The Resonance of Fate revolves around a future civilisation which is crumbling into anarchy. Vast cities are being poisoned while the aristocratic higher classes do nothing to help, and you control three heroes searching for justice. Gameplay revolves solely around firearm battles, and as you move forward further your firearms will be custom-made and enhanced.

The battle technique used within Resonance of Fate has split many audiences. Firstly, it is fairly unforgiving and piles a lot of info onto the gamer directly, making it all appear fairly tough when beginning. Nevertheless, commit a couple of hard hours to perfecting it and the result’s an elaborate and dynamic system boasting balletic gun fighting.

Visually, the title is innovative to have a look at and offers a nice steampunk inspired world. The characters are pretty in a generic anime manner, although the ongoing ’boutique’ feature, which lets you customise your character’s look during Resonance of Fate, is a brilliant addition.

Overall, this is a nice addition to the JRPG style. It takes a chance with the age assured battle system and, while the outcome won’t be to everyones appreciation, it’s a worthy effort. It looks great and crucially consists of the favourite RPG features such as cities and NPC interplay, which have been strangely missing in other current high profile releases. If you’re a fan of JRPGs with an individual twist, give Resonance of Fate a whirl.

You see, both my home and office PCs use LCD screens, while MSI claims that its Wind uses an LED display. Whatever the case, my eyes seem more used to the Wind’s screen. Understandable, since it has been my main computer ever since I bought it.

Last week I realized that I was wasting money. The office computer was provided to me, yet I’m wearing out my Wind. The home desktop on the other hand is rarely used, meaning I’m not maximizing the money I spent on it. So I decided to start spreading my usage among the different computers, hopefully making full use of my hard-earned money.

Unfortunately, though I spent the same amount of time staring into my desktop displays (both 1680 x 1050 20-inchers) as I do when using the Wind, the former seemed to cause headaches. There’s no appreciable difference in brightness, so I can only assume that the larger LCDs cause more radiation, which affects me more severely. Or perhaps since my eyes are used to my Wind, it’s learned to cope with the strain better?

There’s already been quite a bit of ink spilled over the demise of the CrunchPad but I thought I’d add a few drops. My opinion is this: the CrunchPad was a testament to the power of online media and a fascinating study in the ability of new media to enact real changes on the real world. While the product faltered, it’s fascinating that the project went as far as it did given the forces arrayed against it.

Think about what happened: if we reduce this to its component parts you have some dudes in California who talked to some dudes in Singapore and who agreed to work together on a piece of hardware. I’ve seen the prototypes and the thing worked and worked well. Most hardware manufacturers can barely take each others meetings let alone coordinate a massive project while separated by a culture and an ocean.

I won’t speak on the problems with Fusion Garage but up until a few hours ago the entire TC/CG team expected to see the CrunchPad at some point in our lives. This is a massive change in this industry. A few years ago a blogger couldn’t get a press pass to CES let alone enough attention to build out a massive and mass-market hardware project.

Other organizations should learn from this or ignore it at their peril. It would behoove the New York Times, for example, to build something like the CrunchPad for consumption of the newspaper. They won’t do it because it is seemingly off-mission. This is what separates new media from old – the acceptance of risk. You can inject that instinct into old media but, as Devin wrote, “old” media can’t make the same mistakes we can.

Trust me: I’m not patting TC on the back here. I had very little to do with the design of this thing and I was as excited – and incredulous – as you were in regards to this product. It was great being part of the organization that began it and it’s sad to see it go.
