how to make an air conditioner (even for as low as $30), but what if you wanted something you can put in your car and take with you? While it's no substitute for a fully-charged and factory-fresh AC system, it'll keep you cool.

Turn a Bookshelf into a Secret Passage

Who hasn't dreamed of having a mystery-story-style secret passageway? While a trick bookshelf is pretty awesome in itself, this secret passage hides a home office with clever style. One industrious Lifehacker reader and his girlfriend had grown tired of seeing their office from their living space, so they hid it behind a wall of books.

Wire Your House with Ethernet Cable

You've ripped a movie on your laptop, and now want it on that fancy new home theater PC next to your TV. If you've got the time, wiring your house with Cat-5e cable could make transfer times a distant memory.

Rain Gutters as Cable Management Tools

Suppose you were inspired by the cheap DIY home pizza oven—but weren't so sure your home insurance would cover oven modifications. We've covered the invisible floating bookshelf once or twice before, but if you liked the idea but weren't keen on ruining a book in the process, weblog May December Home's got you covered.

Instead of storing your books upright on top of the shelf, the inverted bookshelf holds all of your books in place using elastic webbing so you can hang them below the shelf—all the while allowing you to still take them out and put them back on as needed.

Inspired by our guide to giving an old laptop new life with cheap or free projects, Lifehacker reader Brian turned his aging Dell laptop into an incredible under-the-cabinet kitchen PC.

A few years ago, blogger Jimmie Rodgers's camera was stolen while volunteering in an impoverished Brazilian community, so he did what any sane person would do: He bought a new camera and made it ugly. With his uglified camera, Rodgers was able to snap pictures freely during the rest of his trip without worrying too much that his ostensibly crappy camera would end up stolen.

Nothing adds space to a desk or home theater setup like a simple monitor or TV stand, and weblog IKEA Hacker details how to build your own stand on-the-cheap with a few inexpensive items from IKEA.

Repurpose Your Analog Television

You don't need to run out and buy a new TV because of the DTV switchover. If you did anyways, Make Magazine has put together quite a guide to giving old TVs new life.

If you need some cheap and novel ambient lighting for your next party, you're only a box of ping-pong balls and a string of lights away from solving your lighting worries.

You already shelled out your hard earned cash for a swanky laptop, why drop more cash on an overpriced laptop stand? Cardboard alone can do the trick, as detailed in this step-by-step tutorial.

We love DIY projects here at Lifehacker. Whether we’re building computers, backyard projects, or turning office supplies into artillery, we’re always tinkering. Today we’re taking a peek at the most popular DIY projects of 2009.

Building your own computer is a great way to get exactly what you want, the way you want it, without being constrained by the limits and high-prices of mass produced computers. We showed you how to build a computer from start to finish and have fun doing it.

Turn a Sharpie into a Liquid Fueled Rocket

What’s standing between you and some office mayhem? Certainly not a lack of Sharpie markers and keyboard dusting spray. Combine the two with this fun DIY project and you’ve got one of the most awesome pieces of office-machinery we’ve ever featured.

Properly Erase Your Physical Media

You need to be properly erasing your physical media: all the time, every time. Our guide will show you how to get the job done and done right whether you use software to scrub your disks or you send them to the great data mine in the sky with a 21-gun salute.

One Lifehacker reader turned an old laptop into a super-charged digital frame.

$8 DIY Aluminum Laptop Stand

We’ve shown you how to make an air conditioner (even for as low as $30), but what if you wanted something you can put in your car and take with you? While it’s no substitute for a fully-charged and factory-fresh AC system, it’ll keep you cool.

Turn a Bookshelf into a Secret Passage

Who hasn’t dreamed of having a mystery-story-style secret passageway? While a trick bookshelf is pretty awesome in itself, this secret passage hides a home office with clever style. One industrious Lifehacker reader and his girlfriend had grown tired of seeing their office from their living space, so they hid it behind a wall of books.

Wire Your House with Ethernet Cable

If you’ve got the time, wiring your house with Cat-5e cable could make transfer times a distant memory.

Instead of storing your books upright on top of the shelf, the inverted bookshelf holds all of your books in place using elastic webbing so you can hang them below the shelf—all the while allowing you to still take them out and put them back on as needed.

A few years ago, blogger Jimmie Rodgers’s camera was stolen while volunteering in an impoverished Brazilian community, so he did what any sane person would do: He bought a new camera and made it ugly.

If you need some cheap and novel ambient lighting for your next party, you’re only a box of ping-pong balls and a string of lights away from solving your lighting worries.

According to the research of the Environmental Protection Agency a lot of people tend to keep the old computers and laptops or their parts even if they do not use them at all. Some others store them for long or even throw away into trash. In case you are the consumer who does not know what to do with the old computer, you have a couple of options: you can trash it, sell it or give it away. Throwing the laptop into the trash is not the best idea since it results in a serious pollution of the landfill. Giving it away make other benefit. In case you sell the laptop, it will save the territory from the pollution, benefits some fellow human being and at the same time you get some cash. If you belong to the group of users who want to get rid of the used laptop, there are a lot of reasons for selling it as soon as possible.

It is a good way to get the cash at the moment. In average you can get about 100$ for the used laptop. If the device was well cared and it is provided with high-end technologies, it can be sold for as much as 800$. Most of the online companies will permit you to sell the computer eve if the battery will be dead and the screen is broken. Some of the places can even take it in case it lacks some of parts.

It is very convenient and fast to sell the used laptop with the help of the internet. First of all, you have to find the laptop recycler. Then you have to fill in all of the features of your laptop. As soon as you select the model and the brand of the device you will be offered some quotes. It is better to inform the company about the broken parts so you will be provided with the most accurate quote.

Selling the old laptop, you are helping the environment since the landfill became seriously polluted with the poisonous heavy metal. The companies that take care about the electronics waste are huge sources of toxic pollution. Selling the laptop, you save one more part of electronic equipment from getting on the landfill.

Besides, if you do not need the old laptop it does not mean that there is a person who is in need of it. It is a way to help some computer user. Before the laptop is sold for reduced price it is usually refurbished by a lot of companies. There also can be an option of selling only usable parts of the computer.

However, do not forget to clean all of the personal information from the hard drive. Even though a lot of companies promise to take care about it, it is recommended to do that on your own.

Have you heard that you can really get free laptop?
