HTC Sensation versus the rest of the dual-core world: smartphone spec sheet smackdown

Posted by on Friday, 15 April, 2011

We got to feeling a bit curious about how exactly HTC’s latest Android superphone, the Sensation 4G, stacks up against its fellow dual-core competition, so we did what every geek does in such situations, we compiled a chart. Included in this list are the finest and brightest Android handsets from each of the major manufacturers that have gone dual-core so far: the Galaxy S II, the Atrix 4G, the Optimus 2X / G2X, and HTC’s own EVO 3D. As it turns out, there are quite a few commonalities among these phones (besides the benchmark-crushing performance). They all boast screens of either 4 or 4.3 inches in size, the minimum amount of RAM among them is 512MB, the smallest battery is 1500mAh, and yes, they all have front-facing video cameras. Basically, it’s the future of smartphones, reduced to a stat sheet. As such, it must also come with the warning that specs aren’t everything, and user experience will most often depend on the software available on each device and on the preferences of the human holding it. With that proviso fully digested, join us after the break for the data.

Marvel Versus Fighting Pad features micro-switch thumb pad, art direction courtesy of a 12 year old boy

Posted by on Wednesday, 9 February, 2011
PDP, known in the gaming biz for everything from PlayStation Move accessories to heart-shaped guitar-ish (and garish) controllers, has really pulled out all the stops with its latest. The Marvel Versus Fighting Pad is a wired joypad that sports micro-switches for the thumb stick and six front-facing buttons, which is what you get on most arcade consoles (and what you don’t get on cheaper controllers, so theoretically this should be rather nice). Available February 14, this bad boy will set you back . Right now only an Xbox 360 model is planned, but if it sells well they will also be bringing it to the PS3. And yes, that is a panel from an actual Marvel comic slathered all over the thing. PR, Video after the break.

Gadgets: Old Versus New

Posted by on Tuesday, 25 May, 2010

Household gadgets are all the rage these days, from funky stocking fillers, such as odd shaped corkscrews and quirky tin openers, to more practical gadgets like water filters and multi tools. Whether you need your orange peeled or your feet massaged there seems to be a gadget ready and waiting to help you out. In days gone by household gadgets were somewhat of a costly treat for most people, things of luxury to be treasured and passed down through the generations. Nowadays the emphasis on many products is, first and foremost, fun.

The high demand for new and improved household gadgets has seen prices lowered and a huge array of new items filling up shop shelves across the country, but it could be said that making way for new and improved toys has left many of our old gadgets and gizmos obsolete. As the years have gone by the quality and durability of many of our favourite household products has been pushed aside to make way for cheaper and more accessible goods. Items such as toasters, phones and music systems have all gone though some major redesigns over the past few decades and not all of them have made these gadgets more durable.

Complex mechanics are one of the reasons for the low durability our modern household gadgets seem to have. More buttons, lights and fiddly bits unfortunately often means it’s more likely that something will go wrong with your appliance. Similarly, cheaper materials and bad workmanship all contribute to our short-lived sidekick’s downfall.

Some of us rely heavily on our household gadgets for all sorts of different reasons, so flimsy and easily damaged goods can be frustrating and downright annoying. There is some hope however as companies are constantly working to improve dodgy models and are utilising exciting new research and materials to make our household gadgets much more durable. New materials have helped make it possible to build sturdier gadgets. Silicon, PVC and vinyl are all used to great success in the gadgetry world and are helping households make use of their trusty gadgets for much longer than ever before.

Modern gadgets can be fun, great to look at and cheap, but they don’t always stand up to the test of time like their old counterparts. So, if you’re buying expensive gadgets, or have an item you simply can’t live without, you might want to consider getting them covered by contents insurance so hopefully you won’t be without your favourite gadget for long.

Making Your Own Custom 3D Models Versus Outsourcing To 3D Modeling Services

Posted by on Monday, 17 May, 2010

I often hear questions about whether one can take a training course and be able to make high quality custom 3d models easily? I get similar inquiries from students that are looking to save time and keep their 3d budget low. In reality, there is no quick way to learn these specialized skills. As with any skill, the more time you spend learning the skill, the more effective you will be in getting high quality results. Additionally, it is very difficult to start building a new 3d model or customizing one if you are a newbie in the 3d industry. You are far better of using 3d modeling services.

