83-year old woman gets replacement 3D printed titanium jaw, makes her the coolest member of the bridge club

Posted by on Monday, 6 February, 2012

3D printers are continuing to force their way into medical applications and the latest beneficiary is an 83-year old woman. She’s the first patient to receive a titanium jaw crafted by those not-so dimensionally-challenged printers. The method was developed by the BIOMED Research Institute at Hasselt University in Belgium and creates the replacement from layer-upon-layer of titanium dust. A computer-controlled laser ensures that the correct molecules are fused together. The technique, the first to replace the entire jaw, takes mere hours to make the substitute choppers, with other options taking several days. While the final product weighs a bit more than its natural predecessor, but that didn’t stop the patient returning close to “normal speaking and swallowing” the day after the operation.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer’s ICS update currently awaiting Google’s approval

Posted by on Monday, 16 January, 2012

Users of the ASUS Transformer Prime may already be enjoying their hot-off-the-press upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, but when will its predecessor be so lucky? We’ve heard that it would be inbound sometime in February, but there’s still a slight possibility that it’ll get here even sooner. On its North American Facebook page, ASUS responded to a curious user, mentioning that it’s in the process of getting Google’s official stamp of approval. Once this is complete, ASUS will click the big red button and commence pushing Android 4.0 out to the tablet. So hang tight, folks, the wait’s almost over.

Samsung outs revamped Galaxy Ace Plus: bigger screen, worse resolution

Posted by on Tuesday, 3 January, 2012
Samsung clearly didn’t spend the holiday season kicking back listening to Dick Clark, or else it wouldn’t be able to show off the revamped edition of the Galaxy Ace: the Galaxy Ace Plus. Unimaginative names aside, the budget blower gets a speed bump, to last year’s minimum spec — 1GHz processor, five megapixel camera, 3GB internal memory, HSDPA and a 3.65-inch HVGA (320 x 480) screen (really, Samsung?). You’ll get the same combination of Gingerbread and TouchWiz, so you might have to go elsewhere if you wanna upgrade to ICS. The cheapie phone will go on sale this month in Europe, Russia, Latin America, Asia, Africa and China, we guess retailing in the same bracket as its predecessor. Head on past the break to read all about it in a combination of words and punctuation we like to call a press release.

Internet Explorer holds onto top browser crown while Chrome and Firefox tussle over second place

Posted by on Monday, 2 January, 2012

Both Net Applications and StatCounter have released their figures for browser market share for 2011 and it makes for largely unsurprising reading. Internet Explorer’s full share has dropped but it still maintains the top spot — a 52 percent share according to Net Applications and 39 percent according to StatCounter. Meanwhile, second place remains tantalizingly within reach for Chrome, which has made headway catching up with Firefox, whose growth had apparently stalled during 2011. According to Net Applications, Firefox held a 21.8 percent share of browser users this month, while Chrome reached 19.1 percent, up just under 8 percent and capping off a second year of impressive growth. Meanwhile, StatCounter pegs Google’s browser at second place for the end of the year, claiming 27.3 percent versus the 25.3 percent share grabbed by its vulpine rival. Unsurprisingly, the Windows Team Blog takes a different slant on recent browsing trends, trumpeting that its latest version, Internet Explorer 9, continues to grow on Windows 7. This is, however, balanced out by a corresponding drop in the users of its predecessor, IE 8. Better luck next year, eh, Microsoft?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus review

Posted by on Monday, 21 November, 2011

We’ve already established that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a great tablet. Then, just recently, we summarily found that the 1.2-inch smaller Galaxy Tab 8.9 is an even better tablet — at least for anyone who wants to take their slate places. So, following that logic, the even more petite Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus should be the best of the three, right?

Not so fast. We’ve been here before, and things weren’t exactly great. The original Galaxy Tab was, of course, a 7-incher and wasn’t universally well received thanks to a number of problems — the first being a 0 MSRP. Another issue was an Android 2.2 build that tried its best but was ultimately ill-suited for tablet duties. This new 7-inch installment packs a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a tablet-friendlier build of Android 3.2 Honeycomb and a somewhat more palatable 0 price tag.

So, it’s clearly better equipped than its predecessor, but that one shipped a whopping 12 months ago. How does the newer, fancier Tab compete in this newer, fancier present? Read on to find out.

Telsa Roadster to return in 2014, 3-Series fighter in the works

Posted by on Sunday, 30 October, 2011
Didn’t have enough time to count 10 million pennies before the original Tesla Roadster went out of production? Well you’re in luck, because there’ll be a successor. Space cadet and entrepreneur extraordinaire, Elon Musk, confirmed to Autocar that a new Roadster would return in 2014. Unlike its Lotus-based predecessor, the redux will apparently be based on Tesla’s third-generation platform, which the automag muses will likely be built on a”shortened version of … the Model S.” Musk also noted that the platform will be more “mass-market,” giving rise to more pedestrian cars “like BMW’s 3 Series” — his words, not ours. With the Model S sedan on its way, and the Model X after that, the company certainly has its work cut out for it. But, if either are as delightful as prior Teslas, that’ll be reason to cheer.
