Gadgets You Can Buy As Gifts This Year

Posted by on Tuesday, 11 May, 2010

Choosing a gadget can be a complicated task. There are a huge number of gadget retailers, both online and off, and they offer a numbing array of items. If you’re looking to buy someone a gadget, a lot of your decision will depend on how much money you plan on spending. There are gadgets for every budget, and for every season.

Here’s a few gadgets that may be of interest:

Smartphones: Smartphones are just that, phones with a whole lot of additional smart features. SmartPhones are a new generation of handheld devices which allow you to make cellular and data calls with ease. More powerful than some PDAs, SmartPhones threaten the entire PDA business. The Palm Treo is a notable brand.

UMPCs – Ultra Mobile Personal Computers, also known as the Origami Form factor are geared for the market between PDAs and Laptops. Smaller than laptops, they boast of longer lasting battery life and more software. In fact, one of the main selling points of UMPCs is the fact they run Windows Tablet OS and are compatible with Office. Microsoft and Intel championed the UMPC form factor initially to be offered in the $500-$1000 price range. The reality is, the units will be closer to $1200. Samsung is the first OEM to market with its’innovative Q1 UMPC. They plan on offering it for sale in the US and most of the world in May 2006.

Robots – Domesticated robots like the Roomba are quite a sensation. People are definitely interested in the potential time saving qualities of robots. Robots that mow the lawn and clean the house are now a reality. In the future, more tasks will be assigned to robotic helpers.

Cameras and Camcorders – Sony Handycam has a very hot offering right now with it’s MiniDV Digital Video Recorders. The units have excellent picture quality and shoot straight to mini-DVDs, which should play anywhere. For the price, the HandyCam MiniDV has a rich feature set, which allows for flicker-free filming. You can’t beat a camcorder for capturing precious moments.

Tablet PCs and PDAs – Although feeling pressure from the UMPCs and SmartPhones, PDAs and Tablet PCs are still a popular item.

Blackberry and Palms are still extremely popular PDAs, and Blackberry has over 2 million people using its’ commercial email service. Tablet PCs carry a hefty price-tag, but have excellent features like hand-writing recognition. In fact, use of the stylus is natural, and anyone with an artistic bent would seemingly love this device.

Any of the above items would make an excellent gift for a gadget enthusiast. The main thing to do is consider the person’s lifestyle before making a purchase. Since almost all gadgets carry relatively high price tags, it’s worth finding out for sure what the person wants, or you run the risk of making an expensive mistake. Check all gadgets for the presence of extras, such as service plans, that aren’t included in the purchase price.

Sony bumps the Memory Stick PRO Duo capacity up to 32GB

Posted by on Friday, 21 August, 2009

memory-stick-pro-duo-32-gbOh my, Sony. You have too many memory sticks. With that being said, the Memory Stick PRO Duo will soon be available in 32GB form. This is not to be confused with the recently announced 32GB Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo. These are separate flash memory devices. The added space in the PRO Duo means that Sony Handycam owners can now shoot 225 minutes in Full HD mode. Plus, with this card, the new Cyber-Shot cams can now record 29 minute clips in 720p. I just wish that Sony wouldn’t have so many different flash drive variations – or just adapt industry standards like SD.

Highest Capacity 32GB Model Added To Memory Stick PRO Duo™ Range

• 32GB ideal for stable long-duration HD recording with Handycam®
• Perfect for new Cyber-shot® features including extended video capture and super-fast continuous shooting

The Memory Stick PRO Duo line now goes all the way up to 32GB thanks to the launch of a new high-capacity model.

The Memory Stick PRO Duo 32GB will have a particular appeal to the owners of HD Handycam who need long-duration, stable HD recording capability.

To put this in context, Handycam owners shooting in FH mode (1920 x 1080 Full HD) can now record 225 minutes (3 hours 45 minutes) of HD video using a single card. It is perfect for events such as weddings, birthday parties, and athletic events. You do not have to worry about running out of memory!

HD Handycams are not the only things that will benefit from the size and stable recording characteristics of the 32GB card.

For example, HD video clips capture the moments by using the latest models of Cyber-Shot. And with the latest models of Cyber-shot, each video clip now can be recorded up to 29 minutes (using Fine mode: MP4 1280 x 720). You can enjoy shooting Video clips with Cyber-shot more than ever.

And newly announced Cyber-shot™ TX1 and WX1 are allowing a continuous burst of full-resolution images and creating sweeping panoramas by combining a burst of images. These outstanding features demand an uncompromising approach to the memory. With its ability to store 7 hours 38 minutes of HD video (1280 x 720, 30 fps, mono) or 6,500 pictures at 12 megapixel resolution pictures, the Memory Stick PRO Duo 32GB is great news for Cyber-shot owners as well as anyone with an HD Handycam.

SHINY PREVIEW: Sony Handycam CX520VE

Posted by on Thursday, 16 July, 2009

I’m going to break this to you straight away. The Sony Handycam CX520 starts at around £1000. That’s for the 32GB SSD model. If you want the 64GB version, you’d better be prepared to part with another £200 or so. When I saw this thing on paper, I couldn’t quite see what all the fuss was about but as soon as I got the thing in my hand it was obvious I was playing with a top quality HD camcorder. What impressed me most about this machine is that the 3-way image stabilisation actually works staggeringly well. You can shake the thing pretty vigorously and the picture barely wobbles. The quality of the optics also sound pretty spectacular and it’s got all the touches you’d want like GPS and touchscreen too. A little surprised that it only records interlaced images before upgrading them though. One wonders how much more you’d have to pay for professional video cameras, if any at all, but ignore that thought and you’ll be really pleased with this one. Looking forward to a full review.
