A common mixer employed by DJs would likely typically include a minimum of two and up to six or more stereo channels to be used for mixing and hooking up the many audio systems that the DJ is making use of. This is actually the power of the drive and it’ll assist you to create exact changes to the various blends to obtain exactly the sound and style that you’re trying to achieve. A final aspect to consider whenever buying your turntable is the type of tone arm that it includes. Usually, straight arms are considered much better with regard to scratching, which means this may be something that you might want to take into account.

A standard mixer used by DJs would normally contain a minimum of two and up to 6 or more stereo channels to be played with with regard to mixing and connecting the many sound devices that the DJ is utilizing. All the various channels would include a phono input for platters as well as 1-2 line inputs for additional equipment like audio players. Each channel also has unique adjustments and they are quite easy to use.

You will probably also want to choose something that is relatively light-weight, as it is a lot more comfortable when you will have them on for long periods of time.

There are many other fundamental items to research and consider as well. You need to purchase a good quality microphone and as your company evolves, you may want to think about purchasing some type of unique DJ computer software.

After you’ve decided on your turntable, purchased your Alesis 12R or a different brand of mixer and good quality headphones, you’ll be on the right path to becoming the greatest DJ. The remainder will probably be up to demonstrating your own expertise, getting lots of great personal references and building the best DJ enterprise that you are able to.

Interesting note regarding DJ Hero, where “interesting” means “potentially bad news.” One of those fancy analyst types, someone at Cowen and Company, has slashed sales expectations by a little more than 50 percent. That’s nothing to brush aside if you’re Activision.

Here’s the juicy part of the report:

On DJ Hero, despite some recent positive comments from company management about pre-orders, we remain very cautious about the title’s prospects at launch,” he noted. “A survey of online retailers indicates a demand profile that is well below what we would have expected to see just a few days before launch for a title that was destined to be a big (or even modest) hit. As a result, we are reducing our estimate for DJ Hero Q4 US unit sales from 1.6 million to 600,000, and we are reducing our first year estimate from 2.5 million to 950,000

Someone at Kotaku wrote, “It seems the turntables have turned on Activision,” which legitimately made me laugh.

Look, for a time I was into that whole DJ scene, and still am to an extent. That’s why I wrote what I wrote: that the barrier to entry to becoming a competent DJ, what with today’s software, is a lot lower than it is to becoming a competent guitarist. Plus, DJing is a little more niche than guitaring; who didn’t want to play the guitar growing up?

Now, the analyst isn’t saying that DJ Hero won’t sell at all, just that, based on the early hype, and the Hero brand name, it he and his company initially expected it to do better.

Or, if you want to be a cynic, you can blame Activision for burning through all these music games in such a short period of time that people are either A) tired of them or B) they’ve played enough if them, and don’t need to play any more.

In any event, the game comes out tomorrow for $120 with turntable. (Maybe the price has something to do with it, too?)

When it comes to turntables, I prefer them in their natural, all-analog state.

That's just me. Mixing digits and grooves is a hot topic of late. My pal Chris Chiarella over at Home Entertainment magazine seemed to really like Denon's new DP-200USB turntable ($250). I reviewed another USB turntable last year and thought it was too much work to use.

I'm no expert in this area, but this Denon seems like a better way to go. First, you don't need a computer nearby to do the analog-to-digital thing. Chiarella just connected the turntable's analog cables to his receiver's phono input, after switching the turntable's internal Phono EQ to Off (so the Denon will work even if your receiver is phono-input challenged).

The DP-200USB's best feature is its front-panel USB port. The system's internal MP3 encoder converts analog signals to digital files. A blinking red light confirms that grooves are being digitized. Denon claims 30 LPs fit on a 1GB drive.

No problem, just plug your laptop into some RadioShack computer speakers and hit shuffle, right?!

For those of you who don’t want your party to be graced with a spontaneous rendition of “Yakety Sax”, Algoriddim Software has released djay 3. This DJ program integrates with your iTunes library, and automatically adds transitions and other cool DJ things to your mix.

The UI is straightforward for experienced DJs and anyone who has every used a record player. Simply select a song, drag it onto the platter, and hit the large, green play button. Basic functions such as a three-band EQ, crossfader, and stereo panning are all at the bottom of the turntables.

djay 3 does have some basic FX capabilities. The standard echo and reverb, as well as some preset transitions between songs, to give that real, disc scratching feel. You can either control the mix in real time, or select an iTunes playlist, hit “Automix” and let the program do it for you.

If you want to shell out $50 just for some cool transitions between and a GUI that looks like a turntable, go ahead. But if you’re serious about jockeying, get yourself a real turntable.

For over 10 years ElectronLuv has been producing custom amplifiers and high-end components.

I think they're awesome-looking things, and I love that they're built to order. In a way ElectronLuv's design ethos reminds me of the "American Chopper" TV series where they custom build high-end motorcycles to order. But in this case it's stereo pre- and power amplifiers, guitar amplifiers, turntables, and horn speakers designed to meet ElectronLuv's customers' desires.

Some might call it steampunk or retro chic, but I think ElectronLuv products are unique and represent the best of American high-end audio.

ElectronLuv's Josh Stippich needs three to six months to design and build each of his one-of-a-kind products. In the early design stages Stippich sends his customers drawings to get feedback so he can give them exactly what they want.
