Posted by on Friday, 20 January, 2012

Ever find yourself shredding the gnar and wishing you could share the breathtaking rush of scenery with others? Well, now you can, courtesy of Zeal Optics. Not content to sit on its GPS-laden laurels, the company’s added a new twist to the ‘ol polarized ski googles, embedding the iON with an HD camera for 170-degree wide angle recording. The inbuilt module, centered up top, pulls in video and audio at full 1080p and can be controlled using an array of buttons alongside the mask or via the bundled PC / Mac software. If you’re not interested in reliving your downhill trek one swoosh at a time, there’s always the 8 megapixel cam for photo-taking. Unfortunately, this high-tech eyewear can’t wirelessly transmit your captured media — at least, not this version — so you’ll have to make due with the included microSD card. Sound like a neat proposition? Good, the be prepared to cough up 9 for this high-def slope accessory. Official presser awaits you after the break.

Another example of how the iPhone is changing everything

Posted by on Friday, 28 October, 2011

ProductShot 3 FullSize

The Artefact Group has come-up with this concept (WVIL) camera that has a touch interface like the iPhone, wireless capabilities and changeable SLR optics. It is a sign of how the iPhone user interface is becoming the preferred way of interacting with digital devices. And while this is the right way of thinking about the camera of the future, it is unlikely that this kind of camera will succeed. Instead what is going to happen is that with powerful new processors and graphics, we are going to see the acceleration of the software-enabled camera revolution, which will give us access to many of the SLR capabilities.

How Much Does It Cost To Waterproof A Leica M8? ~$6,700

By Andrew Liszewski

So you’ve already dropped somewhere in the neighborhood of $6,000 on a Leica M8, but now you’ve got the itch to take it with you the next time you go diving. Now obviously the camera would barely survive a plunge in a shallow puddle, but if you’re willing to spend another ~$6,700 (£4,393.47) you’ll be able to take it to depths of up to 150 feet with the Epoque UHR-LM8 underwater housing, while still being able to use the majority of the camera’s functions.

The housing is made of aluminum keeping it lightweight yet durable, and the glass components are all uncoated to provide as minimal light interference for the camera’s optics while it’s sealed up inside. Now I’m sure the whole setup will result in some great shots, but if you’re seriously interested in underwater photography I think that $12,000+ investment could be better spent elsewhere.
