So surveillance cameras are actually good for something

Brickhouse Security in New York sells lots and lots of cameras. They even have one hidden in a teddy bear and they’ve got this crazy one inside a clock. Anyway, they were filming their office one evening when a frayed vacuum cord started to burn. Things would have been fine but management decided to move a file cabinet over the burn and then blame it on cigarette smoke. Boy were their faces red when they whipped out some footage from the scene, catching the nefarious manager in the act.

The company post itself looks like a dig at their cleaning/maintenance company, but it’s nice to know at least some justice has been served thanks to Panopticon-style surveillance.

Fake security camera moves, pretends to keep you safe

Posted by on Friday, 19 February, 2010

So you want your neighbors to think that your house is an impenetrable fortress, but you don’t really feel like shelling out the hundreds of dollars needed to buy actual security cameras? Maybe you’re seen those other fake surveillance cameras in stores, but you want something that moves, damnit. Well here you go: the Hammacher Schlemmer panning Faux Security camera set.

I suspect that generally speaking, if you shop from Hammacher Schlemmer, you’re not going to need to buy a fake security camera. Going fake however, can be quite expensive. The FauxCam has a blinking LED, and a built in motion sensor that moves to follow the person in the target area. So if you’d rather have all the insecurity and none of the protection, you can buy this product for $59.95. Personally, I’d say buy a real security camera for about the same price.

U.S. military now wants 3D surveillance cameras. Avatar invented 3D, you know.

In a sense, the following story can be summed up thus: the US military wants new, hi-tech equipment. That’s not exactly breaking news, no, but there’s an Avatar connection, so if the world could stop rotating on its axis for a moment… It’s called Fine Detail Optical Surveillance, and the military wants Darpa to develop it. Think 3D spy cameras. Attach one to a Predator-type device and the boots on the ground—fresh-faced kids from the corn fields of Iowa—will be able to see the bad guys long before they know what’s going on. Woo!

Now, that’s what the Pentagon wants. Whether or not Darpa, made famous by Metal Gear Solid, can actually deliver it is another matter entirely.

It sorta sounds like the system that scans ports and other at-risk locations, and churns out “Doom-like graphics.

There’s really not too much more to this. I will say this, though: the next time you see stories touting Avatar as the highest grossing movie ever, please keep in mind that these stories don’t take inflation into account. Also, the average ticket price for 3D Avatar is $18, quite a bit more than plain ol’ 2D movies. Not taking inflation into account is like baking an apple pie, then saying the apple part is optional. It’s like, what?
