Jarre AeroSystem One gets a Lalique crystal facelift, we go hands-on

We saw the original AeroSystem One saunter into our lives a couple of month’s back, and now Jarre Technologies has collaborated with crystal house Lalique to give it a makeover. The partnership sees the original iPod dock covered in smooth glass and cut metal, which certainly sets it apart from pretty much any other dock we’ve ever seen. The dock connector sits at the top, and being inset, isn’t suitable for iPads, but if you’re getting one of these, we imagine you don’t want to ruin the aesthetic by perching a slate on top anyway. There is, however, a USB connection meaning this isn’t an iDevice only affair. If you’ve got the estimated £10,000 (or about ,840) lying around, it’ll have to keep burning that hole in your pocket until some time in March. We managed to get a quick hands — and ears — on with the only two units in the UK, but couldn’t explore much beyond how it looked in-store, bar an awkward moment when we placed an iPhone on it, only to discover it set to full volume. Check the gallery below for a closer look, or hit the PR after the break for more info.

Vuzix designs Smart Glasses to look like sunshades, tout connected transparent display

Posted by on Saturday, 7 January, 2012

Vuzix has announced plans to develop a stylish head-mounted display solution in the form of Smart Glasses, through a licensing partnership with Nokia. The yet-unnamed product would integrate a bright, high-contrast display with a pair of seemingly ordinary-looking sunglasses — sounds like a perfect companion to the ZionEyez in-glasses camera prototype we saw last month. In Vuzix’s words:

This amazing new technology starts with a compact display engine capable of hi contrast and brightness for outdoor use. The output is then relayed into a 1.4 mm thick plastic waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface which squeezes the light down the waveguide and then two dimensionally expands the image back into the user’s eye, creating an image that is then mixed into the real world.

Naturally, the company envisions its Smart Glasses solution as a web-connected device, letting you watch videos or browse the internet while still being able to see-and-avoid pedestrians as you walk on the sidewalk or obstacles while behind the wheel — try doing that with a Kindle or smartphone (better yet, please don’t). Vuzix expects its Smart Glasses solution to start appearing as early as this summer, but we’ll be getting an early look next week at CES.

LG, Prada officially renew phone partnership, confirm v3.0 for early 2012

Posted by on Thursday, 24 November, 2011

Five years after first linking up for a “new iconic phone” (the first one may be best remembered for slightly predating the iPhone’s large touchscreen / few buttons look) LG and Prada have announced the renewal of their exclusive phone partnership, as well as the planned arrival of the third phone in the series early next year. The teaser image (above) shows a design that resembles the Prada K2 / P940 phone we’ve seen in leaked pictures and passing through the FCC recently, and will supposedly feature Android 2.3, a 4.3-inch display, and 21Mbps HSPA+ speeds in a 9mm thin frame. Check out the press release after the break and try to remember where you left your old Prada Link watch.

Logitech Alert Video Security System gets Dropbox support, lets you park 100GB of footage in the cloud

Posted by on Saturday, 12 November, 2011

We liked Logitech’s Alert Video Security System when we took it for a week-long spin last year, which at that point allowed remote access to live HD camera footage, and video stored on your PC. But a new partnership with Dropbox adds cloud storage to the equation, letting you boot video directly to the web to supplement the PC- and microSD-based options already in place. Packages are available today, and come with 2GB of storage for free, 50GB for per month or 100GB for per month — Logitech isn’t exactly giving away the service, but when you consider that a bare-bones Alert system costs 0, those virtual add-ons sound a bit more reasonable. Jump past the break for the full rundown from Logitech, and get ready to beef up those passwords — having your email account hacked is one thing, but you certainly don’t want anyone watching you at home, in real-time or the past.

After failed Roku partnership, Netgear eyes Google TV

Posted by on Wednesday, 14 September, 2011

Netgear is evaluating the use of Google TV for future digital living room products, according to a report from Slashgear. A company spokesperson told the website that “as a platform it’s not there yet.” However, that won’t stop Netgear from taking a closer look at the TV operating system, especially now that the release of a big update based on Honeycomb and access to the Android Market is imminent.

Netgear is no stranger to the online video set-top box market. The company briefly teamed up with Roku last fall, bringing co-branded Roku boxes to retailers in time for the holiday season. However, the honeymooon between the two companies was apparently very short-lived: A Roku spokesperson told us recently that the partnership with Netgear ended “last year.”

The router maker is now trying to corner the market for sub-0 media players with its own product dubbed NeoTV, which offers access to some 100 content sources, including Netflix and VUDU.

So why is Netgear looking at Google TV despite having just built its own platform? Access to the Android Market could be a big boon for anyone releasing products for this market, and a built-in web browser will give users access to a wide range of additional content.

However, embracing Google TV is not without risks. Logitech recently had to write off millions after its Google TV-powered Logitech Revue set-top box sold far below expectations. The company is now selling the product below cost for . Netgear would probably want to wait until bigger players like Samsung and Vizio have rolled out their Google TV products to avoid a similar fate as Logitech.
