Posted by on Monday, 28 February, 2011
It’s been a good year or so since the TI-Nspire line of graphing calculators got a refresh, but that was nothing compared to what the company’s planning for this year. Possibly responding to changing times (or the Casio Prizm), the new Nspire devices are getting a WiFi dongle for communication with TI-Navigator workstations, a 16-bit (320 x 240) full color display, and a number of new functions, including the ability to load images and analyze images for such things as curve fitting functions and regressions. Perhaps even more exciting, the new Nspire OS 3.0 features 3D functions — and, yes, the original grayscale TI-Nspire models will be able to upgrade to the new OS when it becomes available this spring. TPM is reporting a mid-April release date, for an MSRP of 5. Totally psyched? We bet you are! See the PR after the break for more info.

The Ultimate Comfort Of the Mental And Body-Ergonomics

Posted by on Tuesday, 8 February, 2011

Ergonomics attempts to align the workspace to minimize the physical and mental stress on the worker’science’ of how to match man (or woman) with machine (or their work environment). There are many applications of ergonomics from designing the interior of a luxury automobile to designing a kitchen appliance for one of the most common uses is the design of workstations.

There are many factors to take into account when looking at the ergonomics of one’s work environment. An ergonomic chair always fits in here somewhere. The fact that many of us spend a large portion of her days sitting, makes it very important that the chair give proper support and can be adjusted to our needs. Spending your life savings to buy a top-of-the-line ergonomic computer chair is not a requirement as long as you give a good ergonomic chair that can be adjusted to meet your body needs.

The Miller chair in the above video is an example of a top of the line ergonomic office chair ,and while it is nice it may not fit most people’s budget. Since the chair is a central feature of any workstation you should always buy the best that you can afford. Your desk and the way it relates to your chair and the positioning of your other tools would probably be the next thing to look at. Everything in the workplace often times revolves around the center which is the computer. From this we get the term computer ergonomics, which has become common today. Proper adjustment of your monitor’s position so that there is no undue strain on neck when working with it is important. If you position the keyboard so that your fingers are just about the and hanging comfortably, you will find this minimizes stress and the wrist and hands. The tools that you have at hand to do your job should be arranged in an orderly fashion so that they are easily within reach, so that you don’t have to stretch or strain in order to reach them. This serves two purposes. Minimizing the effects of strain due to having to stretch to reach improperly placed tool is the first benefit. And the second is the reduction of mental stress caused by not knowing where these tools are. Ignoring some of the key points of computer ergonomics can lead to a lifetime of minor physical problems and possibly the major ones. It is easy to ignore our posture and a workplace design without realizing it. We may not realize until much later the effects that this can have on us physically. Ergonomics usually escapes being identified as the cause of exhaustion at the end of the workday. You won’t feel stiff and uncomfortable at the end of the day if your workspace is ergonomically designed properly. Wouldn’t it be logical to put some attention on this?

HP and Dragon Training

Posted by on Monday, 29 March, 2010

How to Train Your Dragon, from DreamWorks Pictures opened on Friday and promptly blew fire over most of the competition. Numerous outlets reported the film was Number 1 at the box office this past weekend, despite somewhat slower ticket sales than expected.

In case those HP commercials featuring New Zealand comedian Rhys Darby (perhaps most well-known in this country for his role on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords) have somehow managed to escape your attention, HP partnered with DreamWorks to enable those pesky flying reptiles to soar off the screen and into your tub of popcorn.

HP points out that the film used an arsenal of their equipment, including ProLiant servers, DreamColor displays, Z800 Workstations, and other items.

That horsepower was sorely needed to meet the demands of the 3D film. As a comparison, 2001’s Shrek required more than 6 terabytes of data and nearly 5 million render hours. How to Train Your Dragon needed more than 100 terabytes of data and more than 50 million render hours.

The six-core Core i7-980X is hitting nearly all sectors of the computer world now. First gaming machines and now workstations. The Digital Storm DAVINCI is the latter in case you couldn’t tell by the product name.

Just like in the BlackOPS Core i7-980X announced yesterday, the Davinci also gets the overclocking option, which brings the speed up to a whooping 4.44GHz from the stock 3.33GHz. If that doesn’t make Photoshop zip along, the Nvidia Quadro GPU options should. All this graphic power starts out $2,952 for a base Davinci system with the Core i7-980X rigs going for a minimum of $4,995.
