Emacs Org-mode – a system for note-taking and project planning

Google Tech Talks July 15, 2008 ABSTRACT Org-mode is a large Emacs sub-systems that has been integrated into Emacs with the version 22.1 release. From it original intend, Org-mode is a system for structured note-taking and project planning. It uses strictly plain text files, making it a truly portable, system-independent solution. The project-planning features are implemented using a fairly simple outlining paradigm, upon which meta-data concepts like due dates, priorities, TODO states and tags are overlayed in a non-intrusive way. Besides outlining the system and its basic concepts, I will give background information into the history of Org-mode and discuss the properties of such an evolved system compared to a top-down designed one. Finally, I will also briefly touch on some technical aspects that may be interesting for Emacs wizards and developers. Speaker: Carsten Dominik

Sony’s Rollable OLED Display

I’m still a bit bummed about Canon’s recent announcement that they’re officially throwing in the towel on their SED display technology, but life goes on, and it looks like OLEDs are shaping up to be a suitable replacement, and then some. Today Sony announced they’ve developed a “super-flexible 80 μm-thick 4.1-in 121 ppi OTFT*1-driven full color OLED display” that can actually be wrapped around a cylinder with a radius of just 4mm, and even stretched, while still playing full-motion video! If you’re interested in the technical aspects of how the display was created, I’d recommend checking out Sony’s official press release, but the rest of us will probably be content to just ooh and aah at the video I’ve included below.

If you happen to be in Seattle on May 27 while attending the 2010 SID symposium you’ll apparently have a chance to see the display in person, but as for the rest of us, it’s easily going to be a few years before this technology even begins to trickle into consumer products. But, it’s clearly yet another nail in black and white e-ink’s coffin.

Indie game “Trauma” uses Photosynth (?) as control method

You may remember Photosynth, the impressive yet somehow unsatisfying photo collage tool from Microsoft. Though I always thrilled to the technical aspects, I’ve never taken a shine to it. Maybe it’s the photographer in me that prefers one well-composed photo to a hundred interlinked snapshots. One game developer, though, saw potential that I never even considered. Krystian Majewski has put together Trauma, what looks to be a very interesting point-and-click adventure game using Photosynth’s ability to essentially create “levels” out of pictures.

The abstract, psychological-exploration atmosphere reminds me somehow of the mesmerizing Mirror Stage, and the dreamy narration reminds me of Max Richter’s The Blue Notebooks. At any rate, it looks like a compelling little adventure.

Note, I say Photosynth but the game apparently runs in Flash, which suggests it’s some Photosynth-ish derivative. We’ll see. The game will be released when it’s released, apparently; bookmark accordingly.

Sony to Offer New Digital Copies Of Your Old UMD Games

So what will happen to all of your old UMD games if you buy a PSP Go? You’ll be able to procure digital copies of those discs, maybe even for free.

I asked Sony’s John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing for Sony, what the company planned to do for their most loyal fanbase—those who’d amassed a large collection of UMDs but who’d also like to play these games on the Go. His response:

We’re in the midst of putting together a good will program. We’ll be unveiling that soon [because] we actually think there’s a significant group that will be upgrading from the 1000…In the past, we’ve seen a 20-25% trade-up factor, and I assume that’s going to be the case here. We’ve modeled that. So we’re looking at a good-will program—a short term good-will program that would continue for years afterward.”

Short-term for years afterward? In other words, the program itself will last for years, but these digital game copies will be tied to either when you bought the UMD or the PSP Go—such specifics were not made clear.

Speaking more regarding the technical aspects of the good will program, Koller explained while the distribution model was still in the planning stages, the user’s experience would be similar to Portable Copy—a way in which Blu-ray movies can be ripped and converted from the PS3 to the PSP. However, Koller assured me that users would not be ripping their UMDs. Instead, it sounds like Sony will use a PSN-based digital distribution model will “encourage” users to sign up for the service.

But the neatest thing about Koller’s Portable Copy comparison? Portable Copy is free. So we’re doubting that Sony will charge for the service—though we have no confirmation. Unfortunately, Koller also slipped in that Sony’s “looking at what kind of games will be offered.” In other words, Sony’s good-will program will probably not apply to every title in the PSP’s library, but given that there are only a few that matter anyway, maybe this limitation isn’t such a big deal.
