Despite its rather curious name, the LG Optimus EX (aka the LG SU-880) just might be your soulmate — provided you live in South Korea. The 9.5mm device appears ready to take SK Telecom by storm with a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU (with no indication of make or model), Android 2.3, 4-inch WVGA TFT-LCD display and five megapixel camera; it’s also said to be coming in black and white varieties. We admit, it’s not the type of spec sheet that induces a large amount of salivation, but we imagine many will be seduced by the new device — if the price is right, that is. No word on pricing or availability yet, but we’ll hopefully know more once we get officially introduced to the new handset.

Yesterday I lamented Apple's decision to establish its own video standard, which, while little more than a suggested resolution and bitrate, does not fit will with any devices anywhere. The steady progression of VGA or WVGA, 720p, and 1080p are perfectly fine for the moment. That's why every camera in the world shoots to one of them. 1080p is too much for most people to work with, but 720p isn't that bad (though render times can be long), and VGA is really not that bad at all (Doug swears by it). So why the hell put a new one in there between WVGA and 720p? I don't like the idea of Apple bullying companies like Sanyo, who make perfectly good camcorders already, to add an option which needlessly complicates things.

But let's just get these camcorders out of the way, because they're worth taking a look at.

But let’s just get these camcorders out of the way, because they’re worth taking a look at. The two cameras are almost the same spec-wise except the horizontally-oriented FH1 has a 3-inch LCD as opposed to the pistol grip HD2000’s 2.7-inch. They appear to be quite versatile camcorders, able to take 12 stills a second or shoot up to 600FPS video at reduced resolution, something which was until recently the exclusive ability of Casio Exilims. They’ll shoot 1080p video at 60FPS, which is pretty amazing, though I don’t recommend you do it. Interestingly, they won’t shoot 720p or 640×480 at 60FPS — a bit odd. SD cards are the medium you record to, and both cameras have a 10x optical zoom. Quite a neat little package for $500! Or $600 if you want the pistol grip.

But to return to the rant. These cameras will also shoot, and in fact will default to, the 960×540 iFrame format. Come on. It can do so much and you’re defaulting it to this random format?

The T-Mobile Touch Pro2 is a brand new touchscreen device and successor to the very popular original Touch Pro handset. In fact, a lot of the features stay the same as the original model, however the display screen is upgraded to WVGA. Not only that, but the display jumps up to a superb 3.6″ in size. The corners are also more rounded, giving it a sleeker, more stylish look.

Features on the T-Mobile Touch Pro2 include: GSM quad-band – capable of global roaming, 3G, a 3.6″ WVGA touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera with video, Windows media player & FM radio, microSD slot, Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro, 528MHz processor, Opera web browser, Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, full QWERTY keyboard & mini USB port. As you can see, the T-Mobile Touch Pro2 is going to be one of the carriers’ top handsets of 2009. It’s got a superb feature line-up, a very stylish appearance & hopefully a competitive price.

This time the leak concerns Samsung's possible N97 botherer, the Louvre B7610. Samsung just can't seem to keep their developments secret - anyone would think that they were leaking them on purpose... On first glance the Louvre has a similar demeanour as the N97 or the G1, with the flip down keyboard - although I actually think the Louvre's keyboard looks better. It's got a slight ZX Spectrum look to it, with the red bits on the keys, and I'm all for that. The reported specs are as follows: Quadband (850/900/1800/1900 Mhz), GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA (3G+) to 7.2 Mbps GPS receiver (A-GPS) AMOLED Touch Screen size 3.5 inches with 800 x 480 pixels (WVGA) and 16 million colours 5-megapixel digital camera FM radio 1 GB built in memory - expendable to 32GB using MicroSD. Bluetooth 2.0 Wi-Fi 802.11b/g MiniUSB 2.0 Accelerometer 500 mAh Lithium-Ion 1 battery Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional - Possibly upgradable to 6.5 Dimensions: 11.2 x 5.8 x 1.6 cm The phone should retail in Europe from between €250 and €500. Until we've got the phone in our hands, however, it's difficult to really judge whether or not this phone is really a threat to the N97. What is clear is that if it wants to compete, it has got its work cut out.
There’s a very interesting article over at TeamXbox.com detailing some information about a supposed portable gaming device that Microsoft’s been working on. This device will apparently fall somewhere in between the Xbox 360 and the Zune.

The following information supposedly comes from anonymous sources within Microsoft:

The device will be a “digital entertainment handheld” and is referred to by “xYz” — the Y denoting that it falls somewhere in between the Xbox and the Zune product lines.

It will play games as well as movies and music. The anonymous sources say it’s unlike anything on the market today, but to think of it as a cross between the Sony Mylo, the PSP, and the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch reference is important because it underscores that the device will NOT have a cellular connection. The author of the piece, however, thinks it may have WiMAX.

The device will apparently have “a large WVGA touchscreen” and “hardware features not found on any handheld on the market” — again, this could be WiMAX, plus there’s further speculation that it could contain NVIDIA’s new Tegra chipset and perhaps even play first-generation Xbox games.

Sources say that this will be “a Live Anywhere device” with “a single online marketplace” that will blur the lines between the Zine, Xbox Live, and Sky marketplaces. For instance, if you buy a song or movie on your Xbox 360, you’ll be able to play it on this device — presumably it’d sync wirelessly. It’d also likely play Xbox Live Arcade games.

The interface will be very similar to the New Xbox Experience interface.

The device will compete with offering from Apple, Sony, Nintendo, and Google. So expect stuff like Live Maps, news, and traffic. Perhaps it’ll have a GPS chip (my own speculation).

Keep in mind that all this information supposedly comes from anonymous sources within Microsoft. Everything seems pretty credible and E3 is coming up in a couple weeks, which would be a perfect venue to announce such a device. However, as always, take this type of news with a grain of salt until more information is released.
