If your foremost dream is to jack into a dystopian cyberpunk reality where hackers play with human brains (and you also happen to love Japanese anime), you’d best book your flight to Tokyo right now — a Shibuya department store has set up a basic cyberspace simulator straight out of Ghost in the Shell. That’s the film Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society, to be precise, which just got a stereoscopic 3D re-release in Japan this week, and in its honor creative services company Kayac set about constructing a high-quality Kinect hack. Microsoft’s depth camera tracks the lean of your body, while the honeyed virtual reality is projected onto a pair of nearby walls, and it’s your objective to slap the Tachikoma tank silly without falling over yourself. Get a peek at what it’s like to play with in the video above.

Kinect dives into anime cyberspace, dares you to catch cute robot tanks (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 20:51:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

MANGA MAD gives insight into contemporary Japanese culture through the iconography of its biggest pop culture and explains why comics are not just for children, as depicted by the compulsive consumer obsessiveness of the otaku adult manga and anime scene. The tradition of graphic narrative is traced in Japanese art history through to the post WW2 boom of comics. There is extensive coverage of cyber-sex, ‘electronics town’, Akihabara. The virtual reality, manga-anime-mecca, for otaku, and most popular tourist attraction in Japan. In addition, Comiket Market, the biggest comic and cosplay event in the world is featured with an interview with its founder, Mr Yonezawa, who recently passed away. Candid interviews with artists, animators, publishers, historians, retailers and otaku fans punctuate vivid fantasy graphics and cartoon-clad, bustling, metropolis vistas, segued with an exotic, electro sound track. MANGA MAD opens the window behind the Japanese mask, to reveal what’s really going on in the collective imagination, and explains why manga is so ubiquitous, mesmerising, virtually uncensored, and is now contagiously popular world wide.

If you’ve been reading OhGizmo for the last 5 years, you might recognize VirtuSphere from this 2005 post. Since then, not too much is different, besides that VirtuSphere seems to be trying to open up to a new market that’s not the US Army or NASA: gamers.

VirtuSphere is at GDC hoping that someone will step up and port some worthwhile games to their system. Like, you know, Halo 3. Meantime, what they have in the works is a gameshow that (as far as I can tell) involves two people in two VirtuSpheres trying to virtually kill each other or something. If you want to try one of these out, you’ll be able to find it in the Excalibur in Las Vegas in about a month, or if you just can’t wait, expect to pony up about $55,000 for one of your own.

Hosting for your curious pictures.
It goes without saying that the World Wide Web has become the real living and working space for many people of the world. Currently almost all the human beings widely use this virtual cyberspace for different purposes. This greatest has changed this world completely. If someone from the 19th century had an opportunity to have a look at this he wouldn’t believe his eyes. The World Wide Web keeps on maintaining its development every day. So it’s quite possible to discover new opportunities every time you surf there.

The World Wide Web has created a completely new kind of reality. I mean this virtual reality first of all. People have got an excellent opportunity to make friends much easier than ever before. Now it’s possible to introduce one’s personality to the whole world. And the whole world can be quite easily introduced to you. Off course all of this has got its own negative features. To my great regret the World Wide Web has a certain negative impact on humans. I mean that the Internet is able to provide humans with some negative information such as violent or porno movies and other similar things. Unfortunately it’s very harmful for children because their mind is still vulnerable for some unfavorable interference.

But anyway I’m convinced that the World Wide Web has got more positive effects than negative ones. The main thing is that the Internet makes our human communication much easier. As for me I’m used to spending more time online than in the real world. And I should add that there’s no my guilty for this. First I have to stay online for a long period of time because my personal income is closely connected with this world network. So as it follows from this I can’t give it up now. Secondly, in spite of much work to do I always can have an opportunity to spend some time on communication with my friends.

I can’t imagine my communication with friends without sending or receiving photos and other kinds of images. For this purpose I use different photo hosting websites. To say honestly every day I’m used to pumping tons of photos into different photo hosting websites. And I can’t stop doing this. The main thing is that I’ve got a lot of photos worth to have a look at. And my friends also have a lot of curious photos to share with.

It’s not difficult to use photo hosting. I think that this kind of hosting is the easiest to use among other ones. In most cases you only need to press upload and submit buttons in order to host your photos there. If you have something curious on your hard drive you can also present it to the whole world now.

Today many brands hide behind what seems to be a lovely notion as best web hosting. Though this positive notion helps to make more sales, the term of best web hosting is very vague.

What is standing behind it?

Surely one can talk about uptime, reliability, support, peculiar techy features – and all that things will be up to the point. But best web hosting is far beyond, and in without much words and fuss this is about the place where you have no problems when hosting your web site or blog.

Today we live in the world where info makes life easier.

The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute — the same Fraunhofer that holds many of the patents on MP3 — have a booth at CEATEC exhibiting some of their research efforts, shopping them around for potential licensees. Their Virtual Mirror display is, I think, a great example of augmented reality done right. It uses a camera, a display, and their special software to dynamically alter the image projected back to the viewer.

The concept of a mirror realizes augmentation without the customer needing to wear glasses. No additional equipment has to be used as you can just step into the application and move freely like in front of a real mirror. This significantly enhances acceptability and immsersiveness while also reducing the effort needed for supervising such an application.

Here’s a quick video:

Note how the shadows of the shirt are preserved. This is the kind of detail that really makes augmented reality believable. Without that nuance, our brains (or at least my brain) kind of gives up trying to make the whole thing work. I was particularly impressed by how well the deformations were preserved as the guy stretched and pulled his shirt.

And I stand corrected: the lady watching and not-watching TV at CEATEC does not have the best job of the event. This guy does!

You can learn more at virtualmirror.de.

The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute -- the same Fraunhofer that holds many of the patents on MP3 -- have a booth at CEATEC exhibiting some of their research efforts, shopping them around for potential licensees. Their Virtual Mirror display is, I think, a great example of augmented reality done right. It uses a camera, a display, and their special software to dynamically alter the image projected back to the viewer. Video inside!
