God of War III comes out today (YES!), and with all the hoopla surrounding it, I thought this would actually be a good time to recommend/pay tribute to the other God of War games. I’ll explain.

I’ve always considered myself to be a hardcore gamer — up on the big new releases, aware of what’s going on in the industry — but for some reason, I completely missed out on God of War and God of War II. I have no idea why. I hadn’t really slacked off in my gaming at all. (Maybe I was still collecting all those dumb shards in The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. That took forever.) Yet I didn’t buy them when they were first released, and I didn’t really know anything about them.

Anyway, sometime in 2007, the Wii was my current system of choice, and I was making my way through Paper Mario. It was alright: It controlled well, it looked nice, and it was cute. But I’d continually be asking myself, “Am I having fun?” I really was becoming jaded and disinterested in games at that point, I’d realized.

One day I found myself at a Best Buy, and saw God of War for PS2, now a Greatest Hits title, priced at $19.99. I still really had no idea what it was about or what type of game it was. I just knew the name. What the hell, I thought. Let’s do this.

All hyperbole aside, I was truly blown away. I’d never seen anything like God of War — the music, the graphics, the scale, and the sheer fun of it all. The brilliance of Kratos’ weaponry, combos, and pace gaining new powers. I thought about Paper Mario — and not to throw Nintendo under the bus, because I truly love that company and its games — but this was way ahead of anything the competition was doing, especially something like Paper Mario. And I wasn’t impressed by just the game; the bonus making-of documentary was fascinating and, most importantly, brutally honest. Kudos to Sony for including it. Overall, the experience completely reinvigorated my love of gaming and led me to rethink the possibilities of the medium. I bought God of War II the day after finishing God of War. It was also quite excellent, if slightly weaker and sloppy in the story department, but was still a great entertainment.

So yes, I’m excited for God of War III. But if you, like I once was, are unaware of the God of War franchise or what all the hubbub is about, trust me. Pick up the God of War Collection (an HD remastered package of the first two games) for PS3. It’s a great way to get up to speed, and you will be amazed; if you care about games or gaming history — or just want to experince Greek mythology on steroids — it’s essential.

The game, to be set in Afghanistan, is said to be inspired by “real events,” i.e., the sales of Modern Warfare.

It’s a pretty big deal, inasmuch as a video game story can ever be a big deal. The very first Medal of Honor, confusingly also called Medal of Honor, released for the PlayStation in 1998, essentially invented the WWII shooter sub-genre. Call of Duty, I think we can say, was Activision’s attempt to cash in on the success of Medal of Honor. How the tables have turned!

So let’s take a moment to reminisce about playing Operation Market Garden over and over again for the past 11 years.

The question now becomes, how long till we’re tired of the modern setting? I think we’ve all shot our fair share of Nazis in various video games over the years, but how long till we’re bored shooting nondescript “ultra-nationalists,” “separatists,” or any other word but, gasp, “terrorist?”

And does it ever weigh on your conscience as you’re playing these modern games, “Hey, there are guys my age in Afghanistan for real doing this”? It’s one thing to land on the beaches of Normandy over and over again, or recreate some Napoleonic era naval battle, but dodging IEDs from the comfort of your big comfy couch while that same thing is happening for real right at that very moment…

I don’t know, modern war games are just unsettling to me.

But the people have spoken: modern warfare is here to stay. Given EA and Activision’s track records, I fully expect to be see Modern Warfare 7: Waiting Around for Orders All Day Long by 2012.

Making a game exclusively for a single console is a tricky proposition: it's hard to justify the multimillion-dollar budget required for a truly A-list product while limiting your potential audience to owners of only one of the three major living room consoles. Nevertheless, Microsoft has its well-regarded Halo and Gears of War games, Nintendo has a stable of famous franchises, and Sony has Uncharted (while still holding back on God of War and Gran Turismo for PlayStation 3).

Sony's Saturday matinee-style adventure was an early hit for the PS3, and its sequel has built tremendous buzz over the past year, based on carefully constructed sneak peeks and trailers. We've spent this past weekend playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (out October 13) in order to determine if it lives up to the hype.

The game is tremendous fun and the interactive equivalent of a big, over-the-top summer movie. It's an unashamed mix of influences from Indiana Jones to Tomb Raider, with anti-hero Nathan Drake playing a mix of treasure hunter and art thief. Drake is rakish and good-natured, so you don't really mind that he's essentially a hardened criminal.

This time around, Drake's pursuing ancient treasures plundered by Marco Polo, which should eventually lead to the mythical city of Shambala. Don't expect much more depth than that from the "Da Vinci Code"-like premise; the story and characters run the gamut from cliched to nonsensical, and no one ever seems to have a particularly well-thought-out reason for anything he does. At least the banter between characters and the voice acting is on par with a decent made-for-cable action movie, which may sound like faint praise, but is still a pretty high bar for most video games.

(Credit: SCEA)

It's to Uncharted 2's credit that the game is such an excellent overall entertainment product despite the lackadaisical storytelling. While it may not break any new ground (unlike, say, Scribblenauts), it's still the purest distillation of globe-trotting action/adventure we've seen in a long time. The incredibly high level of polish on everything from the scenery to the animation to the soundtrack draws the player in, creating a seamless experience that flows easily from set piece to set piece. Put simply: if you're looking for a reason to show off that PlayStation 3 console and massive HDTV, this is it. We'd be hard-pressed to think of a game that simply looks better.

Online Games are not only designed for Men. These online games are unisex – can be played by both men and women. Gender is no longer an issue when it comes to online games unlike any other ordinary games. It is an issue on tactics, method, deployment and strategy. There are many good and cool games in the internet. Just try searching and you may be surprised because you can find a listing of the best games online – from adventure games, war or army games to rpg gaming. Some games are even made to movies because of its popularity. The most successful movies that were originally games were Resident Evil, Max Payne, Street Fighter and many others. Before, these online games are just played by men. But now, there are many online girl gamers around. Some girl gamers even surpassed the abilities of men gamers when it comes to strategizing. People have this mentality that online games are just for men and that women are not supposed to play these kinds of games. I don’t think so. Some girl gamers or most girl gamers even go as far as joining competitions like war games, adventure games, spy games and even army games. Gender is no longer an issue with online games. It’s not a game of strength. It’s a matter of finding the perfect strategy or the perfect plan. Contrary to what others believe, online games are not a waste of time or money, in fact, online games can enhance and perk up our attentiveness and our alertness, and they also sharpen our mind through creating strategies and making game plans depending on the kind of online game we are playing. But generally, online games have objectives and goals. And it’s up to you on how you will attain and achieve these objectives. UFC 2009 Undisputed, UFC 2009 Undisputed – Whatever it is that you are looking for, you can definitely get it online.
