A root-fifth chord, also known as a power chord is the simplest way to play a B Chord on the guitar. The 5th String gives you the root note for each subsequent chord in power chord progressions.

First off we need to find the B note to use as our root note in the chord. We’re not going to use the 6th string (low E) so we move down to the A string and count up from there, we go past A# and find the B on the second fret.

For a 5th string power chord we form a bar from the root note down to the high E string. Lay your index finger from the 2nd fret on the A string all the way down to form the bar for the B Chord. You will need to apply the most pressure to the B note and not worry too much about what the rest of your finger does.

I want you to do a practice strum at this stage to make sure you’ve got just the B note sounding clearly, remember it’s just the first finger pressing down on the 2nd fret of the A String (2nd string from the top) the rest of the bar you have formed doesn’t need to press down for the strings to ring clearly because your other fingers will be called into action in their place. Try to get your index finger as close to the fret as possible for the best tone.

If there is buzz in the note, increase the pressure. If that doesn’t remedy the problem, adjust the position of the fingers relative to the second fret bar. Some minor adjustments such as these should help to alleviate any deficiencies in one’s tone.

Adding the fifth note and the octave to this B power chord gives us a rich sounding chord. The fifth note in the B Major Scale is an F#, remember the B Major scale goes B, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A#, B. We want to play the F# on the 3rd string from the top which is the D String. The B octave is found one string below the F#, still on the 4th fret.

There are several ways in which one can fret these remaining notes. One may use their 3rd and 4th fingers – ring and pinky – to fret the notes individually. If this method is chosen, use the ring finger to fret the note on the larger 4th string and the pinky finger to fret the note on the comparatively light 3rd string. Remember to position the fingers close to the forward fret for the best possible tone.

The second method available to you might help if your fingers get tired in that position, you simply create another bar with your ring or pinky finger from the 3rd string down. For the first few times the stretch from the first finger on the 2nd fret to the 3rd finger on the 4th fret will be painful, but over time this will prove to be the fastest way to for the B chord on your guitar.
