Posted by on Monday, 25 April, 2011

I’ve constantly been fond of employing a Uniden walkie talkie, as it’s one of the greatest ways of communication especially inside the wild. Whenever I go for a hike with my partner, I be sure we have a fantastic approach of communication so we can avoid any unnecessary danger. I’ve been employing the Uniden GMR2872-2CK Waterproof Two-Way Radio for really a whilst now and I wanted to share this review to ensure that people on the market who are searching for a fantastic walkie talkie would discover this model and make use of its rewards, just like how I and my partner did.

Style

The 1 factor that makes this model greater than other people is the truth that it is waterproof, so you won’t need to worry about getting an electric shock whilst hiking on a rainy day. It’s submersible in 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. It’s especially useful whenever you walk via wet areas and shallow waters, as how I and my partner do out in the wild. In appearance, I believe this model is really distinctive and appealing, too. The yellow body is very diverse from other typical black scanners. It is also designed to be compact, lightweight, and flexible sufficient for optimal use in the course of trips, travels, and a variety of outdoor activities.

The LCD display is huge, backlit, and has quite clear digits which make reading the details on the screen extremely effortless to do. You are able to simply trace the frequency that you are looking for via the screen display. The pair comes in a package with all of the essential accessories including two belt clips and a charging cradle which has a dock for each unit. The rechargeable batteries are very useful because you don’t need to replace them every single now and then. Also, you do not have to open the unit to replace the batteries. It is possible to just position them on the cradle, just like a rechargeable cordless telephone.

Scanning and Audio Output

This Uniden walkie talkie has 22 channels – 15 GMRS and 7 FRS frequencies which have sufficient channels to maintain you updates with the police calls, fire and emergency calls, marine, aircraft, and other service channels, and ham radio stations. The 7 FRS are dedicated for personal frequencies, giving you many choices for you and your partner to use. It is possible to usually select whichever frequency you want as long as it’s an FRS channel.

As a personal radio, this model has a lot of exceptional features. It is possible to generate your own group for all of your companions where you are all set to one frequency and only you’ll be able to hear your conversations. In this mode, you can not receive transmissions out of your group, which means that the mode is exclusive for your group use. You can set a group code from numbers 0-142 and each of your group members should have the identical code. Each and every of you also get to set a nickname which appears on the screen of the receiver whenever you make a call. This is superb for personal communications specifically in case you do not want any person else to hear about what you’re discussing.

You are able to also set 10 different call tone alerts which indicate when a person is attempting to contact you. If you’re sleeping or you don’t want to be disturbed by the noise of transmissions, you are able to also set the unit to silent mode. The roger beep is an simple indicator which tells you for those who have successfully received and sent the message to your partner or group mates. It is possible to also make direct calls to certain individuals which you want to speak to privately. One of the finest characteristics of this device will be the automatic channel change which sets you and all of your group members to a various frequency if the frequency you might be on is interrupted or full of other users. You’ll be able to do this automatically having a basic touch of a button.

The channel scan feature lets you scan through all 22 channels to hear the activities happening in each channel. The two-second delay lets you listen to the channel when it’s active, and soon after two seconds of inactivity, that’s when the scanner will jump to the next channel. This maintain you updated even with late responses.

The power increase button supplies maximum range for your device so you are able to transmit messages even at excellent distances. The maximum range of the unit’s transmission is 28 miles, dependent on the environment and surrounding blockages.

Other Features

The LCD display indicates the level of battery life, much like a mobile phone. It also indicates when power is running low so it is possible to be prepared to charge it. The keypad lock feature prevents the accidental modifications in settings and frequencies. The battery life of the unit can last up to 12 hours. It also has a power saver mode to conserve energy consumption.

Conclusion

I don’t know about you, but I think those specs were fairly impressive. This Uniden walkie talkie genuinely has exceptional characteristics which will be really valuable outdoors. The Uniden GMR2872-2CK Waterproof Two-Way Radio is often a great catch and would make an excellent Christmas gift.

Real LEGO blocks are not used in these walkie talkies

lego-walkie-talkies

These LEGO walkie talkies could be so much cooler. It’s not that they are lacking in a technical way. Nope, they pack all the standard bells and whistles of a modern walkie talkie. It’s that the LEGO-look is printed on and not actual LEGO bumps. Lame. I know. Good thing they are only $28 from Urban Outfitters.

CrunchGear’s Gadget Club Contest with Peek and Radio Shack

Remember the Radio Shack Battery Club? Back in the old days you’d go into Radio Shack with a card and they’d give you free battery once a month. It was heaven. I used to go in and grab a 9-volt – the best battery to have, by a long shot.

Well, Radio Shack and Peek just teamed up with us to offer you the Peek/Radio Shack Free Gadget Club. For the next three weeks we’re giving away one Peek device – your choice – and another gadget (anything you want up to $500 in value) from Radio Shack. Sure as heck beats a D-cell, right?

Here are the rules:

* WHAT (is up for grabs): A Peek Pronto with 6 months free service (unlimited email & texting) + any gadget of your choice from Radio Shack (max. value of $500) per week for three weeks. Contest runs from July 15 to August 5.

* WHY (reason for the competition): To celebrate the launch of Peek in Radio Shack. Peek Classic now just $19.95 and Peek Pronto only $59.95 available at select RadioShack stores

* HOW: To enter you must create a physical gadget of your own invention that you would want Radio Shack to sell. Always wanted a blender with an iPod attached? Make one. Always wanted a golf club with a GPS device? Make a model of one. You can make it out anything: paper, cardboard, foam, paperclips, pipe-cleaners, a broken walkie-talkie. But it has to be a physical object. No drawings, illustrations, or Photoshoppery. I realize this more than we’ve asked of you in the past but how hard is it to stick some stickers on a raisin box and take a picture of yourself holding it up? Be creative. Remember – your gadget will be voted on by millions (OK, thousands (OK, my parents and your friends))). Here’s a handy guide:

Special thanks to Peek and Radio Shack for this amazing opportunity.

Motorola i776w

Motorola i776wThe Motorola i776w is now available. The Motorola i776w is a new iDEN clamshell available at Boost Mobile & just recently, Southern LINC. You won’t find any high-end features on this handset, but it still has everything you’ll need for “normal”, every-day use. The 65k color main display is actually fairly decent, and the exterior display is also color (although it’s minuscule). The keypad is pretty typical for Motorola – smooth and metallic. The one thing I’m not liking (appearance-wise) is the bulky antenna. But, I know most people won’t have a problem with that.
The Motorola i776w’s most notable features include: Bluetooth, 2.5mm headset jack, walkie-talkie feature, IM / texting capabilities, a .3 megapixel VGA camera, calendar, speakerphone & GPS. The handset comes in a purple/silver color combination, and also features a stylish design on the front. It’s actually a good looking phone, but more geared towards the ladies for sure.
