The Canon 7D loves inclement weather, even at Antarctic levels

More and more the 7D looks like the camera for me. Not that I go to Antarctica a lot, but when I do trek about, my camera comes with me rain or shine. My old 350D/Rebel XT survived quite a torrent in Kyoto, but I wouldn’t trust it or my newer Rebel XSi in a blizzard. Luckily, my job can be done from home; I don’t have to crawl on my belly through frozen mud and risk seal bites every day at magic hour. This guy does.

Ole Jørgen Liodden
does field reviews of Canon gear, and he recently took the new 7D down to Antarctica to test it out alongside a 5D mk II and 1DS mk III. It performed admirably, I’m happy to say, though you can read the reservations and details in his write-up, which I won’t repeat here.

BY THE WAY. Did you notice the terrifying seal maw in the lower left right corner of the picture above? How would you like to take video of penguins with one of those bastards chewing on your tripod — or worse? The life of the nature photographer is a strange and terrifying one to be sure.

Fight Night Round 4 (and everyone else on planet earth) predicts a Pacquiao win

I know something about MMA, but I know next to nothing about boxing. Yet even I can laugh about the latest EA Sports prediction, via Fight Night Round 4, that says that Manny Pacquiao will beat Miguel Cotto this weekend. I laugh because saying Pacquiao will win the fight is like saying the sun will rise in the morning. (Now watch Cotto knock out Pacquiao in the first.)

This is just the latest simulation that EA Sports has run with its games. The most recent one, that the Philadelphia Phillies would beat the New York Yankees in seven games didn’t exactly pan out.

EA Sports has also predicted that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win the NBA Finals this year, and that the Pittsburgh Penguins will win the Stanley Cup.

Did EA Sports already do a UEFA Champions League prediction yet? (I imagine after the seeding we’ll see a FIFA World Cup prediction.)

And now we play the waiting game.

NBA Live 10 predicts a Cavs win this season (and LeBron will dominate all over again)

lebron

It was just a few days ago that EA Sports’ NHL 10 predicted that the Pittsburg Penguins would win the Stanley Cup this season. Now it’s the NBA’s turn, with NBA Live 10 having predicted that, yes, the Cavs will finally do it and win it all. And then LeBron can finally leave Cleveland and go to the Nets!

So the number crunchers at EA Sports ran an entire season in the game, which ended with the Cleveland Cavaliers beating the Los Angeles Lakers in The Finals. LeBron James wins the regular season and Finals MVP, and then runs for president of Earth, and wins. Easily.

Given that I haven’t played an NBA game since NBA Jam (at the local Pizza Hut when I was something like 6-years-old), I cannot comment on how accurate all this prognosticating is. Is the game very “sim-y” or “arcade-y”? Don’t know! What I do know, however, is that LeBron James is probably the top athlete in the U.S. right now. Feel free to disagree, but you’re wrong ;-) (yes, we’re bringing emoticons back)

NHL 10 predicts the Pittsburgh Penguins as Stanley Cup champs

Neither of these teams are the Pittsburgh Penguins

Hockey is often referred to as the sweet science, but that has nothing to do with this here post. Well, sorta. You know how every year you hear about how Video Game has predicted Team A will “the big game”? Add the Pittsburgh Penguins to that list.

Yup, EA Sports’ NHL 10—I think the last hockey game I played was NHL ‘96 for the Sega Genesis—has predicted that the Pittsburgh Penguins will win this season’s Stanley Cup. So says an e-mail I just got from EA.

Pittsburgh is the second largest city in the state of Pennsylvania, and was founded in 1758. It’s named after the British Secretary of State William Pitt, the Elder. The city also recently hosted the G20 conference, which accomplished nothing.
