Review: VC Audio Pro recording / audio editing app

Posted by on Wednesday, 21 April, 2010

Most recording apps are fairly limited in what you can do with your recording once you’ve made it. VC Audio Pro from VeriCorder is the first multitrack audio editor for the iPlatform and is primarily aimed at journalists making field interviews and whatnot. While the editing and sharing capabilities are pretty powerful, VC Audio Pro is limited by its inability to add and edit audio not recorded with the app.

Its a three track editor that allows you to move and split apart audio files, add volume automation, and add fades where needed. The interface takes a little figuring out, but everything is accomplished with either a single or double tap of your fingers.

I was unable to find a way to import other audio clips into the app. So if you wanted to add a theme song to your story you’re out of luck. Finished clips can be uploaded directly by secure FTP over Wifi.

The recording quality of the iPhone mic is nothing to write home about, so if you want better quality recordings, you can use one of many external microphone for the iPhone. VeriCorder carries its own line.

$5.99 in the iTunes app store.

South Korea imposes midnight gaming ban to prevent addiction

Posted by on Monday, 12 April, 2010

The South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism doesn’t want the country’s youth becoming addicted to video games, particularly MMOs, so it’s imposing a ban of sorts. Starting in the second half of this year, underage gamers will find their Internet connections disabled for six hours every night, either from midnight to 6am, 1am to 7am, or 2am to 8am. The idea is to ween kids off these games, by hook or by crook, before they become addicted. Gotta start somewhere, I suppose.

The measure extends beyond a simple connection ban. If you’re caught playing a game online for more than six hours at a time, then you’ll find that your connection will be throttled.

(I didn’t know they had Comcast in South Korea, amirite?)

It does seem that the connection ban will only be applicable to specific games, including MapleStory and Mabinogi, totaling 19 games in all. Presumably kids will still be able to browse Wikipedia to research supercontinents and whatnot.

One game not included in the new ban: Lineage. Isn’t that the most popular game over there? I’m sure I’ve heard that before. Pretty toothless ban if that’s the case.

RadioShack looking for a buyer, possibly Best Buy

Posted by on Friday, 26 March, 2010

We could be looking at the end of RadioShack, boys and girls. The company is said to be exploring a strategic partnership, or outright sale, possibly to Best Buy. I don’t see why Best Buy would be interested: what does RadioShack sell that’s either A) not already available or B) entirely too niche for its Wal-Mart approach to selling consumer electronics?

JPMorgan Chase is supposedly in charge of figuring out how to handle the merger or sale or whatever it ends up being.

The only reason why Best Buy might be interested is because of RadioShack’s success in the cellphone business. I guess RadioShack does a fairly OK job of selling phones and accessories and whatnot, and its small stores could play into Best Buy’s “we need more, smaller stores in malls, people!” modus operandi.

Or, and this is a twist, perhaps rather than selling to Best Buy (or someone else), perhaps RadioShack could use some of the money it has on hand—$900 million—to gobble up some other store! Now that would be unexpected.

I’m trying to think the last time I bought something from RadioShack… it might have been solder for when I hacked my Xbox1 in 2003. So yeah, it’s been a little while. The store always seemed sorta dingy to me, like the lighting was messed up.

The F-35 Lightning II could land in your front yard

Posted by on Friday, 26 February, 2010

The video above shows off the fancy-pants landing system in the new F-35 Lightning II. Notice the massive hatch just behind the cockpit that helps slow the aircraft down for shorter runways. Of course if that doesn’t work, there’s always the vertical-landing mode on some models where it really could land in your front yard assuming you don’t mind your grass getting burned to hell from the hot gases and whatnot.

Review: Jabra GO 6430 Bluetooth headset

Posted by on Friday, 26 February, 2010

The Jabra GO 6430 headset has the best audio clarity I’ve ever heard from a Bluetooth headset. It’s unmatched. It’s too bad that my ear and the headset don’t get along.

Features

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Works comes with quick-connect PC dongle
  • Works with Skype and Office Communicator
  • 6 hours of talk time
  • Charging dock
  • MSRP of $190

Pros

  • Amazing clarity
  • Charges via microUSB
  • Simple sync to a PC with included dongle

Cons

  • Very uncomfortable to wear
  • Very large

Review

The Jabra GO 6430 is absolutely the best sounding headset on the face of this earth. Never before have I heard such detail and clarity from a wireless headset. You would swear that you were talking to God via a fiber optic link.

With that being said, I can’t wear this headset for more than a few minutes. It hurts my ear canal, which is weird because I’ve never had any issues with ear buds or headsets before. But this one bothers me to the point that I stopped using it. That’s a shame because I really enjoyed the sound quality.

The headset ships with a dongle that makes it very easy to link to a computer. Simply plug in the USB dongle, hit the button and you’re connected. There’s no fussing around with Bluetooth settings and whatnot. Even Skype instantly picked up the device and allowed me to use it. I love that.

The headset does have a small limitation in that it does not support streaming media. This is rather strange as even most budget headsets these days will allow users to listen to local media. But for some reason this $190 model does not. Maybe it’s because Jabra felt that the business types that this headset is meant for wouldn’t want to listen to their Tom Jones albums on the go.

The bottom line is that I can still totally recommend this headset because of the sound quality despite the fact that it physically hurt me. Everyone’s ears are different so it might fit others just fine. Just make sure it’s purchased from a retailer with a fair return policy in case it gives you an earache, too.

Note to Jabra: Your website for so-called businesses is way over-complicated. It shouldn’t take me five minutes to find this model on the site or a worthless mini-site.
