GPS gadgets are tools which obtain Global Positioning System signals in order to determine the user’s present location on the planet. The Global Positioning System is composed of twenty-seven satellites that orbit our planet. Twenty-four of which are in functioning, and the remaining 3 are extras activated only when one satellite is out of order. GPS devices locate four or more of these satellites, figure out the distance to each, and use this information to determine its own location. This process is called trilateration.

These GPS navigation systems have a number of applications including but not limited to land, air, and sea travel. They have also been used by the armed forces. Nowadays, you can already buy handheld devices that have non-vehicle applications just like those utilized by sportsmen and backpackers. These handheld devices usually have electronic compasses, altimeters and provide their users with the ability to program routes, and plot a trail.

There are also GPS devices which act as personal trainers enabling their wearers to monitor and share different aspects of their workouts like speed, number of laps, and miles traversed. These features are the reason why Garmin 305 reviews and Garmin 205 reviews are very encouraging. One more reason why Garmin 205 and Garmin 305 reviews are favorable is that they also have rudimentary but dependable routing and mapping capabilities apart from being a personal trainer, eliminating the need of runners who also love backcountry excursions to purchase separate gadgets. Garmin 305 and Garmin 205 reviews also highlight their impressive sensitivity even under dense canopy.

If you intend to bring these dedicated GPS gadgets during your backcountry excursions, it is imperative that you know how to make sense of the GPS coordinates being displayed. GPS coordinates show your relative position from the equator and the prime meridian and these are often displayed as degrees, minutes, and seconds. Displayed on your gadget are 2 sets of coordinates and these are the latitude which is your North or South coordinates, and longitude or your East or West coordinates.

When the coordinates N 25° 07.450 E 15° 07.55 are given, this means you are in a location that is a little more than 25° north of the equator, and a little over 15° east of the prime meridian. To find out where you are on a map, use those coordinates and find out where they intersect.

The 2011 holiday season that was kicked off earlier today (Black Friday) is proving to be a big boost for m-commerce as shoppers are using their smartphones, mobile apps and other devices to go bargain hunting according to various sources. Call it the season on couch commerce.

According to IBM’s Smarter Commerce division, the number of consumers using a mobile device to visit a retailer’s site is 17.37 percent with almost 9.73 percent of consumers using mobile device to make a purchase. IBM points out that iPhone leads all mobile device traffic – no surprise – at 6.77 percent, followed by Android phones at 5.37 percent and iPad at 4.67 percent.

Akamai’sdata traffic trends show that while traffic on mobile websites of retailers is up nearly four times compared to last year. The increases reported by IBM and Akamai are backed by a PayPal, which says that it saw a 538 percent increase in global payment volumes compared to Black Friday 2010. In addition, PayPal saw a year-over-year 350 percent increase in the number of customers shopping through PayPal mobile.

GSI Commerce, a division of eBay that hosts commerce-related websites for several large retailers says that it saw a 345 percent increase in US mobile sales compared to last year’s Black Friday. Channel Advisor which tracks the eCommerce related businesses found that:

”Through the year, we saw traffic from mobile devices in the 6-7% range and on Thanksgiving it spiked up to 10%. What’s really interesting is that Tablets (mostly the iPad) were the majority of that at 7.8% (with Smartphones at 1.2%). It will be interesting to see if that trend inverts on BlackFriday as shoppers move from ‘Tablet couch commerce’ to shopping with their phones while they are out fighting the crowds.”

All this should not come as a surprise to anyone. Even last year it was pretty obvious that mobile was going to have a major impact on how people shopped during the holiday. We have been talking about that for a while and agreed with Google’s predictions for the mobile commerce this holiday season.

Walmart is ramping up its mobile strategy and releasing a new iPhone app that provides a number of features aimed at improving the shopping experience for users, who are increasingly interacting with the retailer with mobile and social tools in addition to traditional in-store visits. The new iPhone app comes fresh off the heels of Walmart’s first iPad app, which was introduced late last month, and it shows where the company is heading now that it’s rolling all of its mobile products into its new @Walmart Labs. It’s also just in time for the holidays, which are going to be huge for mobile commerce.

The new iPhone app, which should be available in the next few days, packs in a number of features, including a new smart shopping list tool that allows people to speak their shopping list into their phone to create a list. Users can also create a list by scanning a barcode or typing in products. The shopping list, which can be shared by email, can be paired with a new budgeting tool that pulls up real-time prices for products, so consumers can calculate their bill ahead of time. And they can grab manufacturer coupons for the items on their list or find other coupons for products at Walmart. Users will need to print out the coupons from an email.

Walmart will enable users to pull product information — including reviews, ratings, price and availability — from the app. They’ll also be able to scan QR codes for information. In a test in a limited number of stores, Walmart will provide a store item finder tool that tells people the exact location of products. It can work with a smart shopping list, which can organize the products by their location.

The recently released iPad app is designed specifically for a more casual browsing experience. It provides users with a view on the right side of the best recent deals and it let’s users drill down to get more detailed product information. There’s a mode that lets you browse one specific store so the items are organized first by products you can buy at a user’s favorite location.

