This Magical Time Lapse of Los Angeles Inside a Snow Globe Makes Me Miss Home [Video]

Posted by on Wednesday, 21 December, 2011
Hi folks. You might think Los Angeles is filled with Starbucks sippin’ celeb wannabes who are fake, plastic and vapid. Whatever. I think of Los Angeles as home. And since I’m not going home for the holidays, this time-lapse video is the closest I’ll get to a lovely Southern California “winter”. More »

DARPA's XC2V FLYPMode crowd-sourced combat vehicle revealed, now in desert khaki (video)

Okay, so perhaps the specific color here is up for debate, but one thing is clear: the XC2V FLYPMode is one imposing looking vehicle. Also known as the Experimental Crowd-derived Combat Support Vehicle, DARPA has billed this mean machine as the “first crowd-sourced, militarily relevant vehicle design.” After being selected as the winning entry to DARPA’s design-the-next-Humvee competition, Local Motors tricked out the XC2V FLYPMode in just 14 weeks. For now, it is but a “proof of principle project,” meaning we probably won’t see this thing riding dirty in the desert anytime soon, if ever. You can, however, see at least a portion of the beast’s birth in a time-lapse video after the break.

Not able to attend Macworld Expo ‘10? This 56 second video shows you aren’t missing much.

Posted by on Thursday, 11 February, 2010

Macworld Expo 2010 is currently going on and, well, we don’t have anyone on the show floor. It didn’t really make sense to send a crew to cover the conference now that Apple isn’t headlining the event. The whole thing is likely just an iPod/iPhone/iPad case orgy anyway. I kid, but so far I haven’t seen one interesting press release from the event. Anyway, TUAW is there and captured all the fun in this 56 second time lapse video using an iPhone 3GS and the iTimeLapse app.

Lightroom 3: Bring on the time-lapse videos

Adobe Systems released the first Lightroom 3.0 beta only last week, but already people are adapting the software for their own ends. In Sean McCormack‘s case, time-lapse video.

Time-lapse photography, for those unfamiliar with it, compresses a sequence of still images into a movie that appears to speed up the passage of time. It’s how nature documentaries get those clouds scudding over the mountains and the sun racing across the sky.

Most of us use just a small fraction of what our software can do, but McCormack is one of those people at the other end of the spectrum who figures out how to push software well beyond the built-in feature set. In Lightroom’s case he took advantage of its ability to export a sequence of shots as a video, a feature designed to let photographers create easily shared slideshows.

Time-lapse video of LA’s wildfires looks apocalyptic

There have been some other time-lapse videos of the LA fires, but this is the best I’ve seen. Not a gadget, but it’s thanks to a gadget-savvy population (you guys) that as something like this is happening, we get it in real time, writing, radio, news, and in an artistically-inclined format like this.

A Symphony of printers

inkjet symphony
Here’s a fun video made by Kingston University design graduates Tom Wrigglesworth and Matt Robinson. They used 8 HP inkjet printers to make a clever time-lapse video. No word on how much it cost in ink to produce this.
