What I Did to Speed Up My Computer

Posted by on Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

I recently noticed my computer was slow to respond and producing errors. Now I’m going to tell you the simple things I did to speed up my computer with the help of a registry cleaner. Before I get into the specific tasks, I want to explain what the registry is. Within your computer system, the registry is a catalogue of sorts that the operating system accesses every time an action is performed.  For example, when I run Microsoft Windows, the computer searches through the registry for files to open and run the program. Because I constantly install/uninstall programs for my home business, extraneous files are left within the registry causing my computer to run slowly.  In fact, I started to receive various error messages that caused not only frustration, but it also was wreaking havoc on my work.

Before you even consider altering or cleaning any part of your computer, you need to backup your data. While there is minimal risk of losing data when you are just doing simple cleaning, there is no reason to put your important information at risk. If you don’t have a backup drive, you can always sign up with one of the many web-based companies which will store your information for only a few dollars a month.

A great starting point with cleaning up your computer is running a registry cleaner. You can find a wide range of quality in registry cleaners. There are free cleaners available for download, but they may be poorly programmed or lacking tools you want. Because of this, it is always best to go with a paid program from an established company. That way, even if you do have a problem, you will get the technical support to help you out. Registry cleaners are very straight forward and anyone can use them. You simply backup the registry, then run the cleaner.

After you run a cleaner, you’ll want to run a couple programs that are so important Microsoft included them with every copy of Windows. Scan disk and drive defrag are both found under system tools and can significantly improve the speed of your computer. They basically find errors on your drives that may be causing problems and then restructure your files so they load more quickly. The programs essentially run themselves, but since they may take a while, you should consider starting them at night before you go to bed.

In the past, I utilized different network drives in order to share files between other computers. But out of sheer laziness, I didn’t take the time to disconnect from these network connections. This time in order to improve speed, I accessed the “Disconnect Network Drive” under the “Tools” tab, under My Computer to disconnect the connections. This also helped with boosting PC speed.

I get annoyed with all of the programs that autostart. It is most annoying when I am accessing the hard disk for important files, and I have to wait for all of these programs to open. I finally went into the “system configuration tool”, and modified the programs that I didn’t need to autostart. Some of these programs like chat software and musicdownloads can attach themselves to your startup wthout you even knowing it so it’s definitely worth a try to find out.

Most of these methods are free and all of them are easy to do. It doesn’t take a professional to get your computer running back at top speed. It just requires you to roll up your sleeves and do some cleaning. Of course a little help from reliable tools like Registry Mechanic by PC Tools didn’t hurt too. I followed all of these steps when I chose to speed up my computer and the difference has completely eliminated my frustrations and aggravations from having a sluggish PC.

My computer is running very slow. What can I do to speed it up?
There are many factors that affect PC performance including both software and hardware. First, check out the minimum requirements found at  Please realize these are the minimum requirements and any hardware additions especially adding memory will help boost performance significantly. Eliminating unused programs from your computer and unnecessary icons off the desktop will also increase PC performance.Virtual PC was originally produced by Connectix.

Why isn’t Client/Server support bundled in the base engine jar?
Many applications run entirely on a single system in a single process, so do not require Client/Server capabilities. For instance, a servlet storing data entered into a Web form or an address book application running on a PC does not need to communicate with other processes. Client/Server code would increase the footprint of these applications and provide no benefit. For such applications, Derby provides all the advantages of a relational database without unnecessary networking code.In case of a poor performance of Anyplace Control while viewing of the remote screen, it is recommended (in order from most effective remedy to less effective): Try to disable “Hardware acceleration” on the remote PC.