The products are part of Walmart’s efforts to ride the big shift in commerce as the introduction of mobile and social upend the way consumers buy things. Increasingly, shoppers come into stores armed with smartphones while others hunt at home on tablets, guided by recommendations from friends on social networks. Walmart is trying to get ahead of that and address all the different ways people want to shop, whether it’s in store, online or out and about while on a mobile device. They’re also trying to use mobile to help provide people with more self-serve tools and deliver more more personalized experience.

“Mobile gives us an opportunity to bust up the ideas of channels and create a seamless experience for consumers,” said Paul Cousineau, Walmart VP of mobile products.

It’s interesting to see Walmart exposing more of its data to help consumers. This can be tricky for a retailer but it’s helpful for consumers to see in-store inventory and real-time pricing. I think it’s still early in this epic transformation of commerce. But companies are going to have to be smart about how they leverage all these new and disruptive tools in the hands of consumers. Increasingly, consumers are empowered by mobile and social, and companies need to keep up and provide great shopping experiences that incorporates all the ways people want to search, research and buy.

We’ll be discussing more about the future of commerce with Venky Harinarayan, SVP of Walmart Global eCommerce and Head of @WalmartLabs at our inaugural GigaOM Roadmap conference Thursday in San Francisco.

Nintendo’s latest earnings report may be a litany of woe, but at least the outfit’s semi-annual financial results briefing bore good news: the 3DS eShop is about to get a kick in the pants. Today’s 3DS store gets the job done, but it’s hampered by disorganized categories, limited accessibility, and poor download management. Want something better? It’s on the way — a late November update is slated to bring “sleep mode” background downloading to the fledgling console, and opens the door for publishers to release in-game premium DLC and “limited-play” demos. Nintendo is even taking steps to address the handheld’s lousy shopping experience, announcing a companion website where users will be able to browse the eShop from a PC or smartphone. Eventually 3DS owners will be able to buy content directly from the eShop website, but at launch shoppers will need to scan a QR code with the handheld to make a purchase. It’s not a perfect plan, but at least it’s a start. Baby steps Nintendo, baby steps.

Tech companies so far have stumbled when it comes to getting people to be mindful of their energy use and conserve. But a new German startup, Changers, thinks it’s come up with the right incentives to attract the do-gooder crowd: sell mobile solar chargers and build a social network around earning energy credits and online shopping.

Changers, founded in 2010, hopes to build a community and marketplace of eco-conscious users and retailers through shopping and competition. Here’s the proposition: you buy a solar charging kit that, when connected to your computer, will allow you to upload data about the energy generated by the charger and stored in a battery. That data goes to your profile page on Changers’ website, where the energy, measured in watt-hours, will be converted into credits that you can use to buy actual stuff from online shops.

The solar kit charges at a rate of 4 watts per hour and can hold 16 watts in its battery, which can supply power for two iPhones. So you can charge up the battery during the day and then transfer those electrons to your cell phones, tablets or other gadgets at night.

Solar social network

Through your page on Changers, you can track you solar energy generation, the carbon offset created by the solar electricity (2 watt hours of solar electricity equal to 1 gram of carbon emission), and see how you stack up against friends, neighbors or those in other countries. The energy-to-money conversion rate could be different, depending on the retailers, said Hans Raffauf, head of communications at Changers.

The site’s first retailer is Holstee, which sells clothes, bags, coffee makers, sunglasses, ear buds, and other products made from recycled materials. To shop on Holstee, you will have to accumulate a minimum of 100 watts, which gives you a voucher.

While the solar charging kit will cost you 9, joining the Changers community is free. Changers, which has raised an undisclosed seed investment of “a couple of million dollars” from German solar company Centrotherm Photovoltaics, wants to charge retailers in the future, Raffauf said. That won’t happen until Changers builds up a user base large enough to attract more retailers.

And, yes, sharing what your energy production and rewards via Facebook and Twitter is highly encouraged.

Web 2.0 launch

Changers hails from Berlin, Germany, but is launching its site in the U.S. primarily because it wants to start at a place with early technology adopters in order to get feedback and tweak its site. Raffauf said Germany could actually be a larger market – Germans are ahead of Americans when it comes to supporting solar electricity and emission-reduction plans.

Building an active online community isn’t easy. You have to create fun ways for people to interact and offer rewards that people want. And it can’t cost too much money, for while early adopters are happy to shell out big bucks for an iPhone and iPad, they often won’t pay anything for online social circles and web games. The 9 charging kit can therefore be a serious barrier for Changers to attract a big crowd. Raffauf said the company hopes to be able to subsidize the purchases, but it doesn’t have the means to do so now.

Finding the right retailers and enough of them also will be crucial not just for Changers to attract initial users but also to sustain user interest over time. The challenge of sustaining consumer interest has been a big hurdle for many energy management hardware and app developers, some of whom mistakenly thought that consumers would continue to be engaged with their energy management tools. Google and Microsoft, for example, launched energy measuring tools only to pull them earlier this year.

Energy software startup Opower, in partnership with Facebook and the Natural Resources Defense Council, thinks it has come up with something better. Opower plans to launch a Facebook app next year that will let users compare their energy use with their friends and get energy efficiency tips. The goal is to build “the world’s largest social energy community,” and the means involve using games, competitions and Facebook’s already large online user base.

Raffauf believes consumers need more incentives than energy data, games and competitions. “We are able to reward you for your behavior in a monetary way,” he said. “It’s a motivation that will get people to use it.”
