iGloLEDset brings the party to the Kindle Fire, helps you lighten the mood (video)

Posted by on Saturday, 17 December, 2011

Back when we first saw what iGloLEDset could do on an iPhone, few would’ve thought an Amazon tablet would exist today. But it does, and let’s face it: the Kindle Fire could benefit from a colorful personality lift. You can make it happen if you’re willing to take on the 9 price tag that’s slapped on a set of remotely controlled LEDs. Aside from its app introduction to the Fire, nothing changes, so you’ll get identical features to those using the bulbs on another Android or iOS device. Certainly a commodity, but no one could blame you for wanting to add a pinch of geek spice to the season’s festivities. Surprise! Video demo is after the break.

Nielsen’s Q3 numbers are out: Android’s still atop the OS chain, Apple remains number one manufacturer

Posted by on Tuesday, 29 November, 2011
Another quarter has come and gone, and you know what that means: Nielsen ratings are out again. The latest batch of numbers don’t reveal anything wildly new, but they’re still just as telling nonetheless: 44 percent of mobile subscribers in the US use a smartphone in the US. Of those, 71 percent are in possession of an Android device or an iPhone. Additionally, 56 percent of all phone purchases during the third quarter were smartphones. And — this probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone — at a decisive 42 percent, Android remains the number one smartphone OS while Apple is still perched firmly on top as the leading manufacturer (28 percent). Check out the source link below and graph above for more of the tiny details.

Siri gets lost internationally, promises to do better next year

The iPhone 4S’ Siri integration may be a potential game changer, but she’s not quite the world traveler some of us would like her to be. In fact, it seems she’s as lost outside of US borders as any unprepared tourist. Looking for a pub in London? Better find a traditional map. Need to know the time of day in Canada? Siri admits she has no idea, go buy a watch. Business search (via Yelp), directions, traffic data, and Wolfram Alpha search all appear to be US-only features for now. The automated assistant’s international failings aren’t too big of a surprise, however — Apple’s own Siri page outs the service as a beta, noting that some features may vary by area. Stuck with sub-par international support? Sit tight, it’s coming: Apple’s Siri FAQ states that additional language support (including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Italian and Spanish), maps and local search content are set to go international in 2012.

Xoom 4G LTE upgrades boomerang back with Honeycomb update, microSD card support now a go

Posted by on Friday, 7 October, 2011

Xoom owners that hastily shipped off their slates for an LTE upgrade are in for a surprise. Turns out the newly equipped 4G tablets are not only being expediently returned, but also come with an upgrade to version 3.2.2 of Honeycomb. Details of just what’s been included in the new firmware are scant, but the main takeaway from Verizon’s overhaul is the now functional microSD slot. That’s right, unless you were privy to that non-U.S. Android 3.1 update or installed the Tiamat kernel, you’ll now finally be granted read/write access to your microSD card. It seems wishes do come true in Big Red land, you just have to practice extreme patience.
