It might not be making as much money as the competition in Cupertino, but that doesn’t mean Samsung isn’t raking in cash at an astonishing clip. We reported earnings estimates a few weeks ago, but now it’s official that the firm posted a 5.3 trillion won (.7 billion) operating profit in Q4 2011. That represents over a 2 trillion won (.8 billion) increase year over year. In all, it pulled in 47.3 trillion won ( billion) in sales, thanks in no small part to the over 300 million phones Sammy sold last year. While mobile accounted for roughly 40 percent of company sales and half of its operating profit (2.6 trillion won, or .3 billion), its semiconductor business did almost as well, raking in 2.3 trillion won ( billion) in profit over the same period. Samsung’s Display Panel business outperformed 2010 — buoyed by strong sales in LED televisions — as sales were up almost 20 percent, to 8.55 trillion won (.6 billion).

It appears that Big G has big plans for Google TV, and the Executive Chairman foresees the platform proliferating to the point that “most” new televisions will have it embedded by the summer of 2012 — that rumored switch from x86 to ARM must be going well. That strikes us as an awfully lofty goal given it’s light market penetration thus far, but with Samsung still on board the Google gravy train and others waiting in the wings, Schmidt just may be right. However, until we see just how many sets are packing Google TV at CES, our skepticism remains — check the interview itself and another video after the break that encapsulates just how we feel on the matter.

British expats and international fans of BBC television alike can now stream some Gavin & Stacey to their televisions (past season 1 anyway, which is on Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video), as long as they’re properly equipped. The global iPlayer app for iPad has been updated with AirPlay streaming (those in the UK however, have no such luck so far) so once users update to iOS 5 and buy an Apple TV box, they’re in business. Of course, this would all be much simpler if iPlayer were just available on the Apple TV itself (without XBMC or other hacks), but no one asked us, did they?

Appliances are considered an investment at home especially that they come with a price. These precious appliances of the homes are computers, kitchen electronics, and the most well-liked of the media set – television.

In buying your television, it is not enough that you merely pick based on its size or on how awesome its exterior is. There are more technical factors you should realize in order to acquire the best acquisition on TV. Let me present you those five things you ought to understand in advance about them.

Response or Reaction Time
The standard response or reaction time for liquid crystal display or LCD TV, as we know it, is about 8 milliseconds or equal to 60 hertz refresh rate. Response time determines how immediate a pixel on the screen changes its color, as from black to white. A quick reaction time produces clear image displays even on fast-moving films on your monitor.

The explanation why some TVs get fuzzy or crop judder or sudden jerk is because they have slower refresh rate. They fail to produce a superior coverage of a show like a sports tournament like the Grand Prix. What they somewhat show are “motion lags” being not capable to maintain with the swift of motion of event.

Previous televisions has 16 milliseconds reaction time as a standard. But with the expanding technology, present manufacturers are skilled to make LCD TVs with a quicker reaction rate of 8 milliseconds or 120 hertz. But of course, these new models cost a little above the normal ones.

Television Resolution and Picture Quality
Together with response time, you should also find out your televisions’ capacity to display quality pictures or resolution. The resolution will determine how the details of the images are being displayed compared with other images in the screen. This is the cause why most people turn now to High Definition TV or HDTV as it produces excellent images than the Standard Definition TV.

Television Flexibility
Other manufacturers on the other hand add more functions on TV like more video and audio input and output for more fun at viewing. You get to enjoy more at watching films in digital versatile discs or DVDs and Blu-ray discs which are high-end technologies for film storage. With these added features, you can fix your camcorders or game consoles on your TV so that you can view and play with more visual amusement and convenience.

Manufacturer Warranty
Aside from learning what it takes to be a good television, we should also understand what it takes to look after them as an asset.

Most TV manufacturers offer a TV warranty service for customers to provide a maximum user satisfaction. TV warranties cover damages resulting from the potential technical problems of TV itself but not on damages resulting from misuse of the owner or accidents. Warranty covers apply for 12 months for most LCD TVs and will be longer for newer TV models. So if your TV is one of the state-of-the-art models where only experts has the intelligence to handle it, it would be better if you ensure a warranty for your TV.

Personal Maintenance
Televisions will live longer if it’s being taken cared off well by its users. You can do simple maintenance by never allowing your TV to be placed under heat and moisture, or else, proper display will be ruined. Also, put your TVs away from filthy places or in locations where it is prone to being poured of liquid substances to avoid electronic malfunction inside the product. The insides of your LCD TV is composed of sensitive electronic parts. Exposing them to accidents may lead to the demise of your new acquired TV.

