Japanese TORo II gallops ahead at a mechanical snail’s pace (video)

Posted by on Wednesday, 6 July, 2011

Snails with benefits? Our salt shaker might disagree. But some enterprising engineers over at Japan’s Chuo University managed to turn this garden-variety pest into fodder for mechatronic inspiration. Based on the gastropod’s preferred method of ‘galloping’ — wherein waves of foot-to-head muscle contractions propel it forward — researchers at the Mechatronics Lab created TORo II, an omnidirectional robot that could make its way to a hospital near you. Why’s that? Well, the bot’s large gripped surface area makes it ideal for narrow, slippery environments — so it won’t budge if knocked into (though you might wind up on the emergency room floor). Although the unique movement technique has been used to create other mecha-mollusks in the past, the team behind this project made sure to create some of their own ceiling and wall-climbing critters — suction definitely included. We admit, we kind of feel guilty about the sodium chloride transgressions of our youth. And now that we know snails can be useful, it’s only a matter of time before the bedbug gets repurposed. Full omnidirectional video awesomeness after the break.

For Fast Excellent Printing, Check Out Lexmark Optra E321 Printer And Toner

Posted by on Saturday, 1 January, 2011

Now, the E320 was a good printer, but then Lexmark decided to upgrade it to the Lexmark Optra E321 printer and it has reached an whole new level. While the early model scored some good customer reviews regarding speed, the upgrade makes the old version look like a snail. With documents flying into the output tray at speeds of 20 pages per minute and with the high quality Lexmark Optra E321 toner, the user will not be disappointed.

This model will provide crisp and clear print with a resolution of 600 x 1200 dots per square inch. Pair this resolution with the memory, which is 8MB, and a consumer will be delighted with the kind of documents that this machine will produce. Some complaints are with the amount of noise the machine makes while printing. With the speed, the noise is understandable.

On the positive side, the E321 has a nice look for a printer. Unlike the typical white or off-white models, this printer is gray, a change for the better. It is great for small places, like a dormitory or tucked in a small home office and weighs only 20 pounds, so it is easy to move around.

There are some inherent design issues in the manufacturing of this printer and this is where the noise issues become apparent. When turning the unit on, the first thing many users noticed was how the buttons on the control panel are loose and rattle when the machine is in use. While on, the E321 has a continuous low-pitched hum, which may not be an issue for some, but is for others. When engaging in printing, the machine makes a noise that has been described by some as a whine as it ramps up, and then again, when it winds down.

The Lexmark Optra E321 printer possesses the average paper capacity that most small printers do, which is 150 pieces of paper. The holding tray can only hold 100 of these pages, though, so consumers should make sure to remove at least fifty pages after they print them if they plan to print all 150 pages in one sitting. This printer also has additional output tray materials that help with the kind of papers that differ from the norm.

This upgraded model has more enjoyable features than its predecessor does. 8MB of memory should be good for the average user, but if a consumer needs more memory, Lexmark offers an extension that holds up to 72MB of memory. Printers need memory so that the computer can just send the document to the printer and the printer can print from its own memory. This helps the printing job go quicker.

The speed of the printing, 20 pages a minute, should make any college student rushing before class happy. If a student has ten minutes before class and a 10-page paper is due, well then he or she may even be able to grab a snack or drink from a vending machine to enjoy while sitting in class. It is much better than using an antiquated printer that takes forever to make a single copy.

Another bonus feature of the Lexmark Optra E321 Printer is that it is both Mac and Windows compatible, something that is rare among budget printers. The Lexmark Optra E321 toner cartridge are efficient and cost effective and are not shipped installed in the printer so that there are no unpleasant spillage surprises when opening the box. For just about $300, it is worth putting up with a little bit of printer hum in exchange for speed and reliability, especially with the quality one can rely on with Lexmark printer toner cartridges. Shop online for extra laser laser toner to find good deals.

Review: 2TB G-Drive External Hard Drive

Posted by on Monday, 30 November, 2009

g-driveThe G-Drive external hard drive line has been out for a bit now. But the latest model is loaded with the Hitachi 2TB 7200RPM 3.5-inch hard drive, which means I had to check it out. Let’s just say, this boy is big, bad, and fast.

Features

  • 2TB 7200RPM SATA II hard drive
  • eSATA, FW800, FW400, USB 2.0 interfaces
  • White LED strobe light
  • MSRP of $349.99

Pros

  • Fast
  • Quiet
  • Sexy

Cons

  • Pricey

Design

Let’s get one thing out of the way first. This could be the best-looking external hard drive on the market. It looks amazing even if you don’t have a Mac Pro. It’s housed in an aluminum enclosure with a modestly-sized heat sink on the bottom and a very bright activity light that could double as a strobe on the front. At 2.6 lbs, it’s actually quite beefy, too. The backside houses the power rocker and all the ports: a Kensginton lock port, eSATA, twin FW800, USB2.0, and the power input. It’s just an external hard drive, folks. Really nothing fancy here.

g-drive-2Thankfully the drive is as solid as it looks. Each piece is milled from aluminum and held together with counter-sunk screws. It’s really quite beautiful and simple but you’ll void the warranty if you tear yours apart.

Performance

g-drive-1Speed and sound. That’s the name of this game. Who cares if it looks gorgeous but is as slow as a snail? So I ran a few files through each one of the interfaces and came away satisfied.

A 6.7GB file

  • eSATA = 1:34 @ 71MB/s
  • FW800 = 1:54 @ 59MB/s
  • USB 2.0 = 4:27 @ 25MB/s

Those numbers are right on par with what a 7200RPM hard drive with a 32MB cache should do. Of course eSATA was the fastest but Firewire 800 isn’t a slouch either. For comparison, a USB 2.0 bus-powered drive transferred the same file in 4:48 @ 24MB/s.

g-drive-3

Unlike a lot of other external hard drives, the G-Drive doesn’t make that much noise. I heard occasional clicks of the hard drive but it’s definitely one of the quieter drives I’ve heard. The solid aluminum enclosure and noise dampening feet are probably to thank for that.

Features

As the Mac-inspired design suggests, the drive is aimed at the OS X crowd, but it works just fine on PCs too. The hard drive comes HFS+ formatted and Time Machine ready, but the included software, or Windows’ Disk Management tool can easily reformat it to NTFS.

Surprisingly, given the $349 price tag, there isn’t any included backup software. I guess Hitachi feels most buyers are probably Mac users and therefore will stick with Time Machine. Still, some users might appreciate and use a basic backup software program.

Overall

The 2TB G-Drive delivers. It can hold a crap-ton of data and manages to keep its transfer speeds up with the best thanks to the fast Hitachi hard drive.  Plus, it looks great next to a Mac or a PC. Too bad the $349 MSRP sets it north of most other options and therefore out of sight for some potential buyers.
