Star Wars has always been popular in Japan, so seeing Luke Skywalker et al. in a Japanese TV commercial from the 1970s isn’t a big deal in itself. But seeing the Star Wars franchise being used for promoting “sea chicken” (canned tuna) is kind of unusual.

Needless to say, the gaijin acting in the TV spot, which was first aired on Japanese TV in 1978, are just look-alikes. And apparently, “sea chicken” maker Hagoromo Foods has used the Star Wars setting without getting a license from Lucasarts. Different times back then, I guess.

There you go, right on the living room wall. A big, fat Death Star. I’d personally cut off all the fluff at the bottom there. It’s the Death Star. Not the Death Star, sponsored by Star Wars and a couple Fathead logos. It’s not some stadium with naming rights and all that.

The dimensions of the “high-grade vinyl” decal are a whopping 4′2″W x 4′2″H. And if your living room looks like that – nice furniture, etc. – and you actually stick this thing up on the wall in there then you, my friend, are someone I’d park myself next to at a dinner party. And if you’re married, well, hold on to that spouse of yours as if you’re waterskiing barefoot.

Star Wars sneakers from Adidas are coming. Fair enough. This new commercial features what looks like a scene from Indiana Jones at the very beginning, then we’ve got a random shot of Snoop Dogg, Darth Vader, and then Daft Punk looking at Darth Vader as if to say, “That guy stole our shiny helmet look.” You guys look more like bounty hunters, Daft Punk. Just saying.

You like stickball? Cool, that’s in there. Howsabout urban foot races? Covered. Break dancing? Yes. Swing sets? That too. R2D2 sweatshirt? Check. Hip hop remixes of Star Wars music? Affirmative. Shots of the actual shoes? Maybe for a split second or two. Not really, though.