To get the best buy for your television requires a great deal of circumspection and a considerable amount of technical knowledge. Think well starting from the pre-purchase up until the post-buying issues like maintenance and repairs. Being one of the valuable things at home, owning it surely requires careful use.

We’ve seen plenty of building-sized televisions — like the 80,000-square-foot ceiling screen in Beijing, or that record-breaking monstrosity that the Cowboys installed in Dallas — but those single-dimension LCD’s have nothing on this “5D” cube opening on Friday. Constructed from 156 Sharp 60-inch HD displays, the 5D Miracle Tour can only be found at Huis Ten Bosch, a “residential-style resort built after a medieval 17th-century Dutch town” located in Sasebo City, Japan. The unique attraction accommodates 32 guests at a time, and consists of one main front screen, surrounded by additional panels on the top, bottom, left and right. Lasting eight minutes, the tour presents the story of a mermaid named Sirena, though content will occasionally change — given the transient nature of mermaids, of course. We’ve only been able to dream of the modern-day curiosities we’d encounter while visiting 17th-century Holland, but we certainly hope this magical place won’t elude us the next time we’re near Nagasaki.

Are extended car warranties a waste of your own time and money? Extended warranties on objects like televisions and home stereos (are they even called that anymore?) generally are, because nothing typically goes wrong with these. That’s really not how it is with a car full of moving components and burning heated fuel though. Have a look at it this way – would you get used cars that came with no warranty? If the idea makes you uncomfortable, there’s your answer to why a warranty on used cars is a great idea. Just as medical insurance protects you in the event something happens, there always is something possible with a car, particularly used cars. Folks buying on eBay Motors know that – buyers will always pay extra for a car that’s under warranty. The warranty makes people comfortable for a good reason – a car is really an insanely advanced mechanical machine and there are any variety of things that can go wrong with it every so often.

Some people do have a legitimate point when they say that extended car warranties are not useful. These are usually people who have bought their warranties without researching their options – from spam usually. Your extended warranty is just as good as the company that offers it.

If you’re buying from an agency that just might go under really quickly, you will have nothing to show for your money. Folks without a car that’s reliable don’t get an interview, and don’t get a job. Just give it some thought – in case the transmission drops out, it can quickly set you back a lot more than a couple thousand dollars. All accounted for, there are more reasons to get extended car warranties than there are not to.

But there are things you need to take into account. Your first point here is that your extended warranty has to come from a reputable company. If one company appears much more affordable than another, in the event you want to go with the cut-rate price, try to look at your options in financing the better more expensive warranty. Typically, you need to get 0% financing. If you bought an extended warranty from a car dealer, they’d usually add it to the purchase price of your vehicle and finance it with your 14% APR car loan.

In the event you feel that there is nothing you could do about your car now since your car’s very old, think again. Agencies like Warranty Direct have products for cars which are well over 100,000 miles. They cover big-ticket items like transmission and engine, and offer you 24×7 emergency roadside assistance. That should make you feel like you’re really driving a Mercedes, now shouldn’t it?

Crunchfish, a Swedish app company, has built software for mobile phones that turns the phone’s camera into a mouse. It allows the phone’s front-facing camera to track a person’s hand movements so he or she doesn’t have to touch the screen. As someone who surfs the web on her handset while eating Chex Mix, this might come in handy (and keep my phone cleaner). It’s also useful for folks wearing gloves.

The Crunchfish gesture control engine also allows for 3-D manipulation of content, although I’m not really able to picture how that works on a flat screen. The software is just a prototype at the moment, and it sounds like handset manufacturers will have to elect to integrate the gesture control with Crunchfish’s existing 3-D rendering engine for cell phones, in order to give developers a chance to take advantage of the motion-control (especially the 3-D part).

Crunchfish isn’t the only one trying to figure out a gesture-controlled UI, and its decision to go after phones seems a bit off. However, as phones get front-facing cameras and have more processing power, the ability to track movements and turn them into commands for the phone could be useful. Samsung has also filed a patent on the topic and a company called Eyesight is trying to bring gesture-controls to tablets.

Mobile tech isn’t the only place motion-control research is targeting; televisions are another popular device. GestureTek, Softkinetic and Canesta (which was purchased by Microsoft) are all working in the television space to enable lazy bums like myself to control our TVs from the couch even if we can’t find a remote.

It may have started with Nintendo’s Wii and graduated all the way up to Microsoft’s Kinect, but gesture controls are moving beyond consoles to help us control the myriad devices around us. Crunchfish may sink or swim, but it’s not alone in its ambitions.