3D models are representations of real objects virtually and are generated and displayed via computer software. This means that the way you chose or require your 3d modeling services firm to display it, the interface and plugins as well as the angle are all very important because the width and depth changes depending on the point of view or camera angle that is represented.

3D models can be any real object with three dimensions that may be displayed on a personal computer by means of specialized software programs, with the width depth and changes of viewpoint represented. These models can be rendered through specific applications into two dimensional renders of frames. They are used in many areas, such as virtual simulations and 3d worlds, demos, architectural visualizations, walk-throughs, and so forth.

These final renders are then utilized in a number of industries, such as to create characters in virtual worlds and to demonstrate medical breakthroughs in the health care fields. They are also used to teach the inner working of the human body with 3d models of internal organs, to build virtual environments in a variety of simulations, create product demonstrations or animations for advertising, etc.

Generally talented individuals make and customize 3D models enjoy spending a lot of time on the computer, pay attention to details and have artistic inclinations. However, this might not be enough when on a time crunch or in a driven business environment where cutting costs is important.

For any 3d project, the budget available as well as time available can play a big part on the end results, whether it is a still render for print materials or a full scene for a 3d movie. This influences whether your in-house artists will cut down time and costs by using 3d modeling services or if they will produce everything on their own.

There are additional considerations to take into account if your in-house artists make your own 3d models. The most important is that high quality 3D models are seldom produced rapidly. The second consideration is that 3d modeling services will generally offer quicker delivery time for custom 3d models because they have experienced 3d modelers and rendering artists that focus on just customizing models.

The return on the investment of your valuable time and money is the base line when examining various 3d modeling services. It is often the cost versus the time lost during production. Of course, a project manager, medical professional or advertising firm may not have the skills or inclination to even try to make their own 3d models.

Utilizing 3D modeling services is common for advertising firms that make ads for their clients, health professionals that want to sell their prescriptions to doctors, video productions and architectural designers. They outsource their 3d projects because of the ability to cut down costs and get it done fast. Making 3d models is routinely just too slow and occasionally too pricey compared to the cost of just getting custom 3d models done by experienced 3d modeling artists.

Artists who like new program interfaces should select their 3d modeling application conscientiously keeping a few things in mind. There are also other alternatives, such as some freeware applications available for anyone to start with relative low costs. However, depending on the open source community and your previous knowledge in 3d, this option might not give you the same results as the more commercial professional software. The best way is to start learning the basics and then progress into more advanced levels to gain a better understanding of the process and its potential.

Ultimately, when custom 3d models are acquired from 3d modeling services they have higher quality, are far more detailed, take less time and are cheaper. When looking to get these results for your 3d project, be sure to discuss with them before you begin, the process, timeline, file formats, level of detail, and any changes that you need.

Flat Pyramid 3D Marketplace has excellent samples of realistic renders from high quality custom 3d models. They also have stock 3d models available for download and they offer 3d modeling and rendering services for various 3d modeling and rendering projects.

Windows 7 Was Too Late for This Guy

Posted by on Tuesday, 1 December, 2009

Apparently, some people won’t accept Windows 7 as Microsoft’s apology for Vista. Derived directly from “Apologize”, the “rock” one-hit wonder of (fittingly) One Republic made popular by Timbaland, I give you: “Too Late, Windows 7″:

Of course a Mac had to figure somewhere; it’s the new love of the disillusioned former user, who considers Windows 7’s arrival a little too late. Hit the video comments on YouTube for opinions following the classic Windows vs. Mac themes:

  • “Idiot. Macs are more expensive for the same hardware”
  • “Haha, PCs aren’t as reliable or secure as Macs”
  • “Oh yes I totally agree! OS 1 is definitely better than OS 2!” (or vice-versa)
  • “Shut up, you don’t know what you’re talking about”
  • “Screw them both, I use Linux!”

Thanks for the tip Andry!
